I'm not a roofer, but can see how these qualities in a roof can help you decide, ive seen cheap roofs lose 75% of their granules. Malarkey does feel a bit sponsored here I have to say. All in all many roofers use Owens duration and it has a 50 year warranty so I think that vs the price is pretty good. Cool roofs and title 24 requirements, plus newer technology is helping a ton to keep shingle life much past 30 years. I have 2 cheap shingled roofs 25 years old..no leaks, tons of granular loss and a sloppy install. Roasted by cali heat rain and wind. Do your homework people and good luck!

I have recently discovered circular holes all the way through my 8 year old roof, installed by previous home owner. Perhaps caused by smaller summer hail. Lots of granule loss. Leaks. There was some extra shingle in the garage, GAF Timberline. This video was really useful in learning the difference between shingles and I will reference it while getting bids on replacements. Thanks!

Great information and insight. Brings back memories of working as a millwright for a Bird & Son roofing mill. I checked in a lot with the Q&A lab when the plant machinery didn't perform well and I remember their granule tester. It was a "calibrated" wire brush that with so many strokes or cycles under a certain pressure determined if a sample met a granule loss spec. It wasn't just the asphalt but also the pressure they were pressed in with. Too little and they shed too easy; and too much, by only a few pounds per foot, they would have a sheen in certain angles of sunlight. After some warranty claims on faulty shingle granules, we redesigned and rebuilt the press. A good weight we strived for at the time was 75 lbs per bundle of 3 tab for a 30 year roof. Malarkey was in the same town and our biggest competitor. They were the 1st with fiberglass shingles and revolutionized the business with fire resistant shingles; which home owners liked for the insurance discount. I believe Certainteed bought out the mill from Bird sometime in the 1980s

We're about to re-roof and had been favoring GAF UHDZ because of how hot it is in SC and potential for hurricanes (3 since 2016, so the GAF unlimited wind warranty was seductive). Our original roof was OC (Berkshire series which is no longer available) and, based on your testing, I think I'll now have estimates resubmitted with the OC Duration.

I just did research from various sites because we are having a new roof put on our home and wanted to be sure we get a quality product. At first, we were going to get Certainteed (and the Landmark Pro is a decent shingle) but found that Malarkey is better and is as good as they say it is in this video. We are currently having Vista AR put on our roof this week.

Outstanding information brother! we are considering the malarky Vista..the one area I wish malarky improved on would be their very limited color choices..while we are thrilled to see vista now rated as class 4, that line has so few color options and the ones it Does have, are not so p[leasing to the eye.. sienna blend for example, with its checkerboard effect and orangey tinge.. I wish malarky just went with even color tones with subtle ,instead of crazy daramatic highlights..when trying to choose a color option, I also noticed that malarky's stock photos of shingle examples on a home would vary wildly fromone pic to another,even though it was supposed to be the same color!... that said, it seems a fantastic shingle. your review came across as having a Slight bias, maybe becuz you work with malarky products? but you aimed to present the facts, kept it fair and let the testing speak for itself as far as performance...This review was every bit as thorough and extensive as Roofing Insights has done on their channel.... side note: in our neighborhood, nearly Every home has had their roofs redone from a recent hailstorm and the shingles were a couple of certainteed landmark and the vast majority were GAF timberline hdz... I wished I could see malarky examples to view actual ,on house appearances but man, they are rare here!

@@dougvuillemot8670 I saw a video of a guy who bought what he said were 40-year IKO shingles. They totally fell apart in 10 years. The warranty coverage was so pathetic it wasn't worth his time to reply to the offer letter. I don't see expected lifetimes on manufacturers websites. I only see warranty length, which is always related to a manufacturing defect. It would be like buying a set of tires with a 100,000-mile warranty against failure due to a manufacturing defect, but they aren't saying the tires will actually last for 100,000 miles of normal wear. Same thing with shingles. Mostly the warranties are a joke played on clueless people who don't read and think about what the warranty is saying. To get the best lifetime, it is only the quality of the shingle that means anything, that and the quality of workmanship during installation.

I have been in business in Dallas area for 40 years. Without any doubt the Certainteed products are the worst. Absolutely the worst product on the market. My distributor of 39 years had a turnover in general managers. I have 2 jobs installed in last 30 days that are terribly defective. They looked at my roof for 1 minute on roof. I had pulled 3 shingles for him already. He tells my elderly couple they have nothing to worry about. But to give them time to get claim processed. They show up one day later and load up the big pile of shingles which we culled thru. Manufacturer and distributors ware they didn’t pick up that pile of shingles. I even hid a bundle of the shingles in the garage. They saw that bundle and took them too. The roof obviously has problems. They told them unbelievably that the roof is fine. I will have to sue them to get this paid which I will do. Going forward I can avoid their products and will continue to spread the word on Certainteed to my roofing associates. This same exact scenario occurred with Tamko products in 2008 and 2009. They ruined their reputation to the point that many companies still avoid them. Then GAF in 2013-2014. These guys are willing for their product to be endlessly berated because they simply don’t care. They sell all they can produce and could sell more. Most homeowners will not bother to sue because of cost. But this one will. I will pay for it if they don’t. And I will walk with them every step.

