Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion - the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me - from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

Hello Ron. The three access cheek piece is adjusted by pulling out the cheek riser completely. Then using the allen key loosening the two carbon fiber stays and adjusting the cheek riser laterally. Hope that helps. Also I highly recommend switching out the bottom metal and magazine to the Hawking Precision “Hunter” DBM. That will give you the flush mag you prefer.

I bought a Bergara Crest carbon 7mm prc and it shoots .25 all day. I bought 2 3 round AIC mags, but I agree that metal mags are not for hunting and carbon or plastic flush mount would be best. So far, most manufacturers aren't making those for this type of rifles unfortunately. Hopefully in time the new mags will become available.

Ron I had to smile when you said the word "Wundhammer grip"😊. It brought me back in the day! I was a sniper in a SOG group in the late 1980's through the mid 1990's, what a great era for rifles! Savage still had a custom shop then (late 80's), and I i had Bell and Carlson send them an adjustable 😮stock similar to the one in this video with a "Wundhammer" pustol grip. Two model 112 BV (benchrest/varmint) barrelled actions with heavy profile 26" threaded barrel in .223 and .308. SOOO sweet and accurate! The .223 printed cloverleaf 3/16" groups with Hornady hand loads and was my urban rifle for things like taking out a street light prior an entry team going in. The .308 was a true 1/2" rifle all day long. Loved those rifles! My son still has the .223 which I was allowed to keep😁. Keep up the good work Ron 🙏

Regarding the cheek riser, I really appreciate the adjustable knobs, and specifically purchased my MDT XRS chassis for that reason. If you ever need to remove your bolt in field (to check for a barrel obstruction, or to field clean it), the fact that you can do it on the fly without digging around for an allen key is a huge plus.

If I had my choice I would use a flush mount mag on my 300 Tikka. But where I live, and hunt, we have a lot of critters that would just as soon eat you if nothing else. So I use an extended mag that holds five shots, just a little reassurance when you wish you had an extra bullet in the mag. I don't mind the extended mag on my Tikka, it doesn't rattle. Cheers

Federal makes ammo with the Hornady ELDX bullet and Terminal Ascent. Hornady CX bullets are not pure copper like Barnes. It's a copper alloy with zinc. Not sure if Weatherby is making 7PRC ammo yet but I think Norma will be in the near future

On regards to copper bullets being lighter so that they will properly stabilize is only half the reason they're lighter. They need a certain amount velocity to adequately expand. Ammo companies can't be offering 190 or 200 grain copper ammo even if they stabilize because some knucklehead will shoot a deer at 450 yards and complain about the ammo because it was traveling way too slow at that point. Keep copper lighter to keep velocities up.
@jfess1911
@jfess1911 14 күн бұрын
You are right that the effective range of a well designed lead core bullet can be longer than for a monolithic one, but that is mainly due to BC. The main reason for the weight difference, as Ron stated, is bullet density. Lead is about 27% more dense than copper. The 160 CX is physically larger than the Hornady 175 or 180 grain lead core bullets and eats up powder volume in the case. The 160 CX has the same muzzle velocity as the 175 ELD-X, largely for that reason. The 160 copper bullet can be about the same size as a 195 grain lead-core bullet and requires the same barrel twist to stabilize. The density difference is also why the BCs of the copper alloy bullets are lower than comparable weight lead core. The copper bullets are physically larger and density is important for BC. The velocity needed to expand is something they can control in the design. There are even subsonic copper monolithic bullets. For examples of supersonic monolithic bullets with lower opening speeds, the Barnes LRX and Cavity Back .277" open down to 1600 fps. That is lower than for Hornady's lead cored SST bullets.

If my rifle / cartridge combo will put all the bullets in the same hole consistently, then the rest of it is my fault. Either the wind got me or I flinched. Half MOA at 100 yards and a complete miss on a deer at 300 yards-- don't blame the hardware. I think you got a keeper!

