On a recent walk up there, I found an interesting flat stone which had three (old) long scratches (not cracks) across it. Like spokes on a wheel. Interestingly the most pronounced scratch aligns with the north edge of Winter Hill (Noon Hill a burial mound) and is in an exact E-W orientation. So, it aligns with the Equinox sunsets. It is at the summit of Top Of Pike.

Thanks again for more detailed content, I live fairly local it's great to know the history of remains on the moorland around Rochdale/Bacup/Todmorden. Keep it up.

Clive, I think the large stone you found could be a "jump" (is it called) like an intermediate station on the railway leading into the top of Cragg Quarry.......maybe

If you walk from Watergrove reservoir up the hill towards Walsden there is a group of spoil heaps just below the new wind farm. One of the heaps is the same red colour (29:40) as your find on Rooley Moor and can be seen on Google Earth. The reason is that many years ago some lads lit a fire to see if it would burn. It did.

Thanks Clive. Your a star, 100 mile drive into that clag on Rooly moor, no one else would ever dream of doing that in those conditions. I always look forward to your Videos with your hound. Keep em coming please. One of my distant relations toiled in Bagden Quarry. Do you know anything about how they got the rough slabs down to the polishing mill in the Dell ? I know there was a steam engine of some sorts from Bagden to the start of the descent into Healey Dell. But know nothing of the actual method used to transport the slabs to the polishing mill, apart from the raised trackbed down the hillside to the mill. Still clearly visible to this day. Thanks Brian Dearden, yep, another Dearden

@@briandearden7585 Thanks Brian. As far as I know it was a self acting incline down to the polishing mill, but I could be wrong. There might be something in the Bacupian quarries book at Rawtenstall library. Where the brake was situated must be very near the coal outcrop

What a great video Clive! It's really inspired me to mooch up there more and make note of some history before its lost to the future! Do you reckon one could take a metal detector up there? And Hamer or Hammer, depends how its spelt? ❤ miriam xx
@rossendalecollieries79952 ай бұрын
Its an easy walk from home Miriam, better in the Spring has to be said. You could spend days up there exploring, plenty of paths and old tracks. Dont know how you would go on with metal detector permission though...maybe a location for another walk...but no rain this time
