Well I'll tell you what, at 110 yards that lowly .270 with the lightweight 130 nosler partition bullet went through both lungs, the heart and then the liver as it finally came to a halt in the off side hide. I would say that the 30-06 is even better than it was int he past. First we have traditional bonded bullets, partitions, A-Frames and the like. On top of that solid coper bullets have gotten so good that you realisticly shoot 130gr. to 168gr. and use the added velocity to your advantage. Generaly traditionaly for the last 30 years I have been very much against 150gr. bullets in 30-06 and 300WM but with the advant of such fantastic solid copper bullets the case can be made especially int he 30-06 for the use of lighter bullets with out giving up anything! The 30-06 can sling a 130gr. solid copper bullet well over 3000fps.

IMO 270 is a PERFECT 'all around use' cartridge. Even the 130grs are within 200-300 ftlbs of a 180gr 30-06 at any distance so a deer or antelope will never notice and that 150gr accubond or 145gr eldx from a 270 is basically the same or MORE energy than the 180gr '06 so you are good to go for elk BUT you get a flatter trajectory than the '06.

I think everyone misses the point of the 270 Win. you can carry an ultra-light rifle with a 22 inch barrel, get 3268 Fps. out of a 130 grain bullet, have the recoil, just at or just under the 30-06, and can kill anything on earth minus dangerous game. if you get a custom break down rifle, with two barrels, you get 2930 Fps. out of the Berger 170 grain bullet. Which is right at the 6.8 Western performance so why would I get anything else??? Now I am older now, and with the under performing ammo out there I would stop at Elk, and below for the 270 Win. What powder, brass, and bullet are you using to get 3200+ out of shorter barrels? R-26 is by far the fastest powder I've found for the heavier bullets, and R-16 does seem to get near 3200, but in my experience, using the highest-capacity brass, trying to get to 3200 with a few different bullets got me ejector marks in a couple different guns.
@bobkat16632 ай бұрын
R-26 for me is by far the best powder I have used in a 270 Win. Brass, Alpha Munitions, Norma, Lapua, but those will cost you. Honestly, you want a 270 Win. with a 26 - 30 inch barrel, in such a case you can get higher fps. or can get the same fps. as a shorter barrel but will longer burning, and less powder, which equals to longer barrel life and less recoil and recoil vel. Sadly everyone makes a 22 or 24 inch barrel. Over the years I have noticed for longer shots, a 1/9 twist barrel is ideal for the 270 Win. I think Browning is offering 270 Win. with such a twist rate now. What I would do is get some Hornady Superformance ammo in 270 Win. , and find out what out what you get in your rifle, that will give you a bench mark for what kind of fps. you can get from your rifle.

There were two old timers that spoke about the virtues of the 160 grain Nosler Partition in their 270’s. They have both taken moose as hunters and helped other hunters anchor their moose when they were guides. Know your firearm, practice, and match your projectile with the game - the 270 Winchester will not disappoint. One of the greatest American classics…. Right after my 18th birthday, my grandfather gave me his shotgun and rifle, a browning A5, and a browning semi auto in 270 win. It had a carbine length barrel and the serial number said it was made in 1959. I hunted many years with it,a great rifle for everything that California could throw at it. I shot it at the range out to 500, but my longest hunting shot was a little over 200. Performed perfectly. Your channel always seems to bring back memories. Thank you for all the great info.

It's still relevant. Granted, most of my long-range success has been with antelope. I have taken antelope at 659 yds, 526, 450, 437, 359, all with a 130 gr hornady interbond hand loads. I've taken deer at those yardages, too. Took an elk, too, but that was only 45 yards. It's accurate and deadly.

I grew up with hand me downs from my great grandads, and grandads, big surprise there growing up in a generational hunting family. I first had as a deer rifle which is probably no surprise and am sure many of you will say the samething. It’s was a Winchester Model 1894 .30-.30 manufactured in 1955. It was an anniversary gift from my great grandma to my great grandad. I was the only new gun he ever owned. When I turned 18 he gave his all around big North American game rifle which was an 03 Springfield chamber in .30-06 SPRGF which he bought second or even third hand like most of his other rifles, shotguns, handguns. He always told...son if you take care of this and take your time aim small, miss small this gun will get you anything in America!!! It had done just that for him, deer, mule deer, caribou, elk, moose, bobcats, mountain lion, black bear, grizzly, kodiak, antelope, wild hog, along with countless other sub species. To this day year in and year out these guns bring me great pleasure and joy. My papaw has sinced pass but I’m now the custodian of his entire collection and not get to pass down the heritage and fun to my daughter who just turned 10 along with other nieces and nephews. I also had several granddads who were into guns and was lucky enough to get some of those too. However my dad and my on grandfather are still healthy and able to hunt which is a total bonus for me because I’m still as a 40 year old man Am learning new things from. The Lord has blessed me and my heritage has blessed me as well.

