The shingle goes up quite a bit under that cap seal so it's actually over top of shingles as well, but yeah that space around the pipe is pretty big. seems they would have made the shingles closer to the pipe, also I don't like to see nails on the lower end of the boot seal because they will likely leak later on once the tar dries out.

This is a great video, love the advice and an obvious expert. One note, I believe you want to do the nails above the tar strip so there is no possible water leak gap, can check on the install instructions of the shingles to confirm. This is true for the flashing around the vent as well, you want the nails under the shingles up the slope of the roof so as to not create a hole for water to get in, though since she's sealing it with roofing cement it's probably fine as long as the cement is rated to last as long as the rest of the flashing.

Roof Stapled ? Check all ! Polyurethane caulk tacks up faster. Seal tab area with it. Pipe and vent flashings? If sealant is needed. Most cases it was installed wrong. Both flashings will (after what she did) will leak. There's not enough coverage at the top on both. Also, her extension ladder wasn't extended safely, and I'd rather ding up a little piece of shingle than put two holes in the fascia.

You'd be off my job if you nailed into a fascia board like that just for a ladder. No point in nailing into that drip edge either. If you have to nail, nail below drip edge and hit with some white caulk/silicone when done. Having said that, I know most people don't have a roofing ladder handy. From experience, unless you have some roofing experience from/with a roofer that knows his/her trade, I would just call a roofer. If you don't know what you're doing you can get up there and make things a lot worse than they are. But if you have the basics, you can and will save some money.

As a long time roofer I have quite a lot to say here. For starters, we're taking roofing tips from someone that doesn't even know which way a ladder goes. And a tip before I start, temperature is a big factor. Colder weather leads to brittle shingles breaking much easier, so be careful or you'll be replacing even more. Shingles are more commonly installed with nails, in that case the way she ripped up the shingle and pulled the staples from underneath it, would have damaged the shingle with nail holes. She should have also separated the shingle above it and removed the fasteners from that shingle first. And you want to put your new nails above each slot in the shingle, just below the tar line. Nail below, not on tar strip. Manufacturer specs. Less asphalt to grab on the tarred area, and not so close to the slot of the shingle above it, where water comes in. Water could possibly reach that nail and rust and leak over time. Next, I'm not sure why you'd nail a board (holes) into your fascia for your ladder instead of maybe a few barely noticable scratches on the trough. And fascia quite often has metal flashing on it. You can also put a shirt over the ladder before resting it against the trough. If no trough, the shingles may bend down a bit under the ladder but can be adjusted when you're done. If you look at 4:20, She was not done with that "boot" (flange). The shingles over lapping it also need to be nailed back down or wind will catch them. Also the right side had no shingle over lapping at at all. Water will get in under the side and leak through the pipe hole. And they are not very easy to remove. They'll likely be nailed all the way around under the shingles so be careful not to damage more shingles. Same goes with the vent, which was also conveniently loose and installed with staples for this video lol. She did caulk after but ideally you dont want your nails angled like 4:17. The nail head itself helps keep water out of the nail hole. Back to the vent. All vent styles are different shapes and sizes. They'll likely not have the same size hole in the shingles. You may have to cut it bigger or add pieces of shingles to make it smaller. And even if it does fit in the shingles like here, the actually vent hole underneath probably won't line up with the hole in the roof. Also, same as the "boot", overlapping shingles need to be nailed back down. If you look at 5:31, she had WAY too much exposed at the top of the vent. Shingles should be right down close with a small gap for run off. At the very least should have caulked all around that. Also as she did in the beginning, all shingles that you have separated should be sealed back down with caulking or roofing cement. The tar line will never properly seal again and shingles can blow off. Never silicon caulking though. Silicon and asphalt are not compatible and will separate. Last tip, don't expect new shingle color to match. This one seemed pretty close but typically due to sun and weather, new shingles won't match anymore.

