To add to this, they wait upon the higher ranking person, having the same root word as waiter. They usually come from lower ranking noble/wealthy families. In fiction it will be a crap shoot if you get a lady in waiting who is willing to wait upon (serve) the higher ranked person, or if they consider themselves too high born to actually do work.

Consorts are women who are competing in trying to bear Emperor’s child, while Ladies in Waiting are high status women who care for their mistress with maids used to do a lot of the work.

The reason why Maomao gets drawn as a cat or has cat ears is because of her name. Her name is written as 猫猫, 猫 means cat and it is pronounced as "mao" in Chinese.

Xiao can mean little, so Xiaomao can mean Kitten.

The apothecary diaries is one of the few 10/10 anime’s I’ve watched in 2023 I’m so glad you’re reacting to it!!💕 it’s has an amazing premise, one which I’m also new to but it was fun learning things and maomao felt like such a fresh character too

This is a fictional nation very strongly based on 15-16 century china (some limited but important contact with the west, but not for the main public). Warning: some modern knowledge you'll see are modern in the west, but they were known, in the form presented here, for much longer in the east. It is dangerous to try to apply modern western interpretation: exemple: "I want you to..." & "could you..." from a superior are both orders, but the first come with autority and power, the other it's on you to make it happen, trying to use autority over you station/place would end in punishment. Finaly: servant girls are commoners, ladies-in-waiting are usualy minors noble daughter or very influencial/rich families daughter. Ladies-in-waiting commoners are rare and distiguished from "normal" ladies-in-waiting, if you wonder why Maomao isn't dressed as the others. (As a sevant, she was dressed the same as the others since they were all from the same class/station)