I never shot a 270 but one day I got a bargain new rifle in 270. I could not resist. Bought it then took it hunting for Red deer and I totally fell in love with the 270 even though I dream of a 7mm rifle. However I have a personal dislike of short neck cartridges that most new 7mm come in. So for now I’ll keep going with my love for my 270.

My dad and grandpa owned and operated an outfitting business in the Hoback area of Wyoming for 30 plus years. I inherited both of their Elk rifles and the 270 was the “big” one! They hunted and killed numerous elk with a 257 Roberts and a 270 Winchester (both Pre 64 Model 70s). Currently, my cartridge of choice is the 7mm PRC so I am not saying there is no reason to carry anything larger than the 270, but no matter how much we would like to get around it there is no substitute for practice and precision shot placement.

I inherited a 1980s model remington 700 BDL in 270 a few years ago. Beautiful gun, looks to be almost unused, and i immediately threw a sig scope on it, and bought the cheapest Herters 270 ammo i could find. Haven't taken any game with it, but that gun is very accurate, and doesn't kick bad for not having a recoil pad. I plan to use it almost exclusively the next few deer seasons. And probably black bear seasons as well.

I have a 270 Winchester that my Uncle Bob gave me , I am 74 years old. Back in the day I reloaded this with the Barns MRX which was the finest bullet ever produced. I purchased all the MRX I could find when they discontinued them. And still have 150 bullets in the 250 gr which I have loaded my 338 WINCHESTER Ruger bolt action stainless and a used 340 Weatherby I bought and put a Carlson stock with a Vortex scope. My Son who lives in Alaska shot an 800 lb Alaska Brown Bear with a Remington in the 300WSM firing the 180 gr MRX , all the times the MRX was a one shot kill.

My dad was a Jack O'Connor fan, and my dad loved the 270 win. He reloaded his own ammo for it and shot more deer than i will. By far, he had a jc Higgins rifle before going to a Browning bar. He's been gone 33 yrs.now.I still have that rifle and added a few of my own my prize one is a 1950 winchester model 70 270 it shoots everything herters, fedrals, winchester, hornady, norma tight groups. I have many calibers, but that 270 rifle is the best .

My first hunting rifle, a Winchester model 70 in .270 is still my primary deer & elk rifle. I finally replaced the original Burris 3x9 scope a couple years ago. I love watching this channel and seeing all the cartridge comparisons. Sometimes I think of buying something new, just to get something new, but nothing is compelling enough. Maybe the 6.8 Western, if I had to pick something different. At one point, I thought well maybe I’ll just buy a new .270 model 70 with a new contemporary synthetic stock. Come to find out, they don’t hardly make them in .270. I called Winchester and they told me that .270 is just not a popular enough caliber. Haha. Ok.

First off, that is a beautiful rifle at 3:30 I love my Savage 110 (made in the late 1990s) with the classic wood stock, blued steel and a Leupold Vari-X IIc 3x-9x scope on top. I also want to echo the point about ammo availability and the fact that if you walk into any gun store they’ll have a brand new .270 on the wall. That classic “hunting rifle” look just makes me think about grandpa’s old M1903 .30-06 deer rifle, something about the blued steel, wood stock and classic scope just looks and feels right. It loves the heavier 140-150 grain bullets and is zeroed with 150gr. soft points and it’s almost boringly accurate. Fiocchi Field Dynamics 150gr. PSP, Winchester Power-Point 150gr., PPU (Prvi Partizan) 150gr. PSP, Hornady 140gr. InterLock PSP and many others including Federal “blue box” Power-Shok (130 and 150 grain) I’ve got several boxes of -Hornady Precision Hunter ELD-X 145gr. -Federal Premium Berger Hybrid Hunter 140gr. -Winchester 130gr. Deer Season XP ammo burning a hole in my pocket waiting to be shot, with the rifle zeroed using the 150gr. Fiocchi soft points.

