As a retired roofing contractor when the roof was first shown the first thing that came to my mind because it was an open area was nail pop. Good video. I used to volunteer and do bi-annual inspections of a little old lady in my church and fix problem areas. She didn't have any money so after fixing about 20 nail pops over a 2 year period I got some guys in the church to pitch in and we roofed it for her for free.

That's a nice church you all go to. No way you could knock on doors and get a set of neighbors to do that. I'm picturing a little old lady smiling after her new roof was installed. I bet she was thankful each time you came out too. Makes me want to return to church and see what it's like there. It was just like you mentioned and probably still is.

@@jvillebil13 I am "the elderly". I have a hard time walking now, and I haven't driven in decades. I think I can still make it to church though. Last few times I went they had loud youthful music and nobody could head each other. Even S.A. was like that. The other churches I belonged to got sold and I ended up moving.

Nice. I am an Atheist, and I help people. Not all good people go to church. But for some reason church gives people a reason to be nice. When you do not need a reason to be nice. Just be nice because it feels good to help those of us who are in need.

Break wind seals loose when it’s cool. Asphalt breaks like glass when it’s cool enough. When the seals are hot you get tear out necessitating new adhesive or if it’s really bad replace the shingle. One time a customer had a hard to find leak. It wasn’t until we took out a shingle that we discovered that the original contractor had used the back of a shingle to knife other shingles and then installed their “cutting board” in the field.

Good stuff.. there are always consequences for taking shortcuts or trying to be the fastest roofer alive!!! Most young roofers know what not to do, but the stress of being too slow and testosterone of being the bad ass makes the repair guy the hero! There is a fine medium where quality meets quantity and everyone is happy!

Thank you for telling me about this good sir. I’m not the handiest guy but I am aware of how often I’m dealing with scammy contractors. The problem is that it doesn’t matter if I know, the work still needs to be done and if I can’t find someone who won’t rip me off I either just have to pay them to swindle me or figure out how to do the job myself. Either way your video helps.

I am a female, and have always been handyvand dont like paying money to a tradesman to do a job i think i could possibly do myself and save tons of money. This content is easier to watch than some. I just find alot of videos are not straight forward and to the point and this guy is. I fontchave alot of time because winter is getting ready to set in. I recently rented this oversized garage to have my art, crafts, and work studio and i was really super excited to get moved in but after a few conversations with the landlord (which was not really t h e landlord landlord because he was subletting the garage space that was a detached garage) he pretty much admitted to me (in writing, who does that) that he knew the roof leaked before i moved in ,but i spent over $2000 to move in and after i told him i was not going to pay the original amount for rent and that i would pay $500 a month and find out about the leaks and such and i would continue to pay that until the problem is sorted out. Now i have decided i am going to fix the roof and not tell him so i can continue paying $500 a month 😂

Excellent video, thank you, yes you are right, the thermal cycling of the nail works its way up through the shingles on top. What about using a nail set to drive the nail through the hole? That way you can lift up the shingle even less, and then use the sealer from the top

kinda disagree somewhat on the brittle test, some are irreparable, but you are right that most roofers just wanna replace the whole roof instead of the repair, a great tool to help on a repair is the roof snake, I think thats the name, helps you not have to bend shingle too far up to make room for hammer, you have the best info on roofing on youtube, keep it coming

I don't think we disagree. I just don't want to give the false impression that everything is brittle and not repairable. Everything is repairable to an extent. But yes, some are worn out and brittle, they will literally crack. The majority of the time, they are repairable, but those others on youtube bend it up over 90° which is a bit ridiculous.

If it's just the one, why not pry the nail out and geocel the hole? Chances are that nail will back out over time. May be rotted wood because of the leak, or nailed to the edge of the plywood.

Is it easier to do this investigation and repair work when the shingles are warm, hot or cold? With nail placement so critical, and imaging hundreds if not thousands of nails in an asphalt shingle roof, it is a wonder there are not more leaks than there are. Would like to see a video where a couple of shingles are replaced in the field, and how that work is addressed.

I remember working with a contractor, and we did the roof in a day and a half. The night we finished, we got a significant sundowner after dark. The contractor got a call in the morning, and the customer said large sections were just gone. The shingles had no sun time to stick together, and they all just started flapping and making a huge sale on top of the roof. Yep, the contractor at the job.

No, as long as you can verify, there is one leaking. Just seal that and any shingles you may split loose. Typically, if you don't have flashing, chimney, pipe boots, or anything like that, this is usually the culprit.

If I didn't like the customer I would use a few pieces of step flashing or coil scrapes. If I did like the customer I would use my sharp flat-bar to surgically remove about a dozen shingles then put in a 4 foot piece of ice and water. Either way, I would run a tube of black-jack under each course and walk them down. I good way to find leaks is by stuffing tissue paper up in the suspicious area of the attic and wait until after it rains. The tissue paper will get wrinkly and stained.

Yea, I hired a public adjuster, State Farm only would cover a section as my Roof has very distinct flat and sloped areas and sectioned off.. I call the adjuster 1 x's a month and they say they are still battling as Il does not require matching shingles and the secton where theleak is cannot be seen from the ground at all ! I have to send a certified letter since it has been a year to terminate public Adjuster contract. If I hire a roofer under that contract, I would have to pay adjuster 20%. They put a tarp but the leak started and I asked if they were going to pay for the extra drywall damage inside due to their tarp install fail. Im going to clime and look at it to determine where leak.. I actually have 2 packs of shingles they left when trying to match. So if I have to I can just use those. Would it be harmful to run a bead of sealant on the vertical seperations in between all of them . I realize it would be over-kill but I dont mind overkill as long as it is not going to cause problems !

It depends on what your sealing, what your attempting to do(stick something down, divert water away from entering, or just plug a hole or caulk a nail head) and lastly the quality of your sealant. NP1 & Vulcan are two excellent commercial grade exterior sealants.

It's best to just pull the nail out, caulk the hole, and if you want to be foolproof, slide a piece of thin aluminum flashing over top of the hole with a dab of caulk on top to seal the shingle above down to it. This works especially well when working with old, brittle shingles that are prone to tear if raised.

@SuhkmahMahnmeet Ай бұрын
@@briandurkin35 I know, not the answer you wanted to hear, but what you must understand is, when nails pop up they do so because of expansion & contraction which means the hole the nail was in also has expanded so if you drive a new one back in, unless you also drive one next to it with the second nails head overlapping the first nails head, it will most likely just pop back up again. With a dimensional architect shingle you may even cut a tooth off of the exposure and seal it down over a hole to blend it in.

Not always so easy to find the leak. The leak could be anywhere above the spot where it drips into the house because water may run down the underlayment or sheathing until it gets to a seam or another open spot.
