Root is a game of adventure and war in which 2 to 4 (1 to 6 with the 'Riverfolk' expansion) players battle for control of a vast wilderness.
The nefarious Marquise de Cat has seized the great woodland, intent on harvesting its riches. Under her rule, the many creatures of the forest have banded together. This Alliance will seek to strengthen its resources and subvert the rule of Cats. In this effort, the Alliance may enlist the help of the wandering Vagabonds who are able to move through the more dangerous woodland paths. Though some may sympathize with the Alliance’s hopes and dreams, these wanderers are old enough to remember the great birds of prey who once controlled the woods.
Meanwhile, at the edge of the region, the proud, squabbling Eyrie have found a new commander who they hope will lead their faction to resume their ancient birthright. The stage is set for a contest that will decide the fate of the great woodland. It is up to the players to decide which group will ultimately take root.
Root represents the next step in our development of an asymmetric design. Like Vast: The Crystal Caverns, each player in Root has unique capabilities and a different victory condition. Now, with the aid of gorgeous, multi-use cards, a truly asymmetric design has never been more accessible.
The Cats play a game of engine building and logistics while attempting to police the vast wilderness. By collecting Wood they are able to produce workshops, lumber mills, and barracks. They win by building new buildings and crafts.
The Eyrie musters their hawks to take back the Woods. They must capture as much territory as possible and build roosts before they collapse back into squabbling.
The Alliance hides in the shadows, recruiting forces and hatching conspiracies. They begin slowly and build towards a dramatic late-game presence--but only if they can manage to keep the other players in check.
Meanwhile, the Vagabond plays all sides of the conflict for their own gain, while hiding a mysterious quest. Explore the board, fight other factions, and work towards achieving your hidden goal.

Awsome gameplay! Thanks. But Dutchy must get +7 VP adiditionally: 11:55 and 31:20 and 40:40 Duchy gets +1VP for swaying a squire (total +3VP). 29:45 and 1:28:20 Duchy gets +1VP for removing Corvid token (total +2VP). 58:35 Duchy gets +2VP for swaying a noble.

@@Quackalope Yes, it’s true, your Root gameplays are better and better every time ))) That’s why I am gonna to watch third one. I’ve watched maybe 10 gameplays already and I can’t imagine how it possible to play this game without mistakes at all. I think the best thing players can do it’s avoid big rude mistakes because not knowing or wrong understanding the Law of Root. And so I think it’s normal when players have forgot something and do some little mistakes like you did in this video.

I feel like the moles are OP, but it might be an Hype effect. This map mode might leave a huge amount of spa e to develop before forcing the clashes, which is a good news. Great videos!

I don’t know if they are OP - they are hard to get up and running but can be very powerful if / when they do (I think a group of factions play like this.)

"Come to think of it".. what a great game! Interesting early strategy with the Eyrie almost paid off. Think an interesting idea for a faction would be where you only have 5 warriors or so (perhaps bears) but they are more powerful (either with extra hits or resistance) and work like a slow walking wrecking ball. I also like how Matt and William accidentally had matching shirts for their faction colours :) great and funny game guys!

I had a similar faction idea. Mine is more defensive, as they are turtles. They have less warriors than normal as you said (I was thinking 6), and each one takes 2 hits to kill (you just place the meeple on it’s side like with damaging larger ships in TI). My idea was that they’re monks, and they’re protecting their monastery.

@@Quackalope Haha. I was waiting for it so much. Didn't get to watch it until now because I was on my way out when you relased it! Really happy you decided to go with the Eyrie in order to mix it up, and I notice you used the default setup for the clearing markers. :) To bad Jenn (? Jen? Jan?) couldn't make it, I missed him. One thing, players should have gained a card after using the Ferry. ;) The answer the question at the end of the video: For future expansions, Leder Games have said they're going to use fan factions. They've already announced one of them, Fangus Khan, which unfortunately I'm not too thrilled about. It seems out of place with the theme, so for me it's a thematic issue - The name and the motive for its place on the board doesn't entice me. I would like to learn to like it though. I'm guessing they will move the concept inhouse to develop it more before releasing it, so there's a chance I'll love it eventually. Other than that, I just hope they don't oversaturate the board with factions. I would actually prefer incremental improvements to the existing factions, like new Leaders for the Eyrie (Strategist - Once per battle you may re-roll one die / Fortifier - You may build more than one Roost per clearing / Pacifist - You may build regardless of Rule). And perhaps new elite warriors for the Marquise, etc. Keeping the old factions fresh instead of overshadowing them with new factions. :)

