A post on Reddit that was made a few months ago, a man with a steam deck was trying to get skylanders compatible with the hardware. Long story short, he got ahold of one of the original creators; and he handed him over code to get the steam deck rigged to play skylanders. It’s actually still on the subreddit, making it possible for anyone to do this

I had Disney Infinity and Lego Dimensions back when I was a kid and I loved it. Now I don’t have them, my mom got rid of both like months after. Could’ve saved em bc my little brother wants to re play those memories

They would've been much more appealing as toys if you could remove their stand. Like they click on and off. Then you don't have a big stand getting in the way and breaking the immersion.

I only tried Skylanders for a couple of hours at a friends house back in the day, but I worked at GameStop for the entire lifespan of the series. It was crazy how popular the first two games were. Especially when compared to everything that came after. I even had adults looking for specific Skylander figures for themselves, not just for their kids. I'd say the third title halved the series' popularity at the GameStop I was working at, and the following titles had far more shelf space than demand. I can see why they were phased out, but also it seems like a series that went too hard too fast and burnt all the good will that it got with the first title. I hope something like Skylanders comes along and blows people away again. It was a really fun time to work at GameStop.

Skylanders was the best game series I played as a kid! It was my childhood throughout my life! I did also play Disney Infinity as well, but it wasn’t my interest. Frankly I love all six Skylanders games because of their unique gimmicks! Sure, now that Toys for Bob has gone indie, and so much time has passed, I still enjoy Skylanders to this day! Plus, I have an idea on bringing it back!

My take was always too much too fast. Was hard to keep up with. The games were designed with planned obsolescence in mind. Like a Call of Duty game. And it just didn't work for the format I think if they switched to a free to play model with a game that got consistent updates. Something like Fortnite. It would still be a thing

Writer here! Surprisingly, they weren't an inspiration for skylanders (that I saw at least). But I admittedly should've noted their existence with at least a quick "while they weren't the first to do this, as UB Funkeys did, Skylanders was the first mainstream example of the genre" or something. Valid point though

Great video. I never got into Skylanders but i remember it being huge back in the day. The aspect of having to buy toys to enjoy a game turned me off personally.

Honestly it's stuff like this that makes me wish they brought the Skylander series back. The Toys to Life fad may be as good dead but they can still create a new game without it (though they probably find another way to monetize the hell out of it when they do decide to make one).

Toys to life crap shouldve stuck around, then NFTs maybe wouldnt be so prevalent. NFT's are essentially toys to life but done worse. As I recall, NFT's were SUPPOSED to be assets you could buy that you could use in other games. That idea failed miserably. Toys to life games like skylanders or nintendo games that used Amiibo, were exactly that, NFT games before we called them NFT's. And they were NFTs done right. A notable example is Webkins, a toys to life mmo game for kids.

If I may, Skylanders sums up what can go wrong with the American business ideologies. Rather than biding their time and generating slow but sustainatable growth, they explode at every new opportunity until they run out of steam, making big investments with the hopes of making big investments that, while exciting in the short-term, don't provide staying power when even one investment fails.
@bluegem858217 сағат бұрын
It also doesn’t help that after seeing the money they were making, other companies jumped in to take a bite of pie, just like with how so many games are now live service, and absolutely oversaturated, *maybe* they could’ve milked series a little bit more without, but the need for more and continuous profits meant was doomed regardless sadly
What made people lose interest in the series specifically wasn’t having to buy new toys but that the new toys weren’t worth buying. Trap Team and Superchargers didn’t have any new Skylander gimmicks and instead had players purchase separate non-character toys and was an obvious ploy to get customers to buy more uninteresting mass produced toys instead of creating new character gimmicks like Swap Force.

I got all the toys to life games and I loved them. I got a new PS3 a while back so I could play my ps3 games after years of letting them sit around. The first game I played was Skylanders Spyro’s adventure and it was more fun than I remembered. I’m actually about to quit these games that have season passes because they make you spend all your free time playing them to get stuff, especially if you only spend your money to open the full season pass. I’m done focusing my time on Disney Speedstorm, Multiverses, and Overwatch 2. I want to play my old games and new ones I got but haven’t played and I want to do something besides playing video games. Like I want to get back into creating characters and writing because I enjoy that. I’ll still play DST, Multiverses, and OW2 but I won’t let them consume my time anymore. Tomorrow I’ll start skylanders giants. Skylanders needs to make a comeback but not as a game, especially under Activision. The game era of skylanders is over. It’s been too long since Netflix cancelled the show so it can’t pick up where it left off. The only option is for Skylanders to get a movie franchise which is perfect because the world of Skylanders would make a hit in cinema and video game movies are because a major success thanks to Mario and Sonic. And for those of you who still have your figures and games, use them. Because I heard that the tech in the figures doesn’t last forever. So eventually all of our skylanders will become lifeless and we’ll never be able to play the games again. I wonder if we could sue Activision for that

Despite skylanders being the most expensive game to 100% it was still amazing in my eyes. Definitely did need a tone down and rework because a lot of it shouldn’t have been lost. If it was all playable in any part it would have been much better cause I would have loved playing as a giant in any and every game. And I’m still sad they removed PVP cause I wanted an imaginator battle with my brother (I had a earth ninja which is extremely OP)

I remember me and my family loving the original skylanders and playing it all the time on our family wii and we also loved giants but it kind fell off for us after swap force, I personally felt like it took away from thr identity of each character and it made them easier to loose in my experience, but the first 2 entry will always have a place in my heart, even if was one hell of a money making scheme

The way you were using the term "pay to play" is what would really be termed as "pay to win" as you need to get 1 of each element Skylander to beat the game. Pay to play on the other hand doesn't always get you everything a game has to offer. The best kind of example of this is free to download MMORPGS that can have a great experience when you first set out but the amount of shortcuts they usually have for gaining power fast is the pay to win aspect. Skylanders P2W was as I already said, needing 1 of each element. I'll happily pay £60+ for a complete game. Is there something wrong with that?
@drakath572711 сағат бұрын
My experience with the series was honestly kinda bland. I always enjoyed the initial playthroughs, but the post-game was way too empty for me to stick around. After a third empty post-game in Swap Force, I just lost interest altogether. I still have my Dark Spyro figure though, since its too cool to just let go of. It sits as the odd child among the small set of Amiibo I've slowly accumulated over the years and the NFC device.
