A root canal has to be performed if the dental nerve (Latin: Pulpa) has died and/or is infected. The objective of a root canal is to completely remove the destroyed tissue (which may also be infected with bacteria in some cases) from the interior of the tooth, so that the infection is prevented from spreading to the bone.

xX Angel While you're getting it, they'll give you 2-4 shots on the side where your getting the procedure done. It won't hurt if you have more of the shots, but after you have the root canal done, about a day or two later it will hurt just a little bit

Just had a root canal yesterday and it wasn't as bad as people make it out to be. My dentist is awesome - the freezing needle didn't even hurt, and he stopped to give me more freezing when I needed it! The pain afterwards was minimal - honestly, the pain leading UP to a root canal is 100 times worse :S I'm so glad I can eat properly again! If you need one done, GET IT DONE! It'll save you so much pain and stress and the cost of it (even without insurance) is definitely worth it!

It doesn't cost more than a few hundred dollars (here in Canada anyway), and your insurance should cover most of the cost. Mine was only about $300. Pricey, yes, but worth it!

Had my root canal treatment at the local dental centre. Prior to the treatment, I was very scared of how painful the treatment sounds like. I was amazed that it was painless during and even after the treatment. Trust me.

+chloe smith it's not that bad. It may hurt a bit at the start but when the anaesthesia takes over, it won't hurt anymore. Depends on how your body reacts to it. You should feel numb afterwards. Tell your dentist if it still hurts. He'll be more than happy to administer another shot.

Its only painful if your dentist uses weak cheap needles or your gum/tooth is swollen then even 3 needles won't work. I suggest waiting for the swelling to go away or doing it before it gets swollen.

Everybody has different experiences about their root canal procedure so I'll discuss mine for those who may be interested. I had to get one done on my upper right 3rd molar. The first thing the dentist did to me was inject a local anesthetic into my gums and after 5 minutes the right side of my face went numb. Next with my mouth wide open fully conscious of what's going on he drills into the tooth (this DOES NOT hurt at all, but you are fully aware of what's happening). Then he scrapes inside the tooth the clean the canal again you're aware of this happening, but CAN'T FEEL anything. After he inserts a filling and it's done. Although now I have to eat food on the other side of my mouth and then I have to go back in a couple of weeks to get a crown installed. But my main point is for me there was absolutely no pain.

Jessica Soriano no, luckily for me when my tooth collapsed it avoided exposing the nerve so there was no pain, but like I said before everyone is different just because you feel no pain, doesn't mean you shouldn't get your teeth checked just to be safe

Princesa K you could ask the dentist, but I don't think they put you to sleep for a root canal probably for safety reasons. Like I mentioned before they do give you Novocain which numbs the tooth they're working on

I had root canal today and it's really not that bad. As long as you have the anaesthetic you won't feel any pain what so ever. You literally just have to sit there for 45 minutes with your mouth open. You might feel a little pain after it but that's normal. People make root canal out to be a massive thing but it's really not so don't worry.

I just had route canal only an hour ago. This video is very informative and thanks. Honestly the only pain I felt throughout was having the second needle and that was for a second. Really I was in agony before and now recovering under a duvet.

that was because of infection. if it weren't for the infection then you wouldn't need the second shot. anesthetics have hard time getting through infections so alot of the time they'll give you another shot right in the tooth down the canal. this is what I always opt for Reguardless.

I just had my root canal last 3 days ago. The procedure is fine. It didn't hurt me when he did the 1st canal of my tooth, but the 2nd part I felt the pain. The dentist has to put anesthesia so he can proceed. I didn't feel pain after it finished but when the anesthesia slowly going away, I can start feeling the pain. And it's horrible! The dentist told me that It'll gonna hurt after the root canal procedure and yeah he was right. It hurts when I talk and when I eat. The tooth is so sensitive if its hits by a food or your neighbor tooth when you talk. It's so painful and I have to bare it for less than 2 weeks but he said it'll go away. The reason I had this is not because of the cavities, it's the impacted tooth that damaged the neighbor tooth. Until now it hurts. I'm only taking pain killers.

Yes, I had. The 1st session was to put medicine in root canal procedure and that was a horrible pain after the anesthesia went away. Then I had my 2nd session in root canal last week for the filling. I came back when there's no pain anymore. The dentist did put that long needle again but this time it's not painful during the process and no anesthesia injected in my gums, probably because the nerve is dead so I don't feel any pain. But he told me after the root canal procedure I will feel the pain again after 2 days and he said it's normal. Just take pain killers he said. But this time the pain is bearable and not worst like the 1st procedure. It lasts maybe 5 days. I don't feel any pain in my tooth now. Next week I'll comeback for the last procedure. He will put a crown on my tooth to cover it. Then it's finished.

