Really elegant little dagger. I made one similar to that some years ago & I've noticed that its blade shape & overall sillouette are similar to a rather unusual Swedish great sword I have seen.

Very unusual, but attractive nonetheless! It seems to have design elements of both rondel, and bollock daggers. For example: the "guard" with those completely downward pointing quillons is much more reminiscent of what you'll see on bollock daggers. Also, even though it's supposed to be French in origin, it's very similar to many German so-called "Landsknecht" daggers. Very interesting indeed!

Given my studies into weapon hilts with gems and gemstones, in addition to the general aesthetic, it looks more 17th century to me. Gems on arms became _far_ more common from the 17th century onwards, and a lot of the ones I have seen from before that had the entire pommel made of gemstone (most commonly rock crystal, although I know we have one in... was it jasper? something like that). Conversely, the style seems _kind of_ reminiscent of Emperor Maximilian's weapons, which included a dagger/short-sword with gemstone cabochons.

I agree, similar to many things, but also weird.

Off to study the collection of Knights tomb effigies and source book paintings to see if any show this type of Rondel.

@armsarmorinc.4153 Do you have a email or something to submit other oddball daggers like these? I have a really huge oddball one (18+ inches) that I can't get any answers about what it is exactly from any folks who know blades so far. It's so odd I think you would at the very least get a kick out of seeing it. I put a video of it on my channel as btw. Thanks

I'm curious why you call this a rondel and not a bollock dagger ? It definitely has little, almost vestigial, bollocks, as well as the little "guards" extending downwards from the bollocks that are typical of earlyish bollock daggers.

You must have watched a different video than everyone else.

the pommel is a disc, or rondel, though the two types are very related and there are many overlapping examples. I think the Met calls theirs a 'kidney dagger', which is just prudish speak for bollock. I think either is reasonable. 😀

Know anybody with an XRF analyzer? The steel composition might lead to were it was created. It's just that it looks like something that you see in the brass shops at local Malls.

@kermit2999 XRF guns require Certification to use, and theyre not cheap lol.

@@ASquareNarwal research is never cheap if you really want to figure out what it is. 6 thousand dollar dagger or maybe it's something not worth the materials it's made of. With no providence or history it's difficult to judge where it came from. Coastal France has seen a lot of various trade thru the ages, if I recall that's the grave area it was found in. It would be interesting just to know where it was made and how long ago.

That looks very much like some letter opener resting on the desk of a rich 19th cent captain of industry residing in his fake castle at the Rhine Valley. It “feels” fishy to me.