Just a guess Ron, but it is a Springfield Armory waypoint. I would guess the SA on the brake would stand for Springfield Armory. Nice shooting! I have one in 6.5 PRC and it shoots the exact same. These rifles are great. I was planning on buying this until it took Springfield so long to introduce it. I ended up getting the Bergara squared crest carbon in 7 PRC. I believe that cartridge is going to be around a very long time.

One with a suppressor or a big brake and doubled up ear pro. The Lord's caliber though not the biggest or fastest on the blue planet, still has a well earned reputation for helping experienced shooters develop a pesky flinch. As does just about anything that recoils harder than 308. The other option is to make it heavy like 14-15 lbs to tame the recoil. In other words I wouldn't hand a win mag to a beginning shooter. I've had trouble with new shooters coming in great with there first 3 shots and then rapidly degenerating into puddles when learning on ab cheap light plastic stocked 06' or winmag. I vastly prefer teaching fundamentals on .223, then recoil management on .308 before moving to anything bigger. If you can't practice how you need to perform, you won't perform. I know very few shooters who can actually put 20rds down range in a practice session with an unbraked winmag without fundamentals deteriorating into straight up bad form. Also there's not a lot that needs bullet holes that a .308 isn't capable of handling.

There is not better cartridge than the Ron Spomer 6.5 Creedmoor. Nothing.... However, Ron's womanbjist bought him this super sexy 7x57 so maybe that is now the best new, bad BC forgiven, hot new old stock cartridge to the world according to Ron? Yeah its way better than both of those . Stop living in vintage land and just accept that innovation in modern firearm and cartridge design is better.

It absolutely might perform better than either of those two rifles that you have. It may only be better by a margin, but rifle cartridges have developed for over 100 years since both of those two you mentioned came out. It goes without saying that they’re going to be better.

Great review! I guess I'm too old, but I don't understsnd trying to meld hunting & precision rifle stocks. It doesn't seem ethical or logical.

It's unethical to have a more stable and comfortable stock?

Oh….ok…I think I understand. It’s unethical because it makes it easier to kill animals? Thank you for your input. How long have you been an anti-hunter?

That rifle doesn’t really offer me anything. I have pre 64 model 70’s that are much lighter (8 pounds all up), and they shoot better too. Where’s the balance point in that rifle? Right at the big steel magazine? Not my idea of an ideal hunting rifle. Thanks for the video though.

Then you better hang on to your m70s. My m70 shot great but these new rifles with modern materials and better ergonomics are much more comfortable to shoot when you fire more than 5 rounds a year.

So you spend loads of money, get a heavy rattley. rifle with a magazine that sticks out where you put your hand and that will definitely put your rounds into a pie plate at hunting distances... whoopee !

To bad the magazine isn't detachable and can be swapped out for a flush mount one. It would be nice to say if Hawkings precision developed one already for the short action so the long action shouldn't take long to get to market. Hell, it would be a miracle if springfield themselves even offed a three round straight feed the minimizes the mag protrusion.

@@carlmeaux3518ya especially since we only have metal magazines available and always carry our magazines empty so they rattle, and it's illegal to fill those cups on the stock with qd mounts attached to a sling so you can carry it on your shoulder.

7 Rem Mag is great but with factory 1:10 twist barrels, it cannot stabilize the long high B.C. bullets. SAMMI chamber specs are tighter leading to more inherent accuracy. Plus, lots of hand loaders don’t like reloading belted cartridges like the 7 Rem Mag. 🤷‍♂️

I had a waypoint. It shot 2moa, the extractor broke within the first 40 rounds and the bolt would seize at the rear… warranty service did not fix the rifle after 7 weeks. I will NEVER recommend this rifle to anyone.

I really don't like the trend of manufacturer's painting their carbon fiber. The hunter had to do that as a necessity because carbon fiber shines when it's wet. Instead of manufacturer's actually improving the product, they blotch some paint on it for you. It just comes across as lazy.

I think this style of painting is called ‘camouflage’. I believe it’s meant to help disguise the hunter from prey. I could be wrong, but I believe they make clothing with similar patterns and attributes