I had the second session with my dentist yesterday. He put the root fillings at that time. My experience, which is very close (also I live in Egypt, our equipment isn't the best) My dentist put a local anesthetic on the part by a cotton where I was going to be injected by the stronger anesthesia The first time he did that, I was scared that it was going to hurt but surprisingly nothing did, I actually almost fell asleep in the chair. The first session, he cleaned the decay from my tooth with a small drill that spat water (don't know its name lol) He put temporary fillings afterwards (it took about an hour for the whole thing to finish, before he started, he waited till the top of my chin was numb) He said there might be pain the first night. Didn't happen. It only hurt on the second day and on the third day (the day for the second session) I was screaming for my mother because I couldn't even touch my tooth for some reason. Second session is when things got a bit weird. I told him about the pain, he said there can be an infection that is causing my jaw to hurt. He said he was going to clean a bit more, The thing is, he removed the crown of my tooth. Why? My tooth's height is now half it's corresponding on the other side. Odd. (all of this was under anesthesia, btw.) The only thing that hurt was when he got something like a needle (it was shaped like a root) and started digging around with, but the pain was almost none existent, it was like a needle touching you every once and a while. Sometime after He used the root drill, and got out a device that had a root needle (a hook was inside my mouth (cheek, lips, inside mouth- if that makes sense) and the needle was in my tooth) to measure the length of my root, so he could drill it and shape it to insert the root fillings, he did all of that without so much pain. But the pain came for me when the anesthesia started to leave, I was suddenly crying, and screaming for my mum to help me with something. The pain killers helped a bit, but it took a while and the pain was honestly unbelievable. I have no idea why it hurt so much, he said it might hurt a bit on the first night and to take pain killers but my jaw started to get swallowed, is this really normal? (sorry for my bad English, hope I helped in anything or that you can answer my questions)

it's not bad really. just time consuming. it sounds bad but I always opt for an additional shot right in the canal once they get in there. that way there's no risk of feeling any pain. typically you shouldn't anyways if there's no bad infection. good luck. 3 myself.

Depends on the tooth location and how skilled your dentist is. I had two root canals done by two different dentists this week, one in a bottom right molar and one in my front upper tooth. The front one, which I imagined would be more painful, was COMPLETELY painless! I literally did not feel a thing. For the bottom molar though, I felt two really stinging shots. It was like my brain got zapped but it's very brief, it lasts about one second then goes away. It's well worth it though!

I just had a root canal 10 minutes ago. It was a long visit, over two hours! Sadly the dentist couldn't finish it in one appointment and I have to go back in two and a half weeks. It’s interesting to note that necrosis can stem from dental visits too. Abscesses resulting from this condition can be fatal thus you need to be careful in choosing your dentist.

I had terrible toothache, affecting my entire right jaw. The pain was excruiating. By the time I went to the dentist, an abscess had already formed. The dentist then drilled out all the pulp and the roots, filled my tooth up with antibiotics and put in a temporary filling. I went back today and they removed the temporary filling. The worst part of the entire procedure was the injection and even that just felt like a tiny prick. Not once did I really feel any pain. Maybe just some pressure from all the drilling. In fact the corner of my mouth actually hurt the most as it split from having my jaw open for so long. They again filled all the canals today and put on a temporary filling. On Monday, they will put in a final filling. I didnt even realise i was having root canal, it was only afterwards when i asked the dentist what the procedure was. Glad I didnt know. If i had watched this video - I would have been seriously scared and nervous. However there is nothing to be worried about. Once you have the injection - everything is numb. I am just experiencing slight discomfort now but the dentist did tell me that was normal. Good Luck to all of those of you having root canal.

Every second is my left side being in a terrible pain. Sleeping is so hard, I had less than 5 hours of sleep last night. I just wish I could get the treatment done today.

Don't be nervous. I had a root canal done today and it wasn't bad at all. My worst fear is the numbing and i told my dentist and for my comfort, he put numbing gel over the area first, then he put two drops of the numbing shot in my slightly numb gums. After that he put the rest in and I barely felt a thing. And if you are worried about after pain, take some Advil while you are still numb so if there is any pain, you won't feel it. Good luck!

