@@alisha3649 That doesn't have to be autotune. There's a million ways to make vocals sound in a specific way. In the example Roomie used, her voice literally just has reverb added to it and all reverb does, is to add an echo to the original recording. This is done because it's literally impossible to get a good recording in an echo chamber, since the echo will always enter the microphone in a non-perfect way. So to get the proper echo, you add reverb. Reverb and autotune are not the same. It's like pointing at a bass and say it's an acoustic guitar. Or call a Trombone a Trumpet. It's the perfect way to annoy the crap out of a musician as you can probably tell by this comment.

Perry Mason I’m not super good at production (and I definitely could be wrong) but I doubt that’s the reason. I think they usually speed it up without changing pitch. If not it would probably not align with 440 pitch at the new tempo. Just a theory though. Also it sounded way more compressed and had more high end mixed in in the recording.

Speeding it up does not raise the pitch... It USED to in the TAPE days, but digital recording is different... You can increase the tempo without altering the pitch. Download free Audacity software and play with your favorite songs. You'll see that you can increase the speed with the pitch affected, or chose to increase the TEMPO (beats per minute) which doesn't affect the pitch.

You can take a digital piano and assign the keys to play a completely different pitch or octave without affecting any of the note's attack, decay, or modulation speed. Digital sound is actually "data" and not "Sound". We all have some sort of modulation in our voices and if you were to change the speed of a vocal DRASTICALLY, that modulation, inaccuracy, or vibrato would sound a bit unnatural, but a few beats per minute isn't going to turn anyone's voice into Steven Hawking. I think the engineer was trying to protect the artist to some extent with that comment, but who knows. What's funny is that the guy doing this video keeps saying the pitch is higher, lower, and "Raised" in each version of Mike's song here. WTF? they are all in the exact same key... Even the slowed down Spotify version where it sounds like a female singing is sung in the same key.

4:50 I’ve been a musician (tenor saxophone) for almost 9 years and I usually have pretty good ear when it comes to things like this. Still, I could be wrong but from what i can tell, I’m like 80% sure that what you pointed out is not autotune. That sound is probably just vibrato; he often does that kind of vibrato in his songs. There probably is some auto tune but what you specifically pointed out is his style of vibrato(fast often inconsistent in his live performances;like this one)not auto tune.

Autotune is great to smooth out some unstable vocals, but unfortunately it doesn't translate over well with live versions.
