Hey guys, 07:20 they talk about GPS satellites. I actually work with GPS, so just wanted to share some stuff about the clocks The clocks used are Atomic clocks, Mainly Rubidium and Cesium, In the later models its primarily Rubidium. The clocks are indeed off of absolute time.. but this margin is mere nanoseconds. That nanosecond is still enough to throw your location off. Its a lot more complicated than these two sentences, but I hear the GPS time thing frequently. And I get the feeling it freaks some people out a little bit. :)
@publius1016 жыл бұрын
is this just an effect of them going fast for a long period of time like they speculated? if so why isn't it accounted for? it's a trivial special relativity calculation..
@Bill-zp2mt6 жыл бұрын
I always thought of time and space as a fabric, so it's the gravity that effected the time, and not the speed which the satellites traveled at. So the satellites are less affected by the gravity on earth, because they are father away from earth than us.
@Bill-zp2mt6 жыл бұрын
For the speed to have an effect on time you have to travel at or close to the speed of light. My hypothesis are just from my bad memory, so I might be wrong.
@publius1016 жыл бұрын
they are two different effects - speed affects time through special relativity, gravity affects it through general relativity. both are very small for satellites - the first because they are travelling slow relative to the speed of light, like you said, the second because Earth has very weak gravity. however i know that the gravitational time dilation is big enough that GPS satellites have to account for it, so it's curious that the speed time dilation isn't factored in (if that is indeed the case) - naively i'd expect the SR effect to be bigger than GR, but i haven't done the calculation, obviously.

I believe that their position on the Uber issue was that they didn’t agree with the restrictions that the state of Texas was putting on Uber, and they liked Uber as an alternative to normal cabs. BUT they thought Uber up and leaving screwed their drivers. Honestly who cares though, as long as they still like the service provided, what’s the problem with keeping them as a sponsor.

MasterCrander The reason it never was an issue is that there was never a problem with the groups' fuel supply, the Republic planets were always providing them with whatever they needed, In this the rebels are literally on their last legs and they do not have that support. Now they don't have those supplies so of course they're gonna run out. It isn't like they have infinite power.

Bothered immediately by the light speed conversation and wanted to point out that in Star Wars (the old cannon at least) "hyperspace" was a separate dimension with altered physics which let them slip through space with no loss of time over distance. Force Awakens may have retconned that with the "lighspeed approach" to starkiller base. It made more sense the original way though, it also meant that hyperspace wraith entities were real... and they were both terrifying and awesome.
@CrazyGamer9966 жыл бұрын
well i don't think they retconned it, it still works that way, the thing is you need a certain distance to get up to speed and slow down, thats why nobody ever enters hyperspace when there is something in front of it they always look for an opening to enter it. The starkiller scene was there to show that Han was soo good that he could guess the time to jump out of hyperspace and not crash.....well sorta not crash.
@TheParadoxG6 жыл бұрын
Nurarihyon the hyperspace theory works more along the lines of exit and enter, not speed up break through and slow down to exit. Old cannon states that interplanetary travel really only began when the tech to exit relative space was discovered, though it was never truly understood. The problem they had had before was that they hadn't been able to produce materials strong enough to hold up to the amount of speed necessary to hop planets in a reasonable time frame. Ftl has always had problems with relative time because it was a matter of speed. Hyperspace glosses over that because it's more like "wormhole" travel.
@CrazyGamer9966 жыл бұрын
well I stand corrected, tho im still a bit confused since Han in the original trilogy says that you could run into a planet or a star

I'll be so happy if they do do a move to the middle type thing with the force. Because both the light side and dark side have their drawbacks. It's the Jedi's issue with love that leads Anakin down the dark side, it's the dark side's disdain for love that eventually causes a "that's too much" moment when Anakin chooses between the Emperor and his son, but somewhere in the middle there's a non-extremist view where you can love and have family but sometimes sacrifices must be made, that kinda thing.

Personally I felt Luke had an interesting arc, and if they treated him like a Yoda character everything with Rey would be really boring because it would've been a RE-hash of Empire Strikes Back.