So ! Today was the big day but shockingly I didn't get my root canal. My dentist suggested we do a indirect pulp cap due to me being so young. I'm 16 ( I would say it's like a pre root canal) but luckily I didn't feel a thing. The local anesthetic he gave me were WONDERFUL and the after pain wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. My advice for after pain would to just take something as soon as you feel the numbness going away. Other than that everything went well.

From my experience yesterday without anesthetic: The pain from medication injected into the very bottom of the tooth (bottom of root canal) > The pain from drilling through nerve (through the root canals - my tooth had 3 holes, so 3x drilling). - The drilling pain is durable. - But once i got that medication injected, to disinfect the possible leftover debris and other bacteria...and pushed/compressed it down to the very bottom (well it was the upper tooth_)...that pain is equal/identical to the strong tooth-pain, the one that prevents you from sleeping at nights. The common painkillers help with that though, and she (the dentist) said the pain should last for about a day or 2 and then it should be fine. Hopefully :)

The reason people say the pain is terrible is because A lot of the time people get the root canal done while there's a killer infection. I am currently 18 and the first time I got one done I was 12 and it was one of the most dreadful experiences I have had. Little did I know the procedure was done while I was in intense pain from the inflammation in the tooth. Last week I started to have intense pain. I had a tooth that was very sensitive and the cavity went to deep. I went in while crying and I was told I need a root canal. In that moment I flipped out cuz he wanted to do it right then and there while I was in pain. The nurse came and quietly told my dad that I should first take some antibiotics to calm down the infection and come back next week. The first two days in taking the antibiotics I was still in pain But with some pain medication I held it. The day I was to get the root canal i could only think about how painful it was going to be because of my previous experience with it. HERE IT IS: NO PAIN. I was one of the best dental moments I have had and I felt nothing while it was being done. He first numbed through the left and right side of my gums and then worked till the end. I was so satisfied and this is one day later and I haven't felt anything yet. Don't be afraid to know your options a lot of times dentists won't tell you you can take antibiotics (like my previous doctor who did the first root canal).

Aaliyah E​​ I had been on them for about two weeks prior and it still didn't complelty clear the infection. One thing I always opt for is having an additional shot right in the cannal. I ask my dentist eyerytime now as soon as he can see the cannals to just go ahead and give me and extra shot in the cannals for insurance. It might hurt for a very split second but it's MUCH better than having your dentist start digging away to end up in excruciating pain. Thats if you weren't at all numb to begin with. It can vary. Then you'll possibly have to have that shot anyways so I just get it done and over with from the start.

To anyone who is scared/nervous. Everyone always bangs on about how painful/horrible it is. It's really not as bad as the pain you go through with the actual cause of having to get one (a dead/infected tooth) fuck me that shit hurts! Up all night screaming in pain, and the agony if something taps it OMG, and my lip even ballooned out. I've had this procedure 3 times on 3 of my front teeth where there is no cushion and just bone. The injections really hurt, that's about it. I could feel a lot of pushing and pressure, but they remove the nerve when they drain the infection so you really don't feel much at all. It is just uncomfortable and can be hard to hold your mouth open for 40 minutes, you can have your mouth viced though which is better. Getting this treatment is SO worth it if you're in a lot of pain with toothache, trust me I've been through it 3 times in the worst possible teeth to get it done so relax, be brave and face it. Nothing is as bad as that horrible dull ache from a dead tooth. You will be out of pain and happy again when it's over. I also had all of this before turning 18 so got 3 shiny white crowns over them for free =D

because general anesthesia may have various complications, is not recommended to have a lot of them during your lifetime as it poses brain and other functions threat and should only be done in cases where local anesthesia would not be effective, every person reacts differently and doctors will avoid putting you to sleep for minor interventions

hoda ahmad if your dentist said its a maybe then nothing can stop it. Flossing is great but wont stop a root from dying which then gets infected and creates an abscess. If it gets to that point you need antibiotics. Youll feel pressure maybe pain and if you let it go it will infect the bone and become septic. That will cause blood infection and death. Death. Go get an xray and cold cotton test in one month to check on the root. Watch out for pressure and puss. Root canals are easy to sit thru. Easier than a two surface filling. Thirty secs of drilling and the rest is quiet and the whole thing is pain free. The next day youll feel a bit sore because of holding your jaw open and stuff but thats normal. Take care and let me know how it goes. I used to be terrified of dentistry cos of a bad dentist when i got my first cavity at age 29. I skipped the dentist for some time but then a filling cracked and i needed a root canal so i got over my fear with a better dentist. I like the dentist now cuz he listens to me and checks that Im very numb and comfortable.

