Very nice! I recently saved a lemon skunk from a botched soil experiment by converting it to a kratky. The plant nearly died. When I investigated further, the roots had been shocked and died from an overdose of nitrogen I had given it. I rinsed all the soil off and used the technique you've shown on your channel. The plant bounced back after a week, grew insane roots into the nute solution and now its growing into a monster.

Oh my goodness I just love you. I started growing with Aerogarden, I got for my birthday a couple years ago. Then tried the kratky method. Don’t have much money. I have been following you for 2 years, you have helped me to work with things I have. I have always cut the extra plants from my Aerogarden and thrown them away. I pulled one out and started it with the Rockwell cube, plastic shot cup and a water bottle. It is growing well. I am so excited. Thank you for your teaching videos. You are awesome.🥰🥰🥰♥️

I rinse them in a solution of (food grade) hydrogen peroxide and it seems to almost always work if you catch it early enough. When I first tried it I figured it might kill the plant or at least weaken it by killing beneficial microbes on the roots, but often they seem unfazed. I also do kratky peppers in smallish jars-- I've noticed that shearing off a few centimeters of the the roots with a super sharp knife when they get close to the bottom of the container seems to keep them vigorous and fruitful while maintaining a small size. Love the channel Khang!

I just trimmed my roots last night after watching this. There was just a little that seemed oversaturated with water but I can see more new white root growth coming from the roots that were there when I got the plants. I added a little nutrients and am waiting to see if that helps too. A few have dry leaf edges. It does not seem the way they are positioned that the light is too much as it is shining more indirectly on them since I don't have a real grow tent or way to hang the light from above so light is coming from the side on the floor propped against a wall.

As a preventative I like to add 2 tsp (10 ml) of 3% H2O2 (fungi stat) per 1 gallon (3.7L) nutrient solution in my Kratky systems at startup. Not only does it help with the root rot but O2 is generated which helps oxygenate the roots when you lack a diffusing stone. When I add nutrient solutions to “top off” the liquid level I also add H2O2. I usually don’t have systems with enough volume to last the entire growth cycle so I do have to periodically carefully replenish nutrient solution. This is how I manage to stave off root rot. Great video!

I've had good luck with adding a cotton butcher string wick. Wrapped around the rockwool like 3 times then long enough to reach the bottom of the bottle. This keeps the rock wool wet enough to grow air roots so the bottom ones don't drown. I've seen my growth grow 3x, but that's not saying much my stuff was struggling before. I'm mainly doing outdoor small container kratky. Also helps so my roots don't die off during a random hot day.

Had rot on a tomato. So did 3 tsp of 3% hydrogen peroxide in 1 gallon water. Used that for my plant without nutrients. So far growing healthy white roots as the rotted roots stay dormant as the h2o2 kills the bacteria. Since plants have a natural immunity they can defend against the hydrogen and use up the oxygen as it breaks down. The formula lasts about 4-5 days before having to change again. Great for kratky.

I've always had luck doing exactly this for root rot. I've never lost a mature plant yet and I've had to be pretty aggressive some times. Younger tender plants, not so much. Unfortunately the warmer your nutrient water the less oxygen it can hold, making you much more susceptible to root rot. I've gone back to soil in my grow tent as my light makes the environment too warm (80f) for healthy root development. I don't have an air conditioner for me, so I am not buying one for my indoor garden. lol

I have somewhat of an odd problem, wanted to see if anyone could help. I have one of those hydroponic growers and it comes with those biodegradable brown pellet things made likely of coconut husk or the like. I also bought those glass wool cubes that are popular for hydroponics as well. Here’s my issue: The water keeps the tops of the pellets damp. Plants usually germinate and start growing just fine, but having the moist tops of whatever media I’m using invites mold to grow on the tops over time. How do I fix this? I obviously can’t keep the plastic covers on them once the seeds have germinated and grown large enough, so I’m obviously forced to have the moist tops of the pellet be exposed to the outside environment. The glass wool goes longer before the mold appears, but it’s still bad after a while. Keep in mind I’ve even gone as far as dripping like a couple drops of hydrogen peroxide on the exposed substrate, but it doesn’t make it go away, usually just slows how long it takes to appear. Is it possible to add a chemical fungicide to my water reservoir? I’m not even going to care about “harsh chemicals” or “wanting organic products”. If there’s strong shit out there that’s relatively food safe, let me know. A few additional notes of info if this helps inform your advice: I’m growing in an apartment indoors I have even soaked my media in hydrogen peroxide solution before adding seeds I change the water, scrub the inside and disinfect with weak bleach, rise, dry thoroughly, then take a small amount of running alcohol and give one more wipe and rinse. All this is to say the revervoir is very clean and root fungus isn’t an issue, only the stuff that starts on the top and then infiltrates down. Again, want to reiterate, I would LOVE a chemical that can be mixed in to the water reservoir and is safe for the plants roots and also, I’m growing culinary herbs so relatively non toxic. I guess also, make sure the fungicide is compatible with a hydroponics setup, I know some are designed to be sprayed. I guess I could use those and just spray the tops and see if that works. Any info would help thanks.

@adgrimes1981
@adgrimes1981 4 жыл бұрын
I was going to say the same as Khang. I’ve tried peroxide, but it didn’t really help resolving the rot. Just mix it in each time you mix up a new batch of hydro fluid, and that helps prevent the rot from happening in the first place. If you do this from early on, and every time you change the fluid, when you take the plant out and look at the roots, they look REALLY healthy and clean. It definitely helps, but as Khang said, needs to be done from the start

In that particular scene, root rot is brought on by the amount of light at the root zone. It MUST be dark. Also there are signs of algae, which again points to too much light at the root zone.

This advice came just in time. I have strawberry crowns in my Aerogarden and the roots are turning brown and the plants are droopy and the leaves are curled. I tried the hydrogen peroxide. That didn't work. Will try this. What causes root rot?
@CaroleMorin
@CaroleMorin 3 жыл бұрын
Roy Jackson are you using the regular pump in your AG? If you are, that’s what’s causing your root rot. The crowns should always stay dry. Only the roots should be wet. The pump creates a water cascade on the crown and that’s not good. Deactivate the pump by putting the timer at zero and add one or two, depending on the number of pods you have, aerating stones with an ordinary fish pump. This will stop the waterfall on your crown and will provide your strawberries with a ton of oxygen which they need. Also, they require very little nutrients. Never go over 300 ppm. I have mine at 100 and they’re doing great.
