As a huge fan of the concept of cosmic horror, I'm absolutely taken aback. The technical aspect of this movie, by itself, is enough to make it exceptional - the visual and sound design are absolutely outstanding in quality, and, beyond that quality, are so very unique and perfectly tailored to the very specific tone and aesthetic of the movie's universe and theme. But on top of that, the movie itself is so... well, at the risk of repeating myself and for lack of a better word, unique. Cosmic horror is a very tricky genre to convey, especially through video, because two of its pillars are, to me, the unknown and the incomprehensible - and how does one portray those without negating their nature? For this reason, the pieces of cosmic horror that I love the most tend to be the most abstract or vague. But your movie, while arguably abstract and vague, still shows a *lot* by what I think to be the standards of cosmic horror - I would personally consider even "just" showing the "Bearer of Light and Dark" in such detail to be a lot, and is usually more than enough to ruin that unique feel that cosmic horror is meant to convey. Except, here... It doesn't. I can't quite explain why yet, as all of this is still very fresh in my mind, but it feels like, while we do see and learn about several entities and places with very detailed visuals and even narration, every piece that is made somewhat tangible 1. is still intangible enough to remain "unknown", and 2. is shown in a way that leads us to conceptualize, or consider, or think about other pieces. I guess another way to express that last point would be that while we do get some pieces to the puzzle, every piece that we get lets us see more and more empty space where other pieces are missing. I'm sorry if I'm not making much sense - like I said, it's all still very fresh in my mind, so quite hard to put into words. But your movie gave me such a unique feeling that I wanted to express my appreciation, and why it felt unique. I'm looking forward to see more of your work!

Oh Wow! First of all a big thank you for this detailed review! And I think that you are somebody who is "in the know" and has already had some experiences and impressions in the field of Cosmic Horror, probably far more than I have. And to come to the point, I can confirm that this is exactly my essential structure in film production - the unknown. Of course, this can also be seen as an excuse for not knowing what I am doing, but I am always aware of this and try to ignore external influences and genres. Besides, these films are like a second, unknown world for me, in which I also immerse myself during the process of making them. I have no direct script except for the lore of Thomas Winkler, which represents an own cosmic universe (I hope tthat we can show more content and information soon). And it is really nice to reach so many great people like you, who share the fascination for cosmic horror and appreciate it. It is also very interesting to see who finds it "scary" and who does not. So once again a big thank you for taking the time, I really appreciate it. The next film is already in full production and I hope I can convince you just as much, if not maybe even more ;) Thank you!

can I be negative before being positive? Okay, thanks. I didn't care that much for the throat singer effect nor for the SoundIron arpeggiated sound coming in around 1:50. The rhythm made it suddenly sound like some drama/cop movie. I would have not used any rhythmic stuff like that at all. A repeating rhythm gives people a sense of safety. Here comes that same beat again. Okay, it's known, thus safe. UNKNOWN is the whole premise here so.... beats, rhythms, tunes, songs.... I would at the most do some non-time music so there's no real tempo. Ethereal, unusual scales and bending of pitches, and of course unusual timbres. I thought the sfx were really good. The graphics/modeling/animation was really cool and had some nice stuff in there like the propulsion fx which actually looked like it could have been physically possible instead of just a glowing orb at the back of the craft. You put some serious heat into it. Looked as if it was a lot of power in that first one that's a bit white and going downward. That wall that moved... looks like you used some displacement animation. The dark mass at the end was really cool. Just solid enough to make me wonder what it was and if it was some entity. Overall, I thought everyone did a great job. The words though distracted me a little from watching the actual movie. I found myself reading along instead. But very nice effort!!! I assume you chose the Evee renderer just for the sake of render speed? I would just use Cycles and hit render and fuggetaboutit. what's an extra few days, eh? and isn't your project WORTH IT? heheheh APPLY ALL TRANSFORMS, for crying out loud! godz.... how people get results like yours with all the gotchas that can go wrong is really amazing. Oh, my UV unwrap sucked. Oh, I need 2 million polys for this model and another 2 million for the environment. and 4k textures... uh... let's see...... 64GB RAM... CHECK! two RX 4090s.... CHECK! anyway.... nice job!!!

