Perfect timing I just ordered 5 trident maples to make a forest and I’m going to make cuttings off of mine to add to the forest! Thanks great video!

Great to see you grow cuttings of different kinds with such success rate most of the times. 👍

Yes, thanks! I am quite pleased too and hope to create an overview of the most common species used in bonsai and how to root them using cuttings. Maybe I should try my hands at pines?

I've known it was possible with Tridents for a while now, but seeing it done with such simplicity and success as you have is very inspiring. I can't wait to try cuttings of my one and only Trident Maple next spring. I tried air layering my Trident this year but it just callused and did nothing, I'll try your cutting method. Liked and Favorited this vid. 👍👍

Layering tridents can be a hit-and-miss. I *think* wet substrate during layering reduces success with trident. But maybe different varieties have different successrates. I have had mixed results!
@DeciduousSnurb Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip Jelle, I use perlite with sphagnum moss in my layers, but yes I think it was too moist now that you mention it. @@GrowingBonsai

When you make a cutting and cut this years elongated branch then separate it into lets say 3 cuttings which one tip end or bottom piece would you say has the best chance to root?
@GrowingBonsai Жыл бұрын
I do not use the part that has not started to mature, so the very herbacious tip.
Much better success rate this year - good stuff. I'm just about to do some cuttings now on my tridents so lets so how quickly they root?
@GrowingBonsai Жыл бұрын
They might. Just make sure you protect them in winter!

Great videos. Keep it up! What are your maintenance after planting the cuttings until it will grow roots?
@GrowingBonsai2 ай бұрын
Not much. Protect from sun. Keep at 100% humidity and wait. Every few days I open the cover for a few hours and scheck whether it needs water.

Can you do the cuttings now? In August, what is the best time? I am out of Virginia btw.

I took them in early spring, right in the first big push of growth

Great video. Have you done any videos on developing these into bonsai? I have many young saplings and i am looking for guidance on pruning, training, etc. Thanks

I am afraid I am going to make one of one of the cuttings but it will take a bit of time... You can look into my root over rock videos if you want.

Brilliant. Thanks for sharing. Would this work with sweetgum trees? In UK. Been trying to grow sweet gum from seed collected locally but had no luck

I have absolutely no idea what a sweetgum is.

@@GrowingBonsai Sorry. I should have used the proper name. Liquid amber styraciflua Is native to America. Very maple like and has beautiful autumn colors. I have seen ppl queening up to have photos taken next to one in a local park. I am trying your method with Colchis Maple. Maybe be to late in season but worth a try
@GrowingBonsai Жыл бұрын
@@drfreddave9020 aaah, liquidambar. I onow the species but have never worked with them. They have a name of being dificult when doing rootwork so I would be hesitant to say they root as cutting
@drfreddave9020 Жыл бұрын
@@GrowingBonsai Thanks for the information. I was thinking it was just my technique trying to grow them. Even suckers taken straight from the surface roots refuse to grow no matter what I place them in. I will try seed collection again. Love the azalea video

Would it be too late to try it now?
@GrowingBonsai Жыл бұрын
You can try. WOrst that can happen is you had a few tips cut early and die. I think it is fairly late, but I am now ~ 2 months before first frost

@@GrowingBonsai Thank you Jelle, it feels like Ireland has relocated to the south pacific so we might not see frost until mid Dec. The maples need a clip anyway so will give it a try and pop some in the green house as a control. I bought clonex on advice from another of your videos but had to go to one of those shops that sell the tents and lights, not sure they believed me when I told them it was for maples :D

Thanks for this video. I've taken cuttings with variable success. I think the main thing I did wrong was cutting them above a node instead of just below. I'll try again soon in the spring. Cheers from Australia

I'm going to try now (end of August) with a few maple cuttings. If it works, great, if it doesn't at least I've tried. I'm a bit further north of Jelle but not by much.

Thank you very much for this super helpful video! I just took cuttings from a really nice Michael Steinhardt Trident so I’m hoping they take. I may have missed this but where do you keep your cuttings in the bags? Outdoors? Heat pad? Thank you for any response in advance!

I keep them outside in a well lit spot that only het a little sun at sunrise. Overheating of bags is a real risk
