I saw someone use a paper clip, bend it into an S shape and then use that to hold a vine onto a pole. It looked very nice because you didn’t even really see it.

Huge amount of knowledge in this video. Inspired by your videos I’m starting to venture into the world of propagation and I have a couple underway. My first attempt was a pencil cactus (I think that’s what it is anyway) and it is doing very well. I plan on giving it to a friend’s young daughter who likes plants. Thanks for another excellent video. One question, do you dress up as a Monstera for Halloween? Lol.

I see you use a slow release fertilizer when potting, how often do you ‘top it off’ with more slow release fertilizer after that? Thanks Melissa! Love your videos, and I’m learning lots. Your voice is so comforting it feels like I’m hanging there with a good friend 🙃
@plantsbymelissa
@plantsbymelissa Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! ☺️ I’ve only been using slow release for a few months now so I haven’t had to add more back in for most of them yet. I’ve repotted a few since and I added a little more to the mix when I did that. I’m not one to really use exact measurements lol so I just toss a little in there. As long as the plants seem to be growing well then I use that as my judgement. I’m still learning with fertilizer though. I technically used a plant food for almost 2 years before this which isn’t the same and I think my plants have had a noticeable difference in growth for me 😊

Why do you use orchid pots for all of your plants? Can you please explain? Thanks!
@plantsbymelissa
@plantsbymelissa Жыл бұрын
I don't use them for all my plants - mostly just my moss pole plants and my anthuriums. I prefer a really aerated mix for those plants and I need pots with a lot of drainage. Most anthuriums are epiphytes so they attach their roots to trees in nature so the mix is mostly perlite and bark. You can very easy overwater moss poles if the mix isn't airy enough and cause root rot :)

Question: why do you set your poles up in the center of the pot instead of along the edge to give the plant more room?
@plantsbymelissa
@plantsbymelissa Жыл бұрын
I set my wire poles up in the center for stability if the pole. I haven’t used these plastic ones for very long at all so I’ll have to see how they do for me. The roots grow around the pole in the pot 😊

Since the root systems are right up against the pole base, how do you water the poles frequently enough to keep them moist without over watering the roots?
@plantsbymelissa
@plantsbymelissa Жыл бұрын
I don’t have to worry too much about keeping the moss too moist. My poles usually dry out, I have lots of other moss poles and as long as there’s humidity in the room the aerials still grow into the moss and they’ll naturally climb up and attach and you can water the moss portion so it doesn’t reach the soil. It’s hard to find that balance but it’s important that you have a really aerated mix in case you do give too much water so it can drain freely. I’ll mainly focus on the potting medium and once the roots establish and get stronger then they can handle a little drying out. Moss poles take a little practice and figuring out your routine with them in your environment 😊
@joannanovara815
@joannanovara815 Жыл бұрын
@@plantsbymelissa thank you, you are in a much more humid environment I believe. I'm struggling to find the balance, but I agree about the well draining soil mix(I have to be careful it's not too airy otherwise I have to worry about it drying out *too* much) . My moss pole plants mostly don't fit in my greenhouse cabinets and living in a very dry climate(and majority of my plants are in a big loft area so hard to use humidifiers effectively 😕)

This is a warning regarding Root Greenhaus in Indonesia. I saw several KZbin videos of successful imports as well as some very unsuccessful imports. But they had some plants I've been unable to source in the US, so I went ahead and ordered the plants. 44 days later I still hadn’t received my order and all they've offered is excuse after excuse after excuse. They definitely treat KZbinrs differently than regular people. I filed a PayPal dispute on day 44 (in case you didn’t know, you can only file a dispute within 45 days of purchase). Within 4 hours of filing the dispute, they sent me a notification that the shipping label had been created. They then proceeded to tell me that they would not send the shipment unless I canceled my dispute. They stated that they’d been “scammed a lot by your kind of consumers, opened a PayPal case and forced us to ship the package, then took your money back and got the perfect plant package”. My kind of consumer? Someone who doesn’t want to be ripped off for a very significant amount of money? (I ordered 34 plants!). Anyone who has been through the PayPal claims process knows that’s not how it works. Getting your money back for a purchase that was never shipped is very easy. Getting your money back from a package that was delivered requires proof that what was delivered wasn’t what was purchased. Having been through the process once, it’s not something I’d want to go through again. This tells me that the people who filed claims and were actually refunded by PayPal received plants that had to be mush. Otherwise, PayPal wouldn’t have refunded their money. I would DEFINITELY NOT recommend this business. The amount of frustration they've caused, the lack of communication, and the unfulfilled promises are not worth the risk. Buyer Beware. If you have had successful imports I'd appreciate knowing who is trustworthy. I've had good success with both Ecuagenera and Tropicals. Are there any others that have sent healthy (or at least rehabable) plants in a reasonable amount of time? Recommendations are appreciated.

I saw this pop up in new comments. Sorry to hear about your experience! I've never imported on my own but just did an unboxing with Aroid Asia and I got pests with my order but the plants seem healthy. There was a $25 fee I had to pay that they didn't tell me about so was a little unhappy about that. They said they would refund me but they went MIA on me. I produce the unboxing video in exchange for the plants but I don't feel like I get special treatment. Communication has aways been iffy. Over a month passes and still no word from them. I have to reach back out and ask if this is still happening. I wouldn't know who to import from honestly. I have trouble trusting companies :(