Cole said the number one thing he looks for in a new faction is how it interacts with the already-existing factions. What role do you want the new faction to serve and how does it interact with the rest of the game? He says a mistake people make with their own is that they draw too heavily from Euro game design. Obviously you don't have to follow this, but it might be a helpful thing to keep in mind.

Absolutely loving your Root videos. Top notch, really hope you'll do more games, love seeing how the factions interact. Question: does removing a plot score points, as it's a token? Not sure if it's slightly different for the Corvids, but at the start, the Duchy removed two plots for 0 points - or maybe I missed it! Appreciate making videos and catching everything on camera is super hard - or plots are just different! Poor moles!

Great videos. I love the way you work with the camera and of taking different shots to make it dynamic and also get viewer more involved with the closeups. Also the background music is great. The video is great! Love watching these playthroughs and really enjoyed William just going for it by getting all of his roosts out and then intentionally going to turmoil. I think you might be misplaying the swaying of ministers. When you reveal cards to sway ministers, I am pretty sure the cards don't need to all be the same suit. You just need to be sure you have pieces in those clearings. So to sway a lord, you could reveal one mouse, one rabbit, and two fox cards as long as you have one piece in each of those respective clearings. So at 22:53 (and probably other times), I'm pretty sure Matt could have swayed the minister.

Hi. I loved the video. Have seen you mention a dominance victory is difficult and seeing how closr the Duchy where to 2 of them. I actually managent to win by to win my first ever game by fox dominance with the cats. It was a 3 player game with eyrie cats and vagabond. The eyrie player and me where new at it.

Quick note on the crows only because I didn't see it anywhere else. Near the end of the game is said that was can't move out of our in to a clearing with a snare. However, they can be moved into a snared clearing, warriors just can't be placed in a shared cleaning. You probably know this though. Cheers! PS - Are the crows as good as these videos make them seem? Seeing you pull down 20 points in a turn is deeply disconcerting.

I just said it wrong :P like normal! The moles were playing on hard - so the crows are very good at scoring a lot of points quickly - but only if they are left alone. Other factions have a similar scale ability if they are able to get up and running. A lot of this game is about table balance :P

Granted, this could've changed from the Print-n-Play, but I believe the Snare plots only block movement out of the clearing (as well as blocking the "placing" of pieces), not into the clearing. Didn't affect the game that I could tell, though.

I'm new to this game. Just thinking here: Doesn't it make more sense thematically for each player to resolve birdsong, then move on to daylight, etc.? I think you are supposed to place the moles starting position opposite of the Eyrie, it says in the law of root that you place in the opposite corner of the keep, starting roost or starting garden if possible.

Ugh, I never put anything but bird cards in build slot in the decree, unless I have no other choice. Or if I want to trigger a turmoil. That's a dangerous, dangerous strategy over there :D Also, you shouldn't have attacked the roosts, there was a guaranteed 100% turmoil there...

Question: at 1:12:45 the Corvid player chooses not to flip a Plot token which I assume was a Raid. Can Raids be flipped just to score points, even though they don't have a flip or face-up effect? In retrospect that would have given him 4 points plus 2 for the next two Plots he revealed that turn, securing victory.

UUUUGH! 52:55 You can ONLY put one card in your decree when you place a BIRD. But, William played these birds like a pro. He should have held on to that Ambush anyway, they're coming for you BROOOHH!!! William is my hero....as a bird. He has an item card hostage for most of the game tooo.. hahaha.

Anthony Cashaw - 7.4.2 You must add 1 or 2 cards to the decree but only 1 card added may be a bird card. So if you decree a bird card you can still place another non- bird card in the decree as well. That rule is basically there to stop 2 bird cards entering the decree on the same turn. You gotta risk some non-bird cards if ya want to accelerate your decree by 2 per turn.