hey @TruthSurge, first of all - thank you so much for your intense and elaborate interpretation of Nyghil! It's always great to see that guys like you take so much effort and create really cool interpretations here that I might not even have thought of at first. Especially since I'm always absolutely open to criticism as long as it's honest! But I have to say quite clearly that I will probably never be able to do everything perfectly and my projects should also be seen as experiments for the most part. Especially since I do 95 % of my work alone and many scenes are the result of pure experimentation and chance, I probably like to lose the thread of the story or the overview. So thank you again for your analysis, it will all be incorporated into the next movies and is an absolute great help for me. As for the technical aspect, I can say that I like to push EVEE to the limits, even if the result is unfortunately not as satisfying as real light and shadow rendering, for example. But I know my tricks by now, especially the volumetrics in Evee are bombastic and technically almost impossible to render with cycles. Fun fact, I rendered this movie with totally old, crappy hardware (I7 8700K 16GB RAM and an old GTX1080), so Cycles wasn't an alternative anyway. But hey, a new GOOD Workstation has been up under my table now and is running fine for a month now. And a new movie is already in the works! I can't wait to hear what you have to say about it, and of course I'd love to hear another great analysis and Interpretation from you! So many thanks again and also keep up your great Art and philosophy!

@@deliriumarts I understand. I don't think I gave any interpretation of the actual events or plot of the movie. Just some various thoughts I had about certain aspects of it. I thought it turned out really well and I liked it. I like sci fi and horror and I'm familiar with Beksinski's art and Giger's. I have only dabbled around in Blender and just kind of learned some basics but I quit using it and haven't touched it in months. I think I got depressed because it's so much work trying to model something from scratch and then animate it? You have to RIG IT somehow and all that timeline shape key bull bull is just not intuitive. Keyframes don't work as I think they should. All very frustrating. BUT obviously there are people who can get good results somehow. Maybe if I had started when I was younger I'd be better able to do some things. Keep up the good work and good luck with everything.

Too many times in movies about aliens the writer, director brings too many human-like elements to tell the story, but the honest truth is we have absolutely no idea what another alien species is going to think like or move like or act like, so I feel you did a very good job of making it feel truly alien without losing the story in the process. I think the visual aspects are very good, I especially love that strange door and the creature out in space. Just not completely sold on what is being conveyed. I think there's a line between the terrifying unknown, and just abstract vagueness. To me, a lot of cosmic horror's power comes from leading the viewer to try to understand that which cannot be understood or to confront that which is too far removed from comfort, but I didn't feel I had enough to work with to begin asking those questions.

This seems technically very well made (although KZbin's compression certainly doesn't do it any favors), but... I mean it's wonderfully modelled, animated and rendered, but it's meaningless. Some stuff happens for no discernible reason. There is no threat, and no indication that any kind of threat is forthcoming. There are designs that lean towards what most people would probably call demonic, but since the entities depicted are completely alone, the fact that they look weird doesn't really mean anything. Also, whatever it is that is supposed to be happening seems to have a purely technological basis, much more reminiscent of The Matrix than anything Lovecraft ever wrote. In short, this "cosmic horror" is more of a "sci-fi weirdness". Don't get me wrong, the audiovisuals are amazing, but it seems to hit far off the mark for something labelled cosmic horror.

@@deliriumarts Please do keep on keeping on ;-) Your technical and artistic skills are obviously top notch, I just think you could work on your storytelling a little. You say this is a part of some existing universe, and my guess is that is the root of the problem, really. The film makes sense to you, because you have a lot of background information that most of us do not. This is a trap it is very easy to fall into as a writer. When we work on a story, we create so much detail in our minds that never makes it onto the paper/screen. You should always ask yourself "why does this scene make sense", and if the answer is something you haven't actually told/shown the audience, consider either changing the scene, or adding more exposition earlier on so it _will_ make sense to the audience.

Hey @tiarymer1376. Many thanks for your fascination in this movie and it's main Lore. This is only one part of several films that were interpreted from the ZEPHID lore written by Thomas Winkler. Unfortunately, I can't give you too many details about it yet, because it's still under construction and is being constantly updated. But there will definetly come more!