I had this done two years ago, they don't remove the nerve, they kill the nerve so that it doesn't hurt you anymore. The only thing that hurt was when they have to numb you. I still felt everything else but it didn't hurt. Root canals happen for different reasons. For mine it showed up 11 years later due to traumatizing the nerve 11 years earlier at an incident. Its all good now though.

I got a root canal today (I'm 12 years old and the cavity had been left untreated for a rather long time). If you're getting a root canal for the first time and were wondering, no, it does not hurt as long as you are numbed properly. It's the aftermath that hurts the most, or after the medicine wears off. I WAS LITERALLY SCREAMING IN THE CAR, but take a few pain relievers and you'll be fine.

I've just gone through the second of three root canal sessions....it did hurt as one of the canals would not respond completely to the Novocain. It was intense but for only a few secs...but it is not a completely painless procedure for all. Helps to be completely relaxed! Ciao!

Just got it done. Was absolutely painless only the injection in the v.beginning gave a bit of pain.Other than that absolutely painless. ive had root canal when i was 11 yrs old. yes, it does hurts when it's only your first day (not rlly, it depends on you) but dont worry they have anesthesia. i felt really numb after the treatment. my root canal treatment was 8-11 months long (it depends on your teeth). then, you have to go back to the dentist twice or once a month. so yea... i had 8-11 months of torturing 😂😭. but in the last day, its not that painful anymore. it will just take some time, you'll get used to it :)

Other than the pricks of the needle and the occasional discomfort of holding one’s mouth open for a long time, a root canal is not bad. I had one today and all I felt was a little sensitivity in spots during the procedure. That was it, no pain, so go ahead, get one👍😊

The pain of the procedure its self is not so bad, just the before and after period. Last time, the infection was pretty high up, I was on mixed (prescript strength) ibuprofen and hydrocodone- relived pain for about 2 hours. It was bad, point of waking up for pain bad.

I had an Absence from my incisor because of a chip tooth. It was the most painful thing ever! My whole left side of my face was swollen! Just had my root canal a few days ago, was the weirdest thing looking at needles go into your tooth. Didnt see it but I felt it lol. Wasnt painful because of the numbing but I didn't feel them creeping in there.

I had a root canal yesterday and it wasn't' painful at all. I had a good dentist that took her time and numbed me up very well. She applied a topical gel on my gums then gave me the anesthesia so I hardly felt any pain. Afterwards I took Ibuprofen to help with the swelling and mouth stress. That's it. Do thorough research to find a good dental office Don't be afraid people!! :)

The only pain I felt was from the injection and sometimes he would hit the gums with some tools (this has nothing to do with the root canal, he was also rebuilding a tooth).

UPDATE: Just to update everyone about my root canal. I only went as far as the first stage. Pain returned only after about a week which my dentist found to be strange. By that stage I'd already spent a lot on this one tooth. She sent me to see an endodontic specialist to conduct an assessment of if it is worth proceeding into stage 2 root canal, as she suspected my problem was a gum problem and not a nerve problem. After seeing the specialist, he ruled out my gum as the problem and said it was one of two things: hairline crack to the tooth or a nerve problem. However that over 50% bone loss had occurred and the prognosis for support of the tooth going forwards wasn't great. Instead of spending more and more money on a tooth that was most likely cracked, I decided the best course of action was to remove it. I removed it 3 days ago. It's gone. I'm still reeling from the post-op pain and the myriad pain killers but at least I know that problem is gone. No longer will it cost me money. For anyone out there, it is worth asking your dentist for the medium to long term prognosis. It may save you some $$$$.

Had my first ever one recently. Don't worry about it, its just kindov invasive around the mouth but its fine. Quite a long procedure tho, at the end you will start to feel alittle discomfort and/or mild pain which will last for a day or so, or it did for me at least.

Just found out today I need 2 root canals on my two upper front teeth, after a week of unbearable pain in one of them. Oragel, ibuprofen and tylenol, and peroxide rinses and I still feel it. I've woken up once or twice every single night the second it would all wear off. I can't smile, or laugh, or wiggle my nose or touch my cheek without pain. God forbid eat. I'm on antibiotics, and this is the first day I haven't really NEEDED to take any pain meds.. but it still hurts bad enough. I'm READY. The first part of my surgery is the 20th. It can't be any worse than my wisdom teeth experience, so I'm not even scared.

