I mean this in the most caring and concerned sense possible; It sounds to me like she is projecting a human males personality upon roosters and is doing so from a perspective of someone dealing with unresolved past trauma. 🥺 Thank you for all your efforts to share all the wisdom you have gleaned! I know the videos are a huge struggle to produce on a regular basis but what you have done so far has helped tremendously! It was the gateway to me learning about your website so please (even if its on a monthly or quarterly basis) dont stop putting out new stuff and dont be afraid to recirculate the ones you made long ago because there are always fresh eyes looking for someone like you to steer them in the right direction!

I accidentally ended up with a rooster. (He's a teenager at the moment!). I just decided that I was not going to treat him any differently. He has such a personality. He often makes me laugh. He wing dances and struts all the time. I honestly have never seen him lower his head. He crows back when you call him name and when I pull in the driveway. I can hand feed him and he loves coming to stand next to me while I'm in the run. I'm really glad he ended up with us. It's been a wonderful learning experience. And I have never had chickens before. I've read and been told....”oh just wait, he's gonna turn on you and your kids are in danger." And if your new to chickens never get a rooster because they're a lot to handle and you have to know what your doing. I just couldn't believe it. Here I have this lovely, seemingly happy rooster, who loves his hens. I wondered what could possibly be so bad about that. He has alerted us to trouble that our hens have gotten themselves into and protected them. I wouldn't give that up for a second. Thanks for pointing out the crowing near you. I've always wondered what he was trying to telling me and figured I would go deaf trying to find out. Lol turns out it's exactly what I thought. 😁

Just purchased 20 acres in Idaho for our retirement and have been doing research on keeping chickens. I have to tell you, you give some of the best, down-to-earth information on chickens on the internet. I was amazed by the amount of advice that is out there given by supposed experts who use nothing but speculative claims to back their reasoning. As someone who teaches the occasion logic class, I very much appreciate that you back all your advice with sound reasoning. The other thing I really have enjoyed about your videos is that you obviously love your fowl but you have not fallen prey to the issue of trying to apply humanity to them. They are not people, they are chickens. They have their own behaviors and their own needs. I would assume that, just like dogs, they are going to be happiest when you try to understand their behaviors and needs and don't try to anthropomorphize them. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge.

When we got a straight run of chicks, the plan was to get rid of all roosters. But the guys are so loving, we ended building more housing so they could stay. They are just so cute, and they dance for us and crow and just feel content on our laps. They have convinced me that roosters are not evil ❤ Just like dogs, it all depends on the owners 🐓🐓🐓🐓

Wish I could have a roo. I love how they take care of the hens. The neighbors called the city and my next door neighbor was forced to get rid of hers. So sad. He took care of the flock and even the ducks were protected.

Thank you for the videos Bri! I thought roosters were dangerous. My friend who has had chickens and is intelligent and well educated led me to this belief. Also, he is a rabid animal lover. I got the impression from him if a rooster even saw me he would attack me with his “spurs”. Thank you for clearing this up and I forwarded your video to him.

Thank you so very much for posting this video. Unfortunately roosters have had a bad card dealt to them for many years, old farmers kept on spreading their tails based on the "experience " they and their fathers and grandfathers had which not necessarily were right since they didn't always work. I have had mixed experience with roosters in my 11 years of keeping chickens. This year I'm getting a rooster in my chick order and thanks to you, I will be paying more attention to him and dedicate more time understanding what he does and hopefully I will have an enjoyable rooster because the truth of the matter is, they are gorgeous creatures

We ended up with 7 Roos and 7 hens from a straight run. We originally planned to process all of the Roos but we fell in love with one of the subordinate Roos and he is a doll- he is sweet to the girls and is fairly quiet he is friendly and he takes guard duty seriously

really thankful for you sharing your research and knowledge based in science and through personal experience, of your own and through similar people out there who know what they are doing. BTW the insights on how to help work with and train roosters is wonderful and what we needed to utilize an organized approach with our young, protective rooster,Johnny! Your website and blog are the greatest resource I’ve found. We have always had knowledge and understanding around our rescues on our farm, including dogs, cats, even horses, yet we really knew nothing about chickens,

My rooster just came of age and found his crow yesterday. Started neck pulling today. He is my first rooster. He does dance and circle me in the yard . At first I thought it was aggressive. If I reach at him he will peck. I have him hop on a chair then he will let me touch him. What seemed to be aggressive now seems to be he is happy to see me. Im still on alert. At bed time in the house he will let me pet and hold him. So his outside instincts to protect are on high alert I guess. I'm trying to not show fear and I did think the same thing that I am going to try to train him like a dog. It seems to be going well. This new behavior just started and your video was very helpful!
@thefeatherbrain2 жыл бұрын
You may have to work with him on not pecking you when you reach out, or he may outgrow it on his own. They can be a bit feisty that first year. I had a rescued rooster who did that a lot to me and I would put an oven mitt on one hand, so if he pecked, it didn't hurt and I wouldn't react at all when he pecked. I'd just keep my hand right where it was. If the peck hurts and you have a strong reaction, that encourages further unwanted behavior. I would keep reaching my hand slowly towards my rooster and talking to him in a calm sweet voice. I never let his behavior phase me. He pretty quickly would start to lose interest in pecking hard when he didn't get the reaction. And as soon as I saw him hesitate to peck, I would bring my other hand up with feed in it. So it redirected his attention to the feed before he could peck me and he'd eat the feed instead. I'd do that each day a few times until he stopped pecking my oven mitt hand altogether. Then I put on a thinner glove. Then finally, my bare hand. Worth a try. I'm not sure if you saw this video, but I think it's really helpful for understanding the "mean" behaviors of young roosters - kzbin.info/www/bejne/a4Krf36VYt1-qtk

I can’t thank you enough for all this information! I just recently got a pet rooster (we basically had to remove him from the main flock because he was injured by another rooster and now he’s our little companion). I was trying to find more information on their behavior to understand him better and develop a trusting relationship, but by watching your video I realized how much I was misinformed and could have hurt my little buddy… Thanks for sharing your knowledge! I’ll definitely subscribe and watch all your content so I can be a better person to my little roo!

I love my Roo and had a previous one that was wonderful too, Barr would groom me like they groom each other. Ragnar the Roo my current Roo, will call every time I come out of the house day or night. He will continue you this until I talk to him, and sometimes I have to go see him. I tell him what a beautiful Roo he is. If I'm doing something and he can hop on me he will, just like my hens he will do a purring cluck and just want loving. He is a sweet boy,. I have seen him go after a couple of the girls, when they don't want to deal with him they will put him in his place. He is wonderful and full of personality and joy like all my other chickens. He will taste me ( lack of better word), with his tounge at times, only tried to pecked aggressively once. I literally looked at him and asked him, what do you think your doing? So people think I'm nuts but I have always talked to all my animals, they understand me better than I understand them. I treat them with kindness, love, and respect. They do the same to me as well, sometimes we have a misunderstanding , once we figure out what the other needs, life is good. My Roo like my hens, when I have a migraine will come up and do the purring cluck and snuggle into me and try to make me feel better. I may be humanizing my chickens but, we are happy and have good joyful relationships.

So I just got chickens for the first time ever. I am very new at this world. I bought 2 chics, then I was given a chic which turned out to be a rooster. He will dance sideways toward me, but then he will jump and peck at me and my grandkids. I want him to feel comfortable and happy, but I can't catch him. How can I work with him to make him feel safe? Any advice is appreciated. Thank you for all your knowledge.
