The Anti Saloon League successfully combined propaganda, religion and political coercion to make alcohol a wedge issue in elections.

@@damnedyankee946Presidents don’t sign constitutional amendments. It’s solely at the discretion of Congress and the state legislatures.

This does make you wonder. If the Anti-Saloon League had pushed to impose regulations on alcohol consumption like we have today. Such as being over a certain age, “open container” laws, or mandatory counseling for alcohol related crimes. Instead of trying to ban alcohol all together. Would things have turned out better?

Oh of course it was a DEMOCRAT who opposed drinking. They ruin everything.

+Vladpryde - uh huh, and who is surprised the founder of the prohibition movement was a teetotalling evangelical republican?

***** I believe he was a Democrat, not a Republican; though honestly I cannot find any definitive proof of his political affiliation. But seeing how he was a Southern Minister, and most Southerners at this time were Democrats, then it's not hard to assume he was one as well. Just because he was an Evangelical, doesn't automatically make him a Republican. Remember: these were the same Democrats who institutionalized slavery and segregation throughout the South, and they still exist today in the Democratic Party. Seeing as how they like to control things today, it's entirely believable that they institutionalized Prohibition in the 20's.

Vladpryde i believe they were called "dixiecrats", alabama governor george wallace would be an example of a "dixiecrat", later it would become nixon's "southern strategy". (win over george w wallace segregationists to the republican party) worked like a charm. y'all is welcome. and join you did. we can also laugh (sarcasm) that a republican freed the slaves...

***** Well...a Republican DID free the slaves..... I'll stick with the Republican party. They aren't perfect, but it's the lesser of two evils.