Guess my dentist was just terrible then. My dentist pressed this tool on my nerve, or what felt like it, it felt like I'd literally been struck by lightening and my body, by reflex, flung itself out of the chair. It was a reaction to immense and SEVERE pain, the dentist looked frustrated at me for something SHE had done. I've never gone back and now fear the dentist to the EXTREME. It was that painful. Be careful that you're numbed properly because if you're not it fucking REALLY HURTS.

Tommy Tucker You can't harden a nerve. Have you ever taken skin from your hand in an accident and then ran it accidentally under hot water? It hurts the way it does because the nerves are closer to the surface than they should be. In a tooth it's a naked nerve, exposed. So if anything, and I mean anything, touches it, even wind, it's magnified by 1000*. Now imagine someone prodding that with a sharp stick.... Believe me, its hurts! I've crushed my hand, had a slipped disc and dislocated my shoulder, NONE of those comes close to the level of pain of that one second. It's what I'd describe as pure pain.

I didn't feel a thing until the anesthesia had started to wear off in the middle of the operation. All 4 of my root canal is completed; when the anesthesia had completely gone worn off; there was absolutely no pain-after affect, but I am still being put on antibiotics.

+JakoShak I had one done back in April and I was having really bad Anxiety, crying saying I wanted to go home so the dentist offered to put me on laughing gas and it was the best thing they did, I also obviously had freezing. Either way if you get laughing gas or anesthesia you will be fine and feel nothing. I was so relieved after I had it done no more pain at all and for the whole hour and a half I was there felt like 10 minutes. It might be different for you depending on circumstances but from my experience you have nothing to be worried about (:

I had to pee. Lol. My dentist is very observant. She noticed I was starting to get uncomfortable (I was going to try to hold it). She asked if i was in pain but I shook my head no, but tried to tell her I needed to pee. I couldn't talk so I grabbed my phone and typed restroom. She giggled and said sure. Threw some gauze in to prevent salvia from touching my tooth and let me up. No issue. The whole procedure took about 3-4 hours because I also had a cavity filled next to it.

If your tooth is infected get it EXTRACTED, it is near impossible to remove all bacteria with root canal. Your health is at risk if you get a root canal, do your research.

***** I recommend getting a second opinion from a holistic dentist, he/she should provide you with the safest, longest lasting solution to your problem. If your tooth is loose and pretty painful, then it may be too far gone and need extracted.

I had root canal last year. It was the worst experience of my life. I had a front tooth with a filling that had became infected. It started with toothache in school that the school nurses wouldn't help at all with. That went to a small abscess, that within a day covered half of my face with swelling and threatened to make me blind. I had emergency root canal and because of where the abscess was the needles felt like white hot rods going up from my gum to my nose. Because of the severity, in my multiple visits I had in total 14 of the injections in a few days. The procedure was fine, but the rest scarred me for life. Have a normal 2 fillings at the end of the month planned . 😅😰

Well it took a hour and a half I wanted to use the gas but insurance didn't cover so I got I believe it was 4 shots to the mouth one at roof of mouth everything went fine no pain at all during and after just no pain all together and afterwards my mom got a real kick out of of it when she told me to smile my my left side would smile and my right side pretty much just sagged I was even able to eat after the root canal since the dentist place was near red lobster so my point is it was complety painless and the numbness wore of in like 4 hours.

Why the heck would any one choose to get their tooth pulled over a root canal? I've had both done, many root canals and 1 tooth pulled I didn't need (very back left top molar), and the tooth that got pulled bled like a gusher for 18 hours straight, and maybe 3 days total. To this day my gum there never fully healed up, but close enough. Anyone that wants a tooth pulled and then get an implant is CRAZY imo. Who wants a metal tooth IMPLANTED in their gum? That can cause major issues anytime down the road. And implants are like $4K vs like $1.5K for a r.c. Keep your teeth kids, and adults. Get the root canal if it's a choice.

But a dentist willing to hold off and give different options is prob a good dentist to have. A lot of dentists are money hungry assholes, and they will rip your teeth apart for all the $ they can. I had this done today. The treatment itself wasn't that painful. After my dentist sealed the tooth up, it hurts like HELL. It hurts like you broke your leg and you are constantly standing on the leg. This feeling was gone in about 1 hour. and it was all good Now, I don't want to scare you or anything. My dentist told me that it depends on the person how much pain they'll experience after the treatment. My mom had this done and didn't feel anything after. So as I said, it depends on the person.