If it doesn't leak and looks good it's good. There are a million ways to handle any one situation when roofing. The roof most likely doesn't have a warranty and most situations calling in a warranty is just a pain and you usually end up taking the loss anyways. Roofing is easy, dangerous, and hard all at the same time. Almost anyone can do it as long as they are willing and able to do so.

Welll….. not always easy. Depends on the roofs design, certain flashings needed, tricky penetrations, and the slope. Installing a course of shingles is easy realistically in terms of install method. But so many other things that come into play. Understanding the system as a whole, not just nailing shingles. There’s a shingler, then there’s a roofer. Quite a huge difference.

@@marcmiller789 ya and now where I am plastic cap/washer nails/staples are getting more common. Their not required if your shingling same day as prep, but if your prep is left exposed they require these fasteners. I use them regardless. So much better. Bought a bostich air gun that shoots the staples with the caps. You need less fasteners, and they hold up to the wind so well. And also keep water away from the exposed fastener head and shaft to keep water out. It’s 100% required on tyvek now regardless of your siding the same day. @@marcmiller789 ya no inspections here, but it seems to be a new manufacturer recommendation. Again not so much for synthetic on the roof, more for tyvek it’s forced. For years I was fine just 1-1/4 nails in the synthetic. Never had a leak after a good rain. One day was running late and prepping quickly into the dark, and the next day we got some fucked up torrential rain. I was only doing the lower as the top was already done, but the top had no eavestrough. One of my nails blew through the synthetic, and of course out of all that area it had to literally be where the top drained onto the bottom that the nail blew through. Got quite the leak. Not attic access on that roof as it was front door and living room. Had to remove plywood to get access to remove / fluff and dry the insulation. From there cap nails and never looked back. Lol. One in a million chance but still never dealing with it again. Used handbangers a couple times and at that point would’ve been quicker to just shingle same day 🤣. Bought the gun after that. I just always like to do a full rip/prep before shingling. I’ve worked with guys in the past that rip/prep/shingle same day by sections. I just hate ripping beside new laid shingles too much chance for damage.

Mines flat where I get on and off but still fairly high and my fear of heights is so bad it takes me a good 10/15 minutes of talking myself into it to get down! I usually hug the ladder, close my eyes and hope for the best! 😅been lucky so far! I’m a female btw lol

Didn’t check underpayment for rot when replacing missing shingle. Put your ladder on the rake and don’t put unnecessary holes in your fascia.

I’d rather the eaves than the rake, eaves tend to brake less rake would bend sideways not downwards. Your only folding the first row and starter at the eaves. Your hitting 2-3 shingles on each side of the ladder considering for overlap. I mean I’ve had to do it, but always try not to.

In the UK this is the kind of stuff we put on our garden shed, though no doubt with builders making houses cheaper it will only be a matter of time until this stuff is common house building practice in UK. Many thanks😀👌

Since it works, you should put it on any building. Simple is best instead of over complicated fluff.

You just voided the warranty on the shingles. The nails goes below the tar line and above the rain groove (see label on shingle package). The other two approx 1” from each end. This allows you to nail the top of the shingle below the one you’re nailing. In hurricane areas you may need six nails, two just above and on the side of the rain grooves and one on each end. Shingles should never be installed on a roof under a 4/12 pitch. Otherwise, good job. I admire your work ethic.

Can install on a 2/12 to 4/12 if ice and water shield the whole way where I am. But at that point just use flat rolls honestly. When she lifted out the staples and pulled the shingle out without removing the staples (btw staples 🤮) could definitely tell the roof wasn’t installed properly or you’d have had to life the row above and take those staples out.

Maybe I'm slow but wouldn't it have been better to compromise the shingles versus putting two holes into the Eve?
@randymcarn

A couple holes in the eve board aren't a big deal to must people. They will be practically invisible. If you want to be professional about it, when you take the board down you can caulk the nail holes shut. Also, after putting down a multi-thousand dollar roof I recommend doing everything possible not to compromise your shingles.

Great video! Would be curious if you've ever tried to use a Perma-Boot for a pipe boot repair? I saw them in Home Depot the other day and was just curious.