Just a note for those of us at higher altitude. You can stabilize heavier, longer bullets. Reloading Weatherby has several videos detailing how the longer bullets, such as the 165 ABLR, are able to be stabalized in a 1:10 twist barrels. Faster twist is better across all conditions. But if you're a reloader at higher altitude, you can do some experiments for your old 270. The older cartridges are not obsolete even at longer ranges. They just need an update and they can equal or even outdo the new stuff.

I have a Tikka T3X 270 (1:10 twist) mounted with a fixed power 6 x 42 Schmidt Bender. The reticle is rock solid. I shoot exclusively Hornady Superformance SST 140 gr. and zero'd at 200 yds (6" drop at 300yds). I use a range finder and know my ammo ballistics, so can shoot with confidence out to 400 yards. Most game I shoot is within 300 yards. I prefer a neck or head shot as the game drips like a rock without taking a step.

As a kid who grew up with rifles and shotguns in my hands for age 8 on and hunted anything that moved from quail to ducks to squirrels to deer to wild hogs, to turkeys with just home grown ballistic knowledge and then went on to shoot a one point shy of a perfect score in qualification in Marine Boot camp so was allowed to request Scout Sniper School, but have never hunted since, it is very enjoyable to listen to two gentlemen talk ballistics and rounds on the venerable .270 Winchester.

Thanks, as always, for your content, Ron! I’m a hunter in Switzerland and just got a .270 for hunting ibex and chamois in the Alps … as well as red deer, roe and wild boar! The issue here is that hunters must use a minimum caliber of 7mm. Hence a 6.5 is off the table. Nevertheless, your videos convinced me the 6.5 doesn’t have significant advantages over the .270. Moreover, hunters here are also required to take their shots within 250 meters.

I bought my first .270 Win Rem 700 new in 1964 for $89 because an older friend recommended it. I found out after I bought it that the barrel was only 20" long. I put a 4 power Weaver scope on it and sighted it in 3" high at 100yds. I killed many whitetail deer with it some at over 300 yards. I decided I had to have a .270 Win with a 24" barrel so I bought a new Sako Finbear .270 in 1972 (made in 1969) and sold the Rem 700 for $100 (I still wish I had kept it). I still have the Sako and will leave it to my son. I bought a Browning A-bolt .270 Win in 1989 and it would shoot tiny groups (bug holes) at 100 yards with reloads.

I've had a lot of success with the 270 win using monolythic bullets in far northern Alberta. The longest shot I've taken was 264 yards. There really aren't any close shots here. Thanks for review. I’m a fan of the 270 and see no reason for anything else in North America, unless it’s little Florida deer, and then I use a 6mm. I’ve hunted all over the country, taking my two feather weight Winchester rifles chambered in 270. One in stainless the other blued... Both weighing in less than 7lbs, with scope and sling. These little 22 inch barrel rifles loaded with my hand loads have never failed me. 130 gr Nosler ballistic tip boat tail, clocked at 3210 FPS has dropped most everything up to 300 lbs. And the Nosler 150 gr partition clocked at 3050 FPS does the trick on critters over 300 lbs.

Most people aren't capable of 400 to 800 yd hunting shots with any consistency. Everyone wants the newest kid on the block, seems guns have become the cellphone of the shooting world. Competition shooters need to stay ahead of the competition but most hunters have no need for anything new. Here in Northern Minnesota most all hunters shots are under 100 yds. I will admit when it comes to handguns I keep getting the new cool gun, hunting though I am old school,270, 308, 30-30. AR hunting guns in 6.5 Grendel and 450 Bushmaster. Thanks for a great video.

I was taught to understand the capability, flatness and range of a .270 as a young man. I’m still a young man and have educated others about how classic it truly is. Let’s face it, realistic hunting is between 50m-300m but you’re well covered to much higher which is why it shines. I convinced 5 people I know to buy a .270 and none have regretted it. Keeping that amazing caliber alive and in demand for years to come. For reference I use a weatheby vanguard s2 Stainless steel 24” barrel HS-precision stock Vixen 4-16x44 scope I can achieve sub moa 3 shot groups at 100m with at least 5 common, easy to get off the shelf factory loads.
