Roof Leak in My New RV and How I Fixed It

This leak happened on my RV at about he 6 month mark. Make sure you use the correct roof sealant for your particular RV.

great job fixing this. have you seen Lexel yet? it is an awesome sealant with great adhesion to all kinds of materials. and it is neither silicone nor latex based. Lowe's carries it and I think it would have been perfect for this type of application.

I have, but I don't go to Lowes very often. I looked up the product literature and it seems to have great performance characteristics. I used the Dap extreme stretch (acrylic urethane) which has similar characteristics have history of using it on several projects that has lasted 5 plus years with good results so that's why I used it. I'm not partial to any particular brand as long as they have good performance characteristics. If a tube of Lexel gets in my hands, I wouldn't hesitate to use it based on the product literature.

Nice job resealing the solar port. Too bad the manufacturers don't pay attention to these obvious details. Was that a factory solar install? Those panels are awfully close to the AC units, which will most definitely cause shadows on some part of the panels at all times. Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that reduces the panel outputs far more than just the percentage of the shadow coverage,

Good observation. Those are factory installed panels. And yes they are installed terrible. They don't perform well at all due to all the shadowing. I will be redoing the solar but just haven't had the time yet.

I had to admit your observations were very annoying to me since I do have the same unit, your thrashing down to our good performing but not perfect units were I thought a bit extreme, but yes these are not inexpensive units and it can be frustrating to find as you have things wrong with their manufacturing quality, we on the other side are not as knowledgeable as you are an our expectations are much less, your observations are never the less well taken, thanks for the positives as well!

Seems most people are happy with their RV until severe issues pop up. If yours has little to no problems, you are lucky and hope you continue to have a great ownership experience. I don't have an issue if something breaks, but I do get annoyed when the original installation was done incorrectly by the experts. Little problems can turn into huge problems later on when the warranty is up. Nothing worse than dealing with mold and rotten wood, and a ruined roof. I've seen too many owners of many different brands run into this issue. They were all happy with their RV until they weren't. I'm just lucky I found my leak before the damage was beyond a simple repair.
