The Premier League was played in a round-robin format in the group stage. 2 points for a win, 1 for a draw. In the event of a tie, the number of frames won counted. The top four then played best of 9 matches in the semi-finals and best of 13 in the final.

Instead of balls pocketed till the end it’s a point game. Little difficult at first but fairly easy to learn. Hard part is learning the new table.

Table is much bigger, pockets are much smaller and are designed to throw balls out instead of angling them in. I was raised on both and consider snooker to be the far harder game. Just pocketing the balls is much harder. Steve Mizerak used to go over to England and enter into tournaments. He didn’t win much but I think he eventually got a high break of 79 points iirc. Always admired him for giving it a serious go.

The ref would likely have considered that type of intentional foul misconduct enough to award the frame to Selby. He was being lenient with the other intentional fouls, what you suggest would have been too much.

None of the miss call were questionable, Ronnie was trying to refer to the rule where the attempt is good enough in a near impossible snooker, this snooker was fairly straight forward. For the miss not to be awarded Ronnie would need to hit the object ball, if he then went in-off, the ref wouldn't have awarded the miss, but ref made the correct call on all three of the first attempts, but should have awarded the frame after the first deliberate foul, just Ronnie showing his lack of skill and playing up like usual.

This miss rule was an attempt to prevent players from trying to "get away" with something. Ronnie proved in his second attempt that he didn't try to get away with it. He actually came quite close in hitting the yellow, which was a very difficult yellow to hit, even without trying to get it safe. So he did not agree with the miss call after the second attempt. He even tried the shot on the jaws, two times, which certainly wouldn't have left it safe, so he stiil didn't try to get away with anything. As a matter of fact, he came quite close, but still the referee called a miss. Than Ronnie was so disgusted by the ref, that he deliberately fouled in protest.

You can’t just walk off the work site when you don’t want to do something can you? No you do the job and hate it later. That’s why it’s your profession.

I'm sure it was possible the first way, but the risk was of catching the black, which would be almost twice the penalty of a simple miss, so he could get two attempts at the off-the-jaws shot for the same cost. I think Ronnie's gripe was that since Mark got a free ball, calling a miss was unnecessarily punitive.

Ronnie knows his psychology - he's aware that he starts to lose interest in slow games and that once he loses interest he doesn't play as well, so I interpret this as him doing what he can to keep the pace of the match up. Everyone knows snooker is partly a psychological battle - just think back to Ronnie's match against Peter Ebdon in the 2005 World Championship. Players know that pace is Ronnie's strength, so it shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone that slow, tactical play is used deliberately by players against him. This is just his way of combating it. None of that is against the rules of snooker, or bad sportsmanship. He didn't break any rules here - he continued playing until he was mathematically unable to win the frame, and then he conceded.

If it's a game between friends/amateurs etc the miss rule is not normally played.its really for the professionals cause the ref has to judge if a good enough attempt has been made to hit the ball. So if there is no ref there is nobody to judge if the player has made a good enough attempt or not. Also most of us don't have the skills the pros do,so it's very different cause we may be trying our hardest but still getting no where near the ball. So this only really applies at the top level

The miss rule obviously needs to be addressed and in its current form has ran it's course .Since the miss rule is supposed to be for the reason of an opponent playing an escape which results in gaining an unfair advantage, my personal way to address the entire situation would be balls can be returned to their previous position but only the original foul points will be awarded to the player receiving foul points which is equally unfair under certain circumstances.

My proposed solution is to allow the fouler to decline to retake the shot, which then allows the opponent to move the cue ball to any position on the entire table. Gives them some power to say "thats enough, lets get on with it"

Honestly I don't like matches with time limits. At least may be it could changed a little bit: For example, it could be done with a kind of over all match time control as in chess, so every player gets 10min for the frame and has to press a shot clock (and may be 10s increment for each shot). That way you can think about difficult shots longer than for easier ones.

It's a one-cushion shot that is possible with no spin at all, hitting the most simple entry-equals-exit vector. Ronnie doesn't WANT to take this shot because there is no way OUT of that after hitting yellow, but that's not the problem of the rules. The rules say: You have to make best efforts to hit yellow, no matter what happens after. And he didn't even TRY to play the simple route via the right cushion. So it's absolutely fair that the referee called a miss - he did not make his best efforts.

The first 2 shots were the only angle but, even then, he had to play with spin because the straight line meant going into the middle pocket. Ronnie made 2 reasonable attempts. Both times the white would have been safe had he actually hit the Yellow....that means he did TRY. A miss should not have been called. Ronnie played the pocket bounce because his first angle was being called a miss. The first pocket bounce showed, quite clearly, that it was, again, a reasonable attempt as he nearly made the shot. 4 foul and miss calls when all 4 shots were actually good efforts to make the shot. The Referees are given too much leniency to make "judgement" calls in this. Ronnie was right to protest in the end because this rule is a bad one.

@bad1dobby That's kind of the point....judgement calls ruin any sport that's build on a very clear and defined rules system and designed to be able player skill. Saying that it's up to the referee whether the player made their best effort also means that the referee is making a judgement based on what they think the skill level of THAT particular player is....which, again, takes away from the fact the game is supposed to be able rules and allow player skill to be the determining factor of who wins. Opinion and judgement should not be a factor. The simple answer is that 3 "misses" should be the maximum called when looking at a snooker situation. In theory, this allows a potential scoring of between 12 and 21 points from a snooker. (4x3 for basic miss, 4x7 if they hit and pocket the black each time). 3 is my view....though they could make it 4 or 5....depending on what they decided was a reasonable potential points penalty for failing to get out of a snooker. They only "judgement" which I think needs to be made is how many points a single snooker should allow a player to gain.....a limit on that would resolve the issue. Having a single snooker be what defines and entire frame because of a "judgement call" by a referee is ridiculous and takes away from the game. If a player isn't actually doing their best during a game....they lose. If it's deemed that they're being deliberately out of order....unsportsmanlike conduct and a "warning" can be given (just like for lewd gestures, etc). This rule, however, was wrong in it's definition of allowing a referee to decide whether or not a player is "trying their hardest". My attempt to get out of this snooker would be much worse than Ronnie's....but it would be MY best attempt.