Let me start with complimenting you on the amazing visuals, such effort has gone into this, you've done a fantastic job, and secondly, i dont know if its me being dumb or what but im left scratching my head as what exactly i just watched, and what the hell happened 😂 ....... ..... but ... this being cosmic horror, it makes it the perfect recipe, ... im sitting there saying "what the hell is this egg thing, where in the hell are they, whats goin on" im totally intrigued by the mystery and am desperate to see more and have some of the unknown be told to us .... but not all of it of course 🤫😉 but yes, cant wait to see you maybe expand on this and tell us more 👍🏻
@deliriumarts Жыл бұрын
dear @thecosmiclovecraftian first of all, thank you for your kind comment and your fascination for this film! And don't worry, the film is also not easy to understand in its entirety. This is only a part of the Zephid Cosmos and the Zephid Lore, which is not yet so well known and still under construction. And as you say, cosmic horror is also about atmosphere and eeriness, which is not always realisable in its entirety. Thank you for your open opinion and for watching. More to come soon!

Have to commend you for creating this; showing (but not telling) of something ‘other’. Also, take this as a massive compliment (please!).. JJ Abrams could’ve used you to give the Knights of Ren a backbone. Gave off a Sith vibe perfectly! I did an interactive animation for my degree some years back and wow, I just wish I’d had you around and known you. Amazing work, chilling, creepy and memorable. Thanks and please, maybe some tutorials on your process and/or background vids?!? New subscriber here!

An insane amount of effort went into this, and yet an A.I could’ve achieved the same thing with a few prompts and a click, you gotta add actual plot and storyline otherwise this isn’t anything other than a “neat ai prompt” of which we now have hundreds
@deliriumarts Жыл бұрын
jeah absolute. The topic of AI is (unfortunately) becoming more and more relevant, even in the areas in which we express our creativity. However, I try to avoid the artificial intelligence factor in my work . Of course, it can be an enormous help in many areas, even if you only use it as a "creative tool", and of course I don't want to get in the way here. However, platforms like Midjourney/Firefly/DALL-E etc. are rather a thorn in my side. I see these platforms as exploitation portals of artists whose hard-created art is stolen, put through a meat grinder and in the end served as a half-finished sausage stuffing in a far too thick art intestine. Even though some AI fans claim that this technology is supposed to help artists, at its core it replaces the artist without compensation or consent. Sorry, I had to get that off my chest ;)
@kitkat261 Жыл бұрын
An AI cannot produce something like this. Show me the "hundreds" of AI films that have this quality, and the same plot that went over your head.
@TenFalconsMusic23 күн бұрын
*CGI shorts are made exclusively to impress other CGI creators.* *Their plots usually consist of: "Stuff is going on, which leads to other stuff going on....The End"* *The creators typically spend countless hours on the graphics, but only a few minutes (if that) on the story.* *It's like asking a stunt-man to write a script and being surprised when it turns out to be an "action packed" story with little to no dialogue.*

Everything here is pretty good, except you neglected to make the audience care. We don't know what or why. We have no idea how this would affect us... you know- the hypothetical protagonists of a civilized people on a world near whatever this nonsense is.
@deliriumarts Жыл бұрын
First of all, thank you for your honest review! Of course I agree with you that it seems a bit incoherent in the first place, but will have a fitting piece in the Zephid universe as a whole and in the future. This is only a part of the big ZEPHID universe. Of course I want to give the viewer as well a room for own interpretations. In the cosmic horror genre, even with stories from LOVCRAFT, it's not always clear what's happening and that's what makes it so appealing. Thanks a lot!
@seanrosenau2088 Жыл бұрын
And this video is exactly what Lovecraft meant when he mentions 'fear of the unknown'.
@Wishbone1977 Жыл бұрын
@@deliriumarts In Monty Python's Flying Circus it's also often not clear what is happening, but that doesn't make it horror. Merely being obtuse is not an art in itself (unless you are into the dadaist movement in a big way). For the audience to care, what is happening has to somehow affect someone they identify with, but in this case there is noone to identify with and what is happening affects noone. And while leaving room for interpretation can be a fine thing, there is such a thing as _too much_ room for interpretation. Based on what we see alone, "an alien wakes up from his nap and goes to feed his pet" is as likely an interpretation as anything else.

Thank you very much, I really appreciate that! In fact, we are currently setting up our own small platform in the form of art, texts and mental ideas, on which we would of course like to open up own interpretations of the ZEPHID universe in a completely open manner. Entirely in the style and mind game of H.P. Lovecraft and open to your own interpretations. Unfortunately, everything is still under construction, as we are only a small team at the moment and everything still needs some time. But of course we are always open for support from creative people! I hope there will be more info soon after everything is a little more structured.
