I saved this video ages ago just in case. Just in case arrived. I rewatched this video, made a list, went to the building supply store and fixed my roof. I’m female, approaching retirement age, lifelong desk job - and I repaired my own roof for $108. (I already had the shingles.) I am eternally grateful.

I run service for a roofing company. Mostly commercial flat roofs but I get shingle repair regularly. I also can cosign this work. Personally I prefer rp400 to seal the shingles as it's an asphalt product. Also, I strongly recommend the pac tools roof snake instead of a flatbar.

Wood working tip - At 21:00. First cut should have been downwards, perpendicular to grain of wood. Eliminates the risk of splitting the wood along the grain leading to moments of "That should not have happened" situation. It probably would have come to you if the second cut also split. :)

It's nice to see that not all 10+ year old roofs automatically need full replacement if there is damage anywhere. I appreciated seeing the full process of taking out the old shingle, replacing boards as needed, putting in ice/water, new shingles, and caulking.

Yeah they don't need to but for companies to make their money and to pay for their licenses you absolutely have to pay for a new roof because their minimum amount that they can work for is 3 to 5 Grand here's another Secret some companies higher independent skilled installers I need my label themselves as construction companies what sound more like insurance companies to me when you talk to them the guys they hire are sub contractors

This guy is good, and appreciate him sharing with others. Here's a tip he doesn't seem to know. Put your Sawzall blades in upside down. It makes it so the blade is much closer to the plain of the outside edge of the tool making plunge cuts much easier.

Dependng on how much the damage cost to repair, verses making an insurance claim and paying the deductable ($500 - $1,000)- might be better just paying out of pocket what the deductable would cost you anyways to pay for the job, and avoid insurance premium increases in the future because of making a claim! Because, if they pay now, they'll still get you later; like what happens when you go through the DRIVE-THRU!!!!

Thanks for sharing. I like your 1 Takes. I am knowledgeable about construction, windows, the path of water and how it travels, but I am still not sure about the roofing shingles, and the keyway, etc, I know you work your way up from bottom to top and lap backwards to prevent water infiltration. Lots to know. Keep up the good work. What would you charge to do a job like this? Have a great day.

I tried my best to tackle my own roof, had a lot of mistakes that made me have to have it redone. I learned a lot from my mistakes, and learning even more by watching these videos. Hiring your company was the best choice I'd made! Could maybe request a how to of the proper ways to start your shingles, 3 tab, and architecture to where you don't run into rain line (key line?) problems as you advance up the roof?

even ply decks have many gaps which basically a lot of roofers end up blowing nails threw or nails are there but have zero hold... when you hand nail you can easily adjust and just put in some extra nails or pull nail and hit higher and lower. the bottom line is,just because a roof looks good from the road it does not mean it was done without mistakes...

Have a straight wind that swept through and only took off about a dozen half shingles at different locations only over garage. The rest of the roof is fine. This application would be the answer to my roof damage. The wind tore them in halves right upper shingle level. I kept the torn shingles, they are still pliable, may just glue them back on, may be puzzle getting them back in existing location. You think just gluing them would work?