When swaying ministers, do all the cards have to be of the same suit? In the PNP rules it says they have to be "matching", but it does not say so on your official Faction board, just that they have to match clearings with your pieces.

Ummn.... Would you believe house rule? I'm typically so dominating, that I need to play with a handicap. This is also why I chose not to score 7 points for swaying ministers / removing tokens. ahem But yes, you're right. I prepared by reading the print & play rules. I tried to note changes, but I missed this one. Guess there's nothing for it but to play again.

Hello great video. I wanted to ask a question i cant find the answer anywere but if you play with the riverfolk what happens with the boat mechanic? Does it stay in play or does it make the riverfolk less useful?

With the river-folk the raft stays in play - however like in the normal mode you can only use it from a location you have dominance in - the river folk can make ever location adjacent for you by paying just like the river mechanic :) - so they are really interesting on the board!

Question 21:52, the Crows deal 3 vs 2, they can remove de tunnel and score a point or just the warriors?; because extra hits are not limited by the number of warriors right?

Yes the tunnel could be removed and it would give points - however in that time stamp I only had one crow - so I could only do 1 damage. If I had 2 crows I could have removed everything like your suggested.

At 29:45 Does the conspiracy really happend if you battle them away? I think not. Also it went away so the Mole should have a point, its a cardboard piece, and those gives points.

Yes, the raid plot happens. The others don’t. And yes, that would be another point I missed. I know the rule- just wasn’t paying attention. Damn - that makes 7 missed points...

Yeah, I was asleep at the wheel. That makes six points I missed. I definitely could have tried going for a dominance win two or three turns earlier than when I did. This is a common problem for me in games where you track victory points as you go. Probably why a gravitate to games that don't use victory points or games where they aren't scored until the end.

I love what you guys are doing with this channel, quality is second to none. Have you also considered adding a lady to the channel?. While I thoroughly enjoy every guy in all your vids, I think that increasing diversity by having a woman join your playthroughs would mean a lot, even as far as attracting more women into the hobby, which is still largely dominated by male gamers I think. Hey Ionut :) - it’s complicated! My past relationship was not interested in board games and Jan’s wife is willing to join us soon - I hope - but not able to do so often. We don’t want to force someone to be on camera if they are not interested. I also don’t currently have a girlfriend or even a friend who I would spend evenings with until 2-3am filming like I do with Jan. Because of the production we do on the channel - I can’t outsource the media creation! We have and will continue to feature everyone we can on the channel - my first two documentaries were on amazing women in the industry, I have worked with Elizabeth and Girls Game Shelf as well - so let people know they are welcome to come film with us :)

Quackalope I totally get that, here’s to hoping that you will find someone interested and it does not necessarily have to be a girlfriend or wife. Any female presence would do a lot for your channel I think. I did watch the Elizabeth Hargrave feature you did - that was an awesome moment. Quackalope I would love more. Just be careful - if you run Riverfolk, Vagabond, Marquise and Corvid, the military faction (Marquise) will usually get very little resistance. 😊 My suggestion is Marquise, Duchy, and then any 2 of Corvid, Vagabond or Riverfolk. ✊

So your videos are great during the wait. If Jenn (still don't know how to write his name 😖) decides to be Marquise again when another military faction is present, my tip for him would be to focus on Recruiters and getting his army out (since he said he wanted advice 😊). I also suggest having the turn order the same as the setup order, as it's a tad unpleasant to take your first turn as Marquise after for example WA or Corvid have taken theirs, though this is not a rule.. Here's a suggested start: Round 1 1st action: Overwork Sawmill (pre-place it in a matching clearing based on the cards you were dealt) 2nd action: Build Recruiter 3rd action: Build Sawmill 4th action (if possible with Bird card): Recruit Round 2 1st action: Build Recruiter 2nd action: Recruit 3rd action: Overwork (or any) Round 3 1st action: Build either Sawmill, Recruiter or Workshop depending on needs 2nd action: Recruit 3rd action: any This lets him get his army out quickly so he can match the Duchy/Eyrie, and will increase his card draw which consequently can lead to more actions if he draws bird cards. 😊 Just remember to do Recruit often!
