When I grew up, Maradona was the talk of the town and Pelé retired 10 years before that. Then came Ronaldo R9 about three years after Diego hung up his boots, but only shone for a couple of years before his knees gave up. Then Ronaldinho, who didn't last long because of his off-field antics. Then Messi came along, smashing everything for almost 15 years and redefining football limits. CR7 for all his stats, just can't hold a candle to Messi in terms of talent and will never be in the same league as Maradona, Pelé and Messi. Anyone arguing otherwise and pointing at stats or trophies has very little understanding of the game and its history. I'd say players like Pelé, Maradona and Messi appear once in a in generation (ca. 25-30 years). Other great players might pop up in between or alongside these football gods, just like CR7, but those three are so far above the rest in terms of talent, magic and understanding of the game that any comparison with other footballers, no matter the era, is just futile. It is very unlikely for me to see another football monster like these three but you have time on your side.

@@el_chaun In terms of raw talent, he's well below those three and a couple of others like Garrincha, Cruyff, Ronaldinho and the original Ronaldo. His dribbling, game vision, passing range and footballing IQ, whilst very good are absolutely not up to these. He's also not what we call a playmaker, the one who dictates the game and make the team dance to his tune. He's never been as decisive for his national team as the others were. He is the very sharp tip of the spear while the others were more the hand that throws it. That's not to say that he isn't an all time great in his own right, because he undeniably is. He's just not in the same league as the other three and no amount of "stats", gaslighting and moneyball approach will ever change that.

Messi is a complete player be it goal scoring (which he has more than ronaldo's average goals per match), passing, playmaking and ofcourse the dribbling. However, none of these mean to say that ronaldo is not a great player. He's great too like many other greats of this phenomenal sport and people should respect the hardwork and determination that each of those players put in this game, and I seriously donot see why do people start hating on a player like ronaldo, he has attitude issue but that's perfectly fine, everyone is built different. Messi is humble but that doesn't mean everyone is supposed to be the same, so spreading hate is something senseless tbh. But if you compare the two, I genuinely feel there is no comparison. It's Ronaldo's drive and his determination that make him special. If Ronaldo wanted to be a brain surgeon, a racing driver, or whatever, then his own commitment to do that would have made him the best in that field; it was just that he wanted to be a footballer, and he became one of the best footballers ever. But Messi was born to be a footballer. Not saying that he never worked at honing his talents but it comes more naturally to him. At the end of the day any club in the world would be lucky to have Prime Messi or Ronaldo, but for me, Messi is certainly the best of this generation.

Messi's skill at dribbling is incredibly complex. You describe is as simple or he does the same thing but I have to disagree. If you slow down to 0.25 speed, you will notice that he is feinting every possible decision available to him. As an example, if he has a simple pass to his left, a through ball to an overlapping full back, a pass to the striker making a run and there's a gap to dribble into, he keeps shifting his body to one of the options. As soon as the defence commit to stop one of them, he does another. For almost everyone else playing football, this is nearly impossible to do without falling over or committing to an option early enough for defenders to get a read. This is why the vast majority of actions that footballers take on the pitch are very simple passes or a dribble 5-10m before passing. For normal people, we commit to the act of dribbling, passing or shooting. It seems like he never commits to any and the defenders struggle to read his movements. Defender moves to block the shot? He slips it through for the left back. Block the pass and he shoots. Follow the strikers run and he runs through the middle of the defence. It's artistry.
