These are good exercises in that they are based more on training your ear and thinking about phrasing, rather than technique and drills. They are fun ways to improve your playing. Thanks for all of you hard work.

Since I started singing and gaining an ear for the notes vocal melodies use, I find myself creating much stronger melodies naturally. I also love a well timed 4th. It’s fun to land there and decide to move down to the 3rd or up to the 5th.

These are some of the best lessons on KZbin. I hardly watch KZbin lessons anymore cause I find myself watching 10 minutes of something I already incorporate in my playing. These video have been a spark in my KZbin adventures lately

I was recently trying to jam along with a BB King video, and he kept doing this. I kept trying to resolve to the root note, it sounded like the most natural way to proceed, and BB kept dancing away. It was maddening!

I may be the only one out there that thinks this... but some of the best tones you've produced over the many videos I've watched come from those Eastwood/Airline guitars with P-90s in them. They sound so warm and seem to match your playing style perfectly! Just sayin...

Really useful demonstration. It's so automatic hitting the roots. I have to think differently and kind of hear it differently too. It takes me out of my comfort zone but it makes the solo more interesting. Thanks RJ for posting.

Another idea RJ, with all due respect, is how does one internalize licks to be able to play them at will? That is to say, think the lick and play it at the same time no matter what the context if that makes sense. Again, just a thought. Thank you for your consideration and for passing on your mastery.

Brilliant lessons RJ. I've been learning so much from your superbly tasteful playing over the past few years - where do I send the deserved fees? One idea for a lesson IMHO might be how to mix chords and single note playing over a 12 bar say which would be useful in a trio context for example. Just a thought. Thanks so much by the way.

I'm amazed that you only hit a root note twice in your entire improvisation. The human ear wants to resolve harmonic tension as cleanly as possible, thus we always want to get to the root. I noticed that it lends a jazzy outside feel to your entire improvisation. Thanks for this.
@RJRonquillo7 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yes, it's tough to get used to - but you're right, it does create some jazzier phrases.

Omit Root Scales, or No Root Scales ( C minor: x - D - Eb - F - G - Ab - Bb - x ) Bass can play C Also: You can think these as Hypermodes. Playing B minor pentatonic over C major chord gives you a rootless feel, and an additional Lydian Mode #11 (#4) feel ( B-min pentatonic doesn't have a C note )
