Lol, ignore the haters, I know you guys are trying! Lionel Messi is the greatest football player in the history of the game. He is unparalleled in technique and ability. He has incredible foot-speed (both sprinting and change of direction), combined with perfect ball control skills. He maintains close control of the ball, moving at high speed, with the inside and outside of either foot. It’s as if the ball is glued to his toes! The amazing thing is he can do all of this in the tightest of spaces, surrounded by other players. Add to that he’s a relatively short man (5’7”) with a low centre of gravity and he gets hit and bumped but still stays on his feet. All of these ingredients together mean that Messi with the ball is mesmerising - and defenders can’t stop him. It’s not a question of “they should know his moves by now.” He’s too quick! If he goes left, by the time you’ve gone left with him, he’s already gone back right. Remember Messi isn’t playing against kids, or chumps, he’s going against professional football players, the best defenders in the world - and they simply cannot stop him. I appreciate how alien it must seem, for Americans who aren’t raised on this sport, but for someone like me, an Englishman, in my 30's, having grown up with this Beautiful Game - it’s astonishing. Leo Messi is Picasso and Da Vinci, Mozart and Beethoven, Michael Jordan and Muhammad Ali. He’s the greatest individual artist this sport has ever witnessed and we might never see anything like it again in our lifetime. Peace.

What's interesting is how N Americans interpret an athlete's greatness. In Europe we say that they are gifted with something the rest don't have. You focus on work ethic, "Playing since he was a kid" or "Work so hard to reach there". Both are true, but you cannot reach Messi's level of play just through hard work. He is naturally gifted to play soccer on a level that only a handful of players in history could ever reach. I can think of 4 (Garrincha, George Best, Maradona, Messi). Yes he has worked hard, but its his unnatural skill level that sets him apart. Another thing is his mental quickness. Messi can read better and quicker than anyone body language. That is not trained. Honestly if you slow down to 0.25 the video you can get inside Messi's head and understand his choice of actions, otherwise you just remain in awe with his greatness.

With regards to his teammates just standing there, there is a few factors. Sometimes they are holding position to draw defenders toward them to allow Messi to go further. Sometimes the teammates are nowhere near because it was a fast counter-attack and everyone was defending. Once they interviewed a teammate that said that he was mesmerized watching Messi dribble 5 people and he forgot to keep running and he was just staring haha so I guess that happens to some of them sometimes.

I heard you guys talking about how his team mates left him alone.. There is a reason for them not running right beside him. By not running right beside him they are forcing the opponents to spread out to cover places where he could pass the ball inbetween the opponents, making it extremely easy for Messi's team mate to just run straight at the goal and score. You also talked about why no one has caught on to the way he dribbles, but even if he does use the same trick a lot, it's still only a 50% chance that you cover the right side, which is why you see him succeed so much with it. The defenders either have to go full out on a tackle to one side and you risk him getting past you dribbling to the opposite side, or you wait and that's when he's either going to out-accelerate you or make try to look for a pass to one of his team mates running into one of the spaces left open by multipible defenders running at Messi. What I'm trying to say is, that you guys might not know a whole lot about football, but there's sooooooo much strategy in this game that gets talked about in the locker room. As professionals you have a team manager who looks at the opposing team's selection of players, where the opponents greatest strengths and weaknesses are and he sets up the team accordingly. For example, let's say that the opposing team has a slow defender, you make sure that you have a fast guy up front that understands that all he needs to do is make the run when the ball gets passed to him because he will outpace the defender, creating a chance to score goals. Maybe the opposing team has a quick defender that you can't outpace, but he isn't very tall, so you put in a tall guy in front that doesn't want to race for the goal, but is really good at heading the ball and you make sure that your wingers are aware that he's the targetman inside the enemy box (Goalfield) and get to create chances that way instead. You could also look at what formation the opposing team usually uses and try to counter their formation by having players stood between the enemy player chains, making it easier for your team to pass to said player who now has a great view of the where everyone is and sees a way to get to a chance.

Very well said!!! There is also so much analysis before the game. I'm studying sport management and somebody that worked as a performance analyst for Swansea came to the university to talk about that. They analyze every single player of the opposing team, the way they move off and on the ball, style of play, etc. It's like a proper science. These 2 don't seem to understand that football has specific positions, like every other sport in the world, and probably think that there are just 10 players that run around the field.
