Hey so here we are taking a look at Phantom Breaker Omnia! This game is out as of today on basically all platforms so I figured why not take a look at it? It may not be a game with the budget like an NRS game for sure(although its not full price either! cheaper than normal), but I think for what is there, it has a lot of heart! So why not give a watch and see what the game is about!
@YukonJack2 жыл бұрын
Let me ask, is having a lot of heart enough to move it along and see it be more than a flash in the pan? I love mashing as much as the next guy but I love having some degree of motion inputs. DnF, Project L, and I'm sure others will have controls that are somewhat similar. Do you think no motion inputs are how most fighting games will end up being? Part of me feels it's inevitable but I also think it can be alienating when people have spent 20-30 years in the genre, to then have it simplified. I'm open to try anything and I'm in no means a purist, but some things feel like they shouldn't be totally overhauled.

For full transparency, I did receive an early copy of the game. However I am only posting this video today now the game is out to be full and in the clear of the embargo and any restrictions I had about talking about the game. I do think its pretty cool for what it is! Shame about the netcode though... :(
@S_Boomer982 жыл бұрын
I am actually having a lot of fun so far. While there are definitely some things even beyond gameplay that I find a little questionable, my overall feelings are quite positive. I am excited to get more deep into it. When it comes to online though, it looks like the game will just crash if there are disconnects. It hardly ever happened with me, but that doesn't make it less of an issue.
@phdbot44832 жыл бұрын
Hmm... I can't help but feel like I should give this game a chance even without the rollback netcode, since they said they couldn't afford to put it in, perhaps with enough support they could add it leter down the line or put it in their next game. The different "grooves" sound cool! I would have to figure out which character's right for me. I might start with Kurisu, but of course that's because I really loved Stein's Gate, lol!
@dyldragon12 жыл бұрын
I just got this vibe that this team is super small and they were almost sad that they couldn't implement rollback at that point. Even then, I also kinda get this vibe that they kinda aren't expecting this game to do too well. Even with rollback I don't think this game would be my thing at all, but I can't shake the feeling that this team really wants to just make a game people enjoy.
@GELTONZ2 жыл бұрын
For whatever it's worth, this is probably the best delay based netcode I've ever experienced. I can't even feel the delay against US and French players (playing from the mid-west) and the lag versus Japan is...tolerable? About the average DBFZ level? Friend of mine is clocking it at 7 frames of delay against Japan.

The game is awesome if I'm being honest. Gonna have a ton of fun playing this game for my channel. Only thing is I wish it had a proper netcode. The delay based crap is annoying. Im only upset there is no tutorial explaining all this or teaching basic combos. Ill wait for combo tutorials on youtube, but this game needs to implement these if this game wants to last. I also don't like how special moves are just a direction and A. I personally don't want fighting games to be made easier. I hope we get an advanced controls option. Online runs well, but im not sure how it is with varying connections. Im glad this wasnt a $60 game, but i feel like people are going to be turned off from it because there is no tutorial or a good explanation and tutorial of game mechanics. It definitely feels fun for the price, good amount of comboability at least in quick mode. As long as you can stomach having delay based netcode instead of rollback. And we will have to see how the matchmaking is if the lack of rollback keeps the player base smaller than what it could be. Haven't tried online yet but from what I've been hearing the frame input buffer online is palpable, so you can definitely feel the delay but have also been hearing it's pretty constant at least during a match. Maybe that's not too bad of a thing given the easy directional special inputs. Though large significant set delay doesn't work out for other games like Tekken so I'm skeptical but will definitely give it a chance. The price is fair but also might bring in a more casual crowd, which is great but probably means encountering more wifi connections which can be pretty painful without rollback. BTW a bigger benefit to quick mode than run speed is that you can combo after the dash normals for a shit ton more corner carry/juggles.

I'm honestly so glad I got this instead of Persona 4 Arena Ultimax. This game is just too much fun. It's a breath of fresh air after putting 145 Hours into Melty Blood Type Lumina. I Don't Think I would've gotten the same feeling of excitement and enjoyment if I got P4AU. I honestly see myself being a primary player for this and MBTL, and no other fighting game. An easy 9 or even 10/10 from me.

I have both and enjoy both, but Phantom Breaker feels much closer to Melty Blood than P4AU. P4AU is like a Jojo fighting game without Jojo characters. The Personas make for unique gameplay styles; if you were looking for a game that had diverse playtime either title should have checked that box.

@@BzaafiedTheFerocious Honestly speaking though, I feel like Phantom Breaker Omnia is actually a mix of Smash, Classic Melty Blood, Under Night In-Birth, and to an extent, Guilty Gear Strive. It just feels nice to play a game that has a different pace and different aesthetic after playing nothing but Melty Blood Type Lumina, which is a generally fast-paced game with no time to think at all. I can't quite put my finger on what, but there's something about the animations of the game that feel a little bit weird. I was hovering over it on steam considering adding it to the cart when you said it isn't rollback. It made the decision a lot easier
@Raxyz_02 жыл бұрын
Interpolated animation. A couple of keyframes with the movement smoothed out between them. It looks terrible on a fighting game, especially one with 2D sprites. The genre needs the anticipation and follow-through which aren't present in that method, and recent games have been going hard at it. Even indies like TFH. The visuals are functional but definitely on the "meh" side of things.

This game's average players per day on steam according to steamcharts: 7 That's crazy low considering that the launch of a game is most of the time the highest peak of players a fighting game will have. And netcode flatearthers still claim that rollback netcode doesn't contribute to sales. It might not be enough to keep a game alive but it is the thing that helps the most, the rest is up to the community.

The problem that I've noticed with this game is that the animations are very rough as well as the vanilla anime art style they applied to all of these characters. Something else that is strange is this odd batch of characters that look like the digitized 3d models rather than sprites. Gaito is the most noticeable example but it would seem that almost half the cast is sprites and the other half are these odd 3d models. Small point, I don't know how they managed to make a unique character design like Kurisu look so generic and bland. They even got the hair color wrong here. This game is a pass, but don't take that as small Fighting games can't be of good quality. That is simply not true, for example Rival of Aether is one of the best example of a small team doing a great job.

There was a full Q&A about it. They wanted to include rollback but couldn't afford it. "Omnia" is an update to a 10 year old game with equally old coding which wasn't compatible. To get rollback, they'd have to scrap what they had and rebuild everything from the ground up. So their options were to either release "PBO" without rollback or not release "PBO" at all. No need for the casual racism.
