Roofing is a tough business. Out of high school I went to work for a flooring installer as a helper and I never liked it. So a couple years in I said screw this, I’m going to find something else to do with my life. So I had this friend who was a roofer and he asked me if I wanted to come work for him on a Saturday to do a flat roof tear off to see if I might like the roofing business. Damn, I was never so sore in my life. Went back to humping rolls of carpet, and hauling buckets of glue and boxes of tile and never complained again. Got nothing but respect for roofers.

I was doing the siding gig, and a buddy of mine hired me on in the winter doing new construction painting... I lasted about 3 days. Much respect for painters.

The main reason people are not successful not just in roofing but in business overall is because people prefer elevators rather than ladders. It takes small steps to get to the top. When using an elevator and its given to you, you will never appreciate the hard work it takes to get and stay on top. People think everything is easy or think "they did it, I can do it". Hard work and dedication is what it takes.

I’m a homeowner prepping for a complete tear off with redesign / room addition. It’s hard to know who to trust and what the cost should be. Especially these days! You build confidence! Keep up the good work.

You are an Imagrant right. Well I Just had my roof replaced by a reputable company here and they have used a great Mexican team that did awesome work. You are doing the same thing as well. You sound like the owner of the company that did my roof. Independent roofers need to do other jobs to survive they all can't be owner's

Over charging…………a fair reasonable profit will make you a success and get you referrals. Cost of materials is such a small part of job. Pay your laborers and they will return.

I started my roofing company when I was 18 I’m now 21 and I’m right behind the bigger companies in Pittsburgh,PA I’m talking 4 to 5 different crews on different job sites every week I made my brothers quit their jobs to work with me because I’m so swamped with work I can’t see straight and it’s not like we are the cheapest bidders I get called “Expensive” quite a bit. In the long run the homeowner is glad that they have went with us in the end… thus making up for all the trash Craigslist roofers ruining their roofs. Long story short to become successful don’t be lazy and be on top of everything including taking care of the homeowners making sure they are fully satisfied!!

how did you get your license for roofing at 18? I'm just curious because I want to get into the business. I'm based in Florida and i have to either work as a roofer for 4 years or have a major in college. or have a 2-year degree and 2 years of experience.

Lol im 1 of those solo roofers with no team. I do it all on my own and live a pretty comfortable lifestyle, plenty of time to do other things too and it's enough for some, I'm happy get an easy to manage workflow. Plenty Of time with the family and we'll it works for me I guess.... but agreed to get bigger ya gotta start branching out.... as long as I'm not struggling and living a comfortable life..... I couldn't care less...I'm just in my second year now and live in middle of nowhere with no completion to stop me...., in fact, all the roofs in my area are rusty.....I just chip at them the community happy and my name spreading... I'm getting more work now infact this my best month so far..... I pulled in over 25k myself this month.... so I'm alright lol depends how far I want to take it, may get employees down the line

As a landlord I will hire owner-operators every day of the week over a "business owner". You can't trust employees making 20/hr to care about quality. They have no vested interest in the success of their business, their brand, their reputation. The business owners have no stake in the business itself, they are just looking to cut costs and margins and put out the lowest quality product that the customer will accept. These business owners are also just look to get bigger and bigger, they can't care about each job, they just want to grow. People who own their business and do the work are 100% better.

@@mr.g937 yep... hence y I don't want workers making muck ups lol I can only muck up my own job then it's my responsibility. I love working solo : ) and I just grab a hand as I need it. I put my best work in every job I do. Works for me lol besides....I do own my business and do all my work so what u mean?
