Proffie vs CFX

Which neopixel lightsaber board is better? In this video I go over the differences between the two systems and the reasons why I like one more than the other. Let me know which one you prefer and why in the comments!

True, but it’s a lightsaber/Star Wars channel. If it’s mainly lightsabers, then that’s already a very small audience and if you take a bit to search there aren’t many lightsaber channels that are over 100k. Soo for his content he’s not really “underrated”

The boards used to be a lot closer in functionality but Proffieboard had just leaped way ahead thanks to the community coding new features. Now with Proffieboard v3 in the works I doubt I'll ever spend twice as much for a cfx. Nice video

@@PicklemanKZbin the version I'm talking about is a hardware version. So the v2.x can't get an "update" for it. It just has better/more hardware. The earlier proffieboards can get updated firmware, proffieOS, but that has nothing to do with the board itself. They just won't be able to use some of the improvements due to not having the hardware to support it.

@@PicklemanKZbin oh it will be out. It is designed and there are quite a few in the wild used for development. In case you aren't up on current events there is a huge chip shortage. I build my own proffieboard v2.2 and I can't really get my hands on parts for it. All the files necessary to build one yourself are available from Frederick's website and support for it are in the latest firmware but you won't find the parts. Maybe one day. We never should have allowed China to corner the market on electronics production.

CFX seems like it has less features and slightly harder to use although its WAyyyy easier to add Soundfonts ETC. Why cant they just make a proffie version that still has all the cool features that proffie has, but make it easier to code and add soundfonts. That would be game changing

You can change blade colors and blade profile with one button on the cfx. Just press and hold button and twist hilt, goes into color profile, and if you press and hold button again while in this menu, you can change blade profile.

For the average consumer, yes for the most part. For those wanting to push it further, you can go as far as installing IR receivers on the hilt, installing IR blasters on a… blaster… and you got yourself a laser tag setup with blaster block role-play available. We’ll, as long as the board is programmed to read incoming IR blasts to trigger blaster blocks when received.

IMHO... Proffie vs CFX is similar to Linux vs MS-Windows... CFX and MS-Windows are relatively easy to operate and "ready-to-use" out of the box. Meanwhile, Proffie and Linux might need some tinkering from the users, but both have wider range of potential depending on how the users program them. So, which one is better? It all depends on what we plan to use them for, and how much time and energy that we are prepared to invest to learn about maximising the potential our soundboard.

Proffie wasn't always 100 dollars and it's only recently that the board price has jumped up. Still way better than cfx when it comes to features. You will have to determine if it's worth now or not.

I wanted to get a bane mk2 as my first saber and then figure out what parts I'd need to put the hardware in myself. I am not sure what board would be best to get there's a bunch of diff ones I've heard of. Any suggestions? Would love if someone could give me a shopping list. So I’m trying to work on potentially doing a qui gon saber but want neopixel snd a lot of the features, and it’s only one button. Am I right in that CFX v10 can’t use a lot of the features with only one button? I don’t want an aux button on my qui gon saber as it’s so clean with just the one.

So cfx does lose features but it is easier to manage and customize. To customize cfx all you need is the SD Card. For proffie you need a lot of things. Blade styles loaded in the config. You need the config loaded and clarified in arduino. Though proffie has a bit of a learning curve, it's still the best board on the market for neopixel lightsabers

It can be used in both mac or windows very easily. Bluetooth editing is possible with both boards but that's if you solder a bluetooth module designed for such editing.

Are there any good resources out there or videos on how to do all of the arduino things and is it a free program or no? Thanks for the help! Maybe, since this will be my first install it would be better to go CFX and find an aux button somewhere low profile I can hide it isntead of going Proffie..need to make sure the CFX will fit in my korbanth hilt though.

I personally would not recommend crimson dawn. Many customers have been complaining about what they get. You get what you pay for. I actually have some people who are sending me their saber from crimson dawn to upgrade. I would also recommend you use proffie. The features you get with proffie are the best in my opinion. I have videos going over all of proffies features you can watch.

Hey there! Really good comparison, unfortunately sabers are really expensive, the neopixel/ heavy dueling kinds with all these fancy things enabled. I'm not too sure how fonts work but I assume you can buy/download and add it with a computer. I haven't really seen any videos on how to do this. I'm looking for a good first saber/pair and I don't want to buy the wrong one. A neopixel pair could run 500$ easily :/ crazy

Yeah they are expensive. If you are wanting a pair of Neopixel sabers it will cost more though. Most are $500-$700 for just one good saber. I don’t know any company that is selling them cheap enough to get two for $500.

@@majorwakanda8858 I doubt it. All CFX has in terms of gesture controls is ignition and retraction. No responsive effects as of yet. In all honesty I don't know what Erv is doing. Proffie has Battle Mode now, which is insane. ProffieOS6 will have the ability to switch blade styles and partially edit blade styles on the go, which'll be pretty cool.

I'm about to try loading a new soundfont from Kyberphonic onto my CFX Rotj Luke. Is it as simple as pop the SD card into a multifunctional card reader, drop the new file into the saber files, number the new one whatever is next profile # wise like "18-"? The saber has blade profiles and colour selections in it so I could just pick from the saber menu and save while using it to go with the new font?

that's it. Put a font-config and leds.txt file in there as well if the font maker didn't provide a default, pick one in another folder. You can also copy your new font using the mass storage over USB to the SD card

Proffie is open source and normally when purchased is not coded at all. Some places do sell it with a default config, but most don't.

The soundboard has nothing to do with dueling capability. I would recommend not dueling with neopixel sabers cause if you break the blade it’s $100 to replace. The blades aren’t as fragile as many think tho.

You can buy them from companies or sabersmiths. If you get one from a sabersmith you can customize it how you want but companies don’t allow you to do that right now. It’s up to you. Companies - 89Sabers, Korbanth, 7chambers, Vader’s vault etc...
