You must maintain a gap of 6 to 9 inches between every panel so that it can withstand strong winds. And the best setup was if you installed all 9 panels throughout the roof vertically with gaps in between them. This gap less 3×3 configuration if act as Kite it could flew up your roof too.

With regard to the batteries for these wireless cameras, consider getting a spare battery (or two) to charge up when the current batteries are discharged. This will cut down on the amount of time a camera is out of commission, plus it will mean only one trip up a ladder per replacement.

When I installed my solar array I also was required to include a #6 grounding wire from the array racking to a 10' grounding rod in the earth. That way, in case my array was ever struck by lightning it would pass most of the energy to the earth instead of all of it going into the solar electronics. Enjoy your channel!

very good info for the family. Why mount them on the roof, putting them up on the roof that can only handle a few units.
@Teutathis
@Teutathis 3 жыл бұрын
@@jameswulzen590 Because it utilize less useful space, requires less work and extends the lifetime of the roof. The energy lost from not being able to angle the panels are usually worth not having to build a platform on your land to hold the panels, especially since you'll usually not stand there and reposition the panels to follow the sun.

Heath, Mike from NREL here. Make sure you have a section of flexible conduit up on the roof that can move when the rack moves (and give it some extra length). And for the racking, you should make sure that steel is bolted through the roof ad through the trusses structure below. Those modules will act like HUGE sails with even a small amount of wind and tear your roof off in a storm. Be safe.
@AParr-cp4ib
@AParr-cp4ib 3 жыл бұрын
I agree. The modules will definitely act like sails, it will take a surprisingly low velocity of wind to get them. . . sailing. Even if they don't appear to move, any wind on them will inevitably cause them to vibrate, sending these vibrations down into the roof connections, where the connecting bolts will vibrate too, if only a little. Even a small amount of vibration, over time, tends to work things loose - especially when said bolts are screwed into to a high-grade particle board sheathing, as they are here. Hopefully, there is a way to rapidly get these panels flat to the roof whenever wind is predicted.

Panels won’t go anywhere, ya, ok, you do realize that you just made a big catch shut for snow that will collect on the backside, keeping it in place until it melts, panels break, or your roof caves in. Your front panels need to be off the roof to allow the snow to go under or the panels flat, keeping snow on top instead….you didn’t think about this when coming up with the concept of the panels on your roof.

This was my thought as well. I wonder if some heat tape would help mitigate the wedge-like issue? If you get a few days of accumulated snow you'll have all that weight up there if you can't get rid of it while it's coming down. I'd just do the one for now, test it through the winter and improve the other 2 once you learn something.

You just metioned “Unistruts”……..that is exactly what this old Civil Engr would have used ….plenty strong. Try to achieve triangles of support to the array with the Unistruts. The triangle is the strongest structural shape……….square structural shape have the least rigidity. Be sure the vibration stays under control. One more word of warning…….beware of standing snow behind the panels. The snow is not the biggest problem…..rain on deep snow can create loads you never dreamed of……..we lost several big cruisers on Lake George back in the 70’s when a warm rain hit our steel storage building big sections of the building came down. A big snow blower now lives on that big roof. Good luck. GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY. JoeB

Once the ice damming begins and threatens your solar panel bottoms, you can always add heat tape to keep the ice melted and use all your solar power to do so. Water tight I think you are dreaming with your system because it will make ice and snow stay there where there are a lot of holes. Someone once mentioned that they got great results spraying a sugar solution that when dries provides a tacky surface to walk on. Like cola, gatorade, sugar water, etc. Rain will wash off.

Hi buddy just watching your roof solar panel finish and as a thought could you put another upright from the top rail to the middle of the panels at a 90 ish degree to avoid putting another rail attached to the roof. Love the whole deal of red poppy ranch our favourite channel regards Steve and Rachel in Portugal

Thanks for the update on the skid steer and crew cab. The crew cab was in really good condition. As for driving old trucks, I drive a 2000 GMC Sierra 2500 extended cab four door, 4x4 with 6.5 foot bed and hide away goose neck. This truck has 353k miles and lost oil pressure and collapsed a lifter. I recently paid $2,000 to purchase a low mileage engine and have it installed. Had I sold the truck, I couldn't replace it. I have around $3,500 in it now, and honestly can't have a "nice truck" as I'm not nice to them. It's a daily driver and work truck, so it's beat on but well cared for. I completely understand.

Heath you might try a coating or two of RainX it does a pretty good job on a windshield of repelling rain and makes it easier to clean bugs off the windshield on the big rig so why not solar panels for the snow?

My roofer says buy Neoprene soled shoes. I would also try boar shoes such as Sperry Docksiders. The boat shoes are great on wet fiberglass boats. The neoprene soles are sliced with little slits. Probably too late with this info now but you do need a SAFETY HARNESS AND TIE OFF HARDWARE. JoeB

I predict that the first violent storm will tear the living hell out of all those panels and take part of the roof with it, the back of those panels being up 51º will create a perfect spot to catch the wind.

A quick way to fish wires is to take a piece of sponge sightly bigger than the conduit and tie it to a piece of string. Then use a vacuum on the other end of the conduit to suck the sponge through.

That array is like a sail and will be a “catch all” for wind, leaves and snow. A high wind may take it off the roof someday😬

I'm also wondering about the increased snow load, especially if there is rain on top of it, with snow being trapped behind the panels from storms?

I was going to say the same, had thought about engineering a solution for our roof to allow them to raise lower by electrical command and be flat down when wind snow on the cards. And yes I could, but it’s the hassle of doing it vs cost benefit etc.

Thanks for the update on the sale of the 4 door Chevy square body. I didn't even realize the skid stear was gone. I guess someone else noticed that. With the time constraints on all you are doing I can see the logic of letting the truck go to a new home and upgrading the skid stear since no matter what you tried it was a stubborn cuss. LOL Hope the next item to replace it will be less aggrivating.

Approach Shoes or trail running shoes maybe the best bet. I don't know how much grip these shoes can give on metal, but they have so much grip compared to regular sneakers. I have trail running shoes, and I wear them all the time in winter time, not just when I go running. Where I live in Canada, winter road is often covered by snow and ice. I can sprint on ice with half inch snow on top without a problem. I don't have approach Shoes, but they are designed for rock climbers to get to climbing spot, and they should be able to take some steep rocks and rock slabs.

Suggest you eliminate all the loose loops and danglers of wiring on the underside of the panels. Gorilla tape works good. If it dangles, it will eventually break. It will never break when it is convenient to repair. I know you would have covered your arse regarding the emergency generator and its fuel. The worse senario is probably deep snow and being unable to plow yourselves out. The last year we lived in Connecticut, the accumulated snow pack was about 85 inches. We plowed until there was no room for more snow, then the snow blower blew the new snows over the plowed piles. Thank goodness we had stockpiled gasoline for the tractor and the blower. If i remember correctly, your gen set runs on Propane. Do you have any propane heaters for when the gen set fails ….Full supply of firewood? Please remember…..Boy Scouts motto ….always…”Be Prepared” . If you are fully prepared for a horrible winter and do not need all the prep… YOU WON. ..if the deep snow and sub zero temperatures never come that winter…..YOU WON. You saved propane and wood and gasoline. If you have a brutal winter and are fully prepared….YOU WON . See how lucky you get when you are fully prepared. The kids can even start a fire without matches now unless you also stockpiled matches or the fully filled propane torch bottles and striker. Winter is coming and it will be unexpected. Take care and be safe. JoeB
