I understand what every one is saying about him going fast through the desert, but let's be honest. They have to stop quite a lot to setup cameras and what not, to film them driving past, then stop get the cameras etc etc or pick up the person recording. So in saying that, they drive a bit faster to make up for lost time due to the fact they are loosing time in order to get shots of them driving so we can enjoy it. So everyone just relax and enjoy the footage he has worked hard to bring us.

Interesting comment. My feeling is people like Ronny have encouraged the masses of people to go 4x4 and thus everything is getting totally F'd up. I don't even see the Simpson as any challenging adventure anymore....

Towing doesn’t kill the track if psi is correct and the vehicle can pull the trailer I.e not too big/heavy, it’s caused by 2WD, hard Tyres, worn shocks and mostly heavy traffic

In fairness to Ronny, that trailer wouldn't really cause much damage & he clearly has the experience & respect for the tracks to not make a complete mess of it if he did get stuck. Unfortunately not everyone towing trailers across the Simpson is so well prepared or even cares about what damage they may be doing as all they want to do is get their trailer across however possible. On my last crossing, probably about 2 weeks after Ronny according to the guys in Mt. Dare, the only people I saw getting stuck on dunes near the top were those towing vans as none of the dunes are actually too difficult for a solo vehicle. On 2 separate occasions I saw trailers getting bogged, maxtrax being dug in for recovery, then being dug back out afterwards without filling the holes in. Some of the holes looked like they'd dug defensive positions & I actually stopped to fill them back in so others wouldn't get stuck. They had a shovel in their hand & walked off from a hole they'd dug FFS!! 😡😡

Hey Ronny, by your own admission you hit the desert with Waynes shocks totally stuffed. lol My issue is the traffic... That place has become a hwy and there are just way too many people in the outback now. And lets not talk about tourist operators like Beattie driving unimogs across there all the time!

I do think they drive too fast for the conditions in a few of their vids. A bit P Plater like. I just think if you’re in the middle of nowhere it’s always better to take it easy and put vehicle preservation high up on the list. You actually see more on your drive too without getting tunnel vision from over concentrating on the track in front of you because of the high speed they’re doing.

Dude, the QAA has some of the biggest camping areas in the whole of the Simpson! Of all the places you've been this one was probably where you should've chilled & found a camp around 3.30-4pm like everyone else as you would've seen countless suitable spots from the top of dunes. Still, cracking video as always & had to laugh at the beer/eggs/apple incidents as we've all been there 😀

Having just crossed the Madigan, unfortunately it is severely chopped up as well, especially the western sides of the dunes. And a tip for eggs, put rubber bands around the lid and they won't get damaged.

I had to put fly mesh over my screen! (That's a compliment on the videography Ronny). Also I really appreciate all your videos - picking up tips from your mishaps is gold. Years ago when I was studying to be a gingerbeer, we learnt that complexity reduces reliability. Makes me wonder if its worth slowing down and sticking with the simpler shocks? At least, that bracket appears to be badly designed - a light bit of bracket metal supporting the canister so that it can vibrate will cause metal fatigue. It really should be supported at either end to stop the thing vibrating - might pay to cable tie the other one to stop it moving.

Seriously, they have everything on board including a kitchen! Weight of each vehicle a probable 3 tonnes (likely over), too much weight up top (rock and roll everywhere) and one of them is towing a TRAILER!! What for? Silly stuff. You will need recovery kit, spares, bedding, water, food, camp kit. Get the iron off those things (bog lover Landcruisers). People crossed that desert in the good 'ole days in 2WD Holdens and their skills, what changed?

If not in the fridge nicely packed at the bottom, carry them in the middle of your car as low as possible. In the 2nd row footwell if you have one, make sure they can't bounce too much & you'll be able to enjoy a cold one every night with no breakages. I carried 2 slabs this way in my Patrol to get through a 4 day crossing hahaha 😀

There is a product Ian that protects cans and bottles from rubbing together and bursting or breaking for remote travel and especially corrugations. They are called Tinnie Tubes or Stubby Tubes (you can even get ones for wine bottles) and they are made by MSA here in Australia. I use them all the time for my beer cans. Never had one burst yet

The French Line was so named because the track was created by French petroleum companies seeking oil. Most of the tracks were installed by Petroleum Companies who put clay on the tops of sand dunes so non-fourwheel drive trucks could negotiate the dunes & not get bogged as easily. I believe the pockmarks on dunes were created by vehicles with too high air pressure being driven through the desert. We did the Simpson a few years ago. One vehicle - a Patrol ute, driver using a tent, had very little difficulty, a Pajero with a T Van trailer, had lots of difficulty despite experimenting with tyre pressures. That couple returned a year later with a chip in the Pajero & outside School Holidays without any difficulty. Our vehicle was an HDJ79R with a piggyback camper. We had to negotiate the dunes in high range, usually 2h, because we had so much torque in low range that we bogged down. When we started up the dunes, the ute swayed violently from side to side to the extent that we had to almost stop ( still in 2h) until the swaying stopped before proceeding. I believe that if you can avoid the desert during School Holidays you should have a better crossing. We travelled west to east & there were 47 vehicles camped at Dalhousie Springs when we arrived.
@fowletm1992
@fowletm1992 6 жыл бұрын
Doing it in 2h is a huge issue Use 4h As soon as your off the road That rocking you experianced is called axle tramp Dipping holes in the dunes Use4x4 and saves the tracks

You said you used 2H " the ute swayed violently from side to side to the extent that we had to almost stop ( still in 2h) until the swaying stopped before proceeding." That's a problem ALL these Toyota utes have. It's an engineered design feature courtesy of the 100mm narrower rear end and overall narrowness of the vehicle. Add the high load level and overall height to the equation, and you have - tada - a swaymobile. And to think people pay Toyota a fortune for this piece of crap and then go on and spend another $20k+ on accessories to make it livable. And no Auto gearbox available. The ultimate FU from Toyota on top of the whole ripoff this vehicle is.
@keithhaycraft3765
@keithhaycraft3765 6 жыл бұрын
@@gerhardpetersen you are correct about me writing 2h I meant 4h, sorry. However, an HDJ79 has the 6 cylinder engine so, no difference in axle width. The Cruiser still ate the dunes in 4h, often in 2nd h, sometimes 3 rd high, though it struggled occasionally in 3 rd high.

I'd personally say no, for most people the Simpson is around a 5000km trip so if you can't work out if your shockers are likely to bork out in that kind of distance, change them before you go if they're a few years old as you'll be buying them anyway to have as spares. You'll be heavy enough before trying to carry too many spares you should have changed pre-trial 👍

Slow down, it’s the speed that’s killing the vehicles (and wildlife) not the desert!

Ronny! How often do you leave your truck idling when stopped? At what point do you decide to shut the motor off?

If longer than 5-10 mins engine off. To be honest it’s more of a bad habit than anything