Yea, that's not a good experience. All the asphalt shingle manufacturers have had lawsuits against them at some point. I'm in NC and several homes this past late summer and fall had new roofs installed due to a severe hail storm we had. Several of the homes in my subdivision chose Certainteed. Today I went for a walk in my subdivision and came upon my roofer installing Certainteed Pro on a home owned by an employee that works at the lumber supply company where he buys his roofing materials. It was warm enough with high in the mid 50's. I prefer warmer temps myself for my roof job next late spring.The Certainteed shingles for my location are manufactured here in my state in Sanford, NC. Certainteed has been my installers preferred shingle for a long time. I'm sure if he had enough bad experiences with them, he would have moved on from them. Hope your situation gets resolved favorably for you and the homeowner.@@craigburnett6099

@@greyholcombjr.9623 absolutely true. Certainteed has been making non class 4 products for more than 100 years. And they are good at it. I use their other products often. But they have been making class 4 for less than 20. They have 5 times as many defective roofs as all other major brands combined. I suggest you call a local roofing distributor and just ask a few questions. I would calI a local roof distributor and tell them you are using a local roofer for replacement and am concerned with number of defects certainteed has. I would be surprised if they don’t tell u the same thing. I am shocked that they continue to make the same defective products and do nothing about it. Owens Corning, GAF, Malarkey are all the same price with very few defects. Same colors available. The shingles look the same. Just know this. I’ve been a Roofer for over 20 years. The Owens corning sure nail strip does not hold up overtime. The fabric itself will peel off the shingle very easily, especially after it goes through the seasonal changes. From hot to cold. This is a issue because the sealant of the top shingle rest on the fabric of the bottom shingle. So you do not get a good bond from shingle to shingle. it would be better without the fabric strip. Then let the shingle bond to the asphalt of the shingle underneath it. There’s also an issue with the hook blades not cutting the fabric smoothly. hook blades are great for cutting asphalt shingles but not much else. This causes a problem when you’re trying to cut shingles to flash around a pipe or a chimney. Because the blade will pull the fabric strip from the shingle instead of cutting it smoothly .After all the issues I’ve seen with Owens Corning I would never recommend them to anybody or put them on my house.

In your opinion, does Scotchgard make or break a final decision, and is there really an added benefit? Such as if I was looking at the Malarkey w/out scotchgard compared to a traditional asphalt with scotchgard….or does the better performance.
@reliancerooftroop39026 күн бұрын
It’s hard to say. I think Scotchguard protection on the granules definitely is beneficial to slow the dark algae streaking/staining on the shingles. With that being said, it’s also important the granules actually stay on the shingles to work effectively.

There is something missed in your tests which is important to compare. Algae resistance. How does each of these shingle manuf brands hold up to their claims of algae reistance. Excellent reviews! (I had 3 big companies come out and each gave about the exact same pitch and installed only GAF.)
@renurenovationsllc7780 Жыл бұрын
A GAF insider said he quit the company because GAF figured out that the average person stays at their home for less then 7 years. The warranty is transferable once so the third owner gets no warranty. They ENGINEERED the GAF HDZ to last at LEAST 13 years, to accommodate this expected transfer, they may have to pay a few claims, to those that stay at their place, but not many, between people not registering the transfer, getting hailed out, the fact that 90% of houses are not properly vented, and people moving they can make a lot more money, and almost never pay out. It will catch up eventually, looks like they are still getting too much support. When I heard this I quit installing for them so fast, I couldn’t get other shingles stocked and we had some down time. I will not support cheating homeowners for extra profit.

@@skip741x3 my thinking exactly! More asphalt in the shingle may be better in super hot areas of the country.

Good question! Malarkey is very popular in Texas due to its durability and true impact rating. Hot summers there. When installing any asphalt shingle in 90+ heat, it is important not to leave shingles (not yet installed) facedown where the shingle sealant can leave a tar strip mark on the already installed shingles.
@Lukester447 ай бұрын
Really needs to have a pricing ranking - skipping that misses a crucial criteria thst makes a big difference when choosing a shingle. Also would have liked full performance metrics on each test (granule loss), pictures on results after impact test, etc. Would have helped with not feeling as much like a sales ad for malarkey
@reliancerooftroop3907 ай бұрын
Pricing is not consistent unfortunately when switching regions. Pricing does vary but all shingles tested are the main ones offered in our market (Chicago-Midwest-Great Lakes) I am not able to post pictures here in the response but I know the granule loss results varied from 6.59 grams - 30.90 grams. And yes, Malarkey does take the cake in the testing results. Not a sales ad. I encourage you to check out testing and results from other shingle tests (Roofing Insights) Everyone has different testing criteria. Ours is more focused on performance and overall longevity. Thanks for watching!
@Lukester447 ай бұрын
@@reliancerooftroop390that makes sense on pricing, but I hink there should be some way to average them out or even put a disclaimer it's region specific - for instance, if the number 3 shingle costs much less on average then the number 2, it's very helpful to know, and if the 6th best shingle costs more then the 4th best that is also very informative. With the higher price you'd obviously expect a better product, and it also helps show outliers and great value shingles. And yea, just having the specifics of how each performed per test and even standardizing the scoring between tests and showing what the totals were at the end and the difference between rankings is just much more enlightening.
@reliancerooftroop3907 ай бұрын
Total scores are posted in the video with the rankings. As for price, there is not a big difference. Average price for homeowner is within a $1,000 range of each other for your average roof size (markets do vary). Other shingles not tested are in much higher price points. Hope this helps

Completely biased opinion. In addition, he is going to pick and choose stats and use specific words to make it seem like Malarkey is the best shingle on the market. And if it just so happens to be that Malarkey outcompetes the competition's lines of shingles in EVERY single aspect like this man tried to highlight, then why is anyone using other manufacturers. I mean if Malarkey is better at literally every category, why would anyone buy other shingles? Lastly, in the disclaimer he says that he isn't sponsored by, paid, or endorsed by Malarkey yet I can guarantee they are getting special pricing from their distributor. On their website you can see they CLEARLY favor Malarkey. You can be sure that they have cobranded materials like polos, hoodies, etc.