The miss rule was meant to be used for a deliberate foul. I've seen it called when the cueball finishes 1mm from an object ball. Ronnie is demonstrating the difference between a valid attempt to hit the ball (the first two attempts were very close) and a miss. He's basically saying 'you keep calling miss, this is what a deliberate miss looks like', the ref is an idiot. On the first attempt there was a free ball, that should be enough. The rule is not well enforced and should be rethought.

The ref was correct to call a miss every time, the ball was a relatively easy hit (not easy to get safe, but that's irrelevant). Selby did nothing wrong. Ronnie was having one of his funny turns. If you pause it at just around the 15:51 mark you get a lovely top view of the path, in his first attempt Ronnie could have hit much closer to the middle pocket with a touch of left hand side and hit at least half of the yellow. Certainly within Ronnie's capability. The ref knows it, he knows it, he's having a tantrum for no reason. The ref doesn't base a miss on whether the escape is easy to get safe from, simple as that. And as for Selby putting him back in, why shouldn't he...let's say he knew it was going to wind Ronnie up, so what? You don't just play the table, you play the opponent as well. People always talk about great players having great temperaments, but for some reason, when Ronnie displays his bad temperament it's the other players fault all of a sudden. Quinten Hann was infamous for having one of the worst temperaments, but he was hardly a great player, so people don't mind bringing it up. But as far as I'm concerned, just because Ronnie is likely the greatest player to play the game, I can't overlook instances like this where he was his own worst enemy.

@@roberttruesdell6151 I think Ronnie was protesting at his 'actual' attempts being ruled a miss by the ref (a miss is called if the ref feels there was a easier shot to play that was not taken or if he feels the player hasn't put sufficient effort in to hit the target ball), Ronnie felt it was impossible to hit so felt the miss called was harsh, added to this was Selby repeatedly being a dick not taking the free ball which was his right to do as leading up to this there'd been a lot of mind games going on during the match (standing in each others way, quick aggressive responses on the table etc.) PLUS Ronnie and the ref seem to have a bit of bad blood between them so it looked like Ronnie went into a 'well bollocks to the pair of you' mode

Hi . Allow me please to kindly explain the game, brother. You ACCRUE POINTS by potting balls. Red = 1 point Yellow = 2 points Green = 3 points Brown = 4 points Blue = 5 points Pink = 6 points Black = 7 points. You have to pot a red, then one of the other colours listed above (Yellow, Green, Brown, Blue, Pink or Black that we'll call "colour") ... red, colour, red, colour, red, colour alternatingly. When all of the reds have gone, after the last red and any colour, then the finishing sequence is yellow, green, brown, blue, pink, and black. For maximum points, playing reds/blacks is the best way plus the finishing sequence, if you can for the 147 maximum, but depends on the play, and where you are on the table. So if you pot a red 1 point, then a pink 6 points, another red 1 point, black 7 points ... the break is so far 15 (1+6+1+7 ... 15). Fouls are usually 4 points given to the opponent, such as in-off (cue-ball goes into pocket) or a miss, except if one accidentally pots a blue when playing red (5 points), or a pink (6 points penalty), or a black (7 points) to the opponent, or when wrongly hitting one of those balls during a snooker getout or other situation when going for a red or another colour. For instance, at 16:12 to 16:27, being snookered with no direct path to the yellow ball, Ronnie misses the yellow, the intended ball to play as per the finishing sequence, and hits the pink, a foul, so Selby's score gains 6 more points, from 53 to 59, because Ronnie's cueball hit the pink ball worth 6 points. The player with the most points wins that frame. Of a certain number of frames, say, 6, 17, or 35 as in the final, the player with the most frames won wins the match. It brings back memories playing snooker everyday on my 6 feet by 3 feet table in my old house as a youth lol. I haven't played for ages since moving into an apartment. Hope this helps a little. Rule states "best of the players ability" and in the days of Davis and Parrot and Taylor, a good attempt or 1 or 2 cushion was enough but now i seen 4 cushion misses still a miss?? and it seems that ANY close non strike of the object ball is called a miss no matter how difficult it is and Ronnie here is just trying to change the balls a bit so he can maybe have a diff escape.

Poor sportsmanship by Ronnie. For any top-32 player, it isn't a particularly difficult snooker to get out of, it's a one-cushion escape. Ronnie's second attempt at a one-cushion escape is pretty close. He just needs to hit the left cushion a millimetre or two further down. But he doesn't want to just hit the yellow - he wants to hit the yellow and leave it safe. Tough, Ronnie, the rule says you have to try to hit the yellow, and the rule takes precedence over what you want.

What was Ronnie thinking? His first snooker escape, down the left side of the table, bounced off the left side cushion about 30cm from the middle pocket. The narrator said, he missed it by a country mile.” So I’m wondering wtf he was thinking here. If he thought he couldn’t win with how the cue ball would end up after honestly trying to strike the yellow, even though he was up 3-nil in a best of 7, then what’s the point of acting like a bitch about the miss rule? I fully understand what Ronnie did. The miss-rule gets annoying sometimes. So he decided to give that one frame away by making a clear statement and focused on the next which he won with a total clearance. At the end he acchieved his goal and won 5-1.
