Great video I use COFFEE filters to dry my seeds in as paper towels have a tendency to hold on to the seeds and make it hard to get them off, another thing I use is PARCHMENT PAPER, just a thought to share. Love your videos Jess!☺

Oops...I didn't know about the whole fermenting thing. When I didn't have any seeds this spring and everything shut down, I took some store bought cherry tomatoes and scraped the seeds into a fine mesh colander. I rinsed the goop off by rubbing the seeds against the strainer with my hands, then I put them on some paper towel and let them dry for a couple days. Then I planted them, shredded paper towel and all, and hoped for the best. To my surprise, they sprouted so it looks like I'm growing cherry tomatoes this year. Saved the seeds from a store bought bell pepper and now have little sprouted pepper plants. I think I'm hooked on saving seeds. ♥

I just love your joyful and helpful energy and optimism. It brightens my day and I learn something along the way. My biggest dream besides becoming a mother (which has happened!) is having a huge and prosperous garden. The past two years we finally built a small garden that was not very productive. We are planning to move within the next year and one of my biggest priorities is not the house, but the land so that we can have the garden of my dreams. My grandmother would be so proud of me, God rest her soul!

I just press the tomato seeds against a paper towel to rupture the gel bubble around the seed and rub it off. Then if I'm lazy I just let them dry on that paper towel or I'll put them on a clean one to dry and then peel them off and put them in an envelope to store them. Sometimes I even leave the gel and just let them dry. They almost all sprout for me. The other thing I do when I have older seeds or seeds that are difficult to sprout is spread them between damp paper towel in a zip lock baggie and check them daily for sprouts. Many sprout in a day but some take a month. As they sprout I plant them in seed trays. It works great. Sometimes too great. I planted some ancient honeybee sunrise cherry tomatoes seeds hoping to get one or two plants. I have 74 plants. I hope lots of my friends want cherry tomato plants. I couldn't throw them away when they wanted to live so badly so I planted all of them.

Hey Jess! Great video. 1. Plants have to be of the same Genus and the same species in order to cross pollinate. 2. Tomatoes with exerted stigmas are the ones that you need to put isolation bags on the flowers. Most heirloom tomatoes have inserted stigmas and you don't need to worry about these. Cucumbers can cross with other cucumbers but not with the Armenian cucumber because these are melons. 3. You can grow one each of the 4 species of squash in the same area and not worry about cross pollination. C.pepo ( most of the summer squash varieties and some pumpkin varieties) C. maxima mostly winter squash varieties. C. moschata (butternuts, Tahitian melon squash, Canada crookneck, Seminole Squash- which would be a great variety for you to grow as they flourish in hot, humid climates. C.mixta/C.argyrosperma which are mostly for stock feed and Fall decorations. These can cross but not in the garden with bee's. 4. Peppers are insect pollinated as well as self pollinated. Most of the plants that are wind pollinated are cereal grains, grasses and corn. Also the "gel pockets " in a tomato are called locules- Low Q els. I find in interesting that you mispronounce a lot of common names but you can pronounce "potager" with ease. I do really enjoy watching your videos. I have been gardening organically since the late 1970's. I have mostly used French intensive (double digging) to achieve raised beds. I am currently using no dig beds but still adding all the amendments that are associated with biodynamic practices. You might want to try this as it will cut down on a lot of the insect problems that you face. Anyway keep posting your great videos!

I've saved seeds from all over. If I find a great tasting tomato or pepper in a salad or side at a restaurant, I'll bring home some seeds. The restaurant we went to the day my husband proposed had a group of beautiful colored Crepe Myrtles. Some of the early flowers had gone to seed and I took them home. Walking around the garden centers I'll sometimes find spent blooms that I'll deadhead for them. I once had over 20 varieties of growing plants, trees, shrubs, flowers and herbs that all started with found seeds. Even the sides of the roads often have flowers and shrubs growing wild that are Heirloom, such as Roses, that you can dig up a seedling from or find seeds from and bring home. Those are some of the strongest and healthiest plants I have! Seeds are a amazing creation just waiting for the chance to grow.

I don’t ferment my tomato seeds. I’ve been saving seeds for almost a decade with a more than 90% germination rate. I put the seeds in a fine mesh strainer, rinse them and rub gently against the strainer, then turn out onto clean paper and allow to dry. I move them around with a spoon or spatula occasionally as they dry. If they stick, I just peel the, off the paper. I do t use paper towel, but printer paper, usually the blank back side of something, and that sticks less.

Bees topically will not cross pollinate like you were saying. They are smart harvesters. Many reasons why but one of them is to harvest all the pollen from what’s in season. Just like use when we plant our gardens. Spring, summer, fall. They also do to to control moisture in the combs to prevent fermentation. You can tell bees don’t like to cross pollinate by tasting the honey. You can tell the type of pollen the bees were eating as well as the colour of the honey can tell you early harvest vs late harvest. I’m so glad you guys got some bees now. So good for you as well as your garden.

i usually always write the year on seeds that are dried and packaged in ziplocks ... in case I don't plant the same variety the next year and I don't mix different years seeds of the same variety in the same ziplock ... that way in case one year doesn't do well, I can just toss them all out if I have another year of the same variety. Finally, I often store seeds in a freezer that I have an excess of, because they will keep longer. Hope this helps others.

I've been seed saving for years now! Love the money I save. I store my seeds in old prescription pill bottles. My family and friends all saving for me. I just cleaned them really good and take the stickers off and let them dry out really good. They are a great way to storm where you don't have to worry about rodents getting into. One year when I used to storm in plastic zip locks I had a squirrel get into him and eat a bunch and destroyed my seeds. So I came up with the prescription pill bottle and it's been great. I usually put exactly what is in the bottle in the year and month that I stored it. I end up having so many that I give so many seats away. I love blessing people with seeds.

Here I was worried that I wouldn't find a video that would describe the process of saving the seeds from my plants and I have learned so much from this one video that I'm gonna have to watch it several more times when the time comes to save the seeds. Lol Thankyou so very much.

Some archeologists found some bean seeds in a pueblo ruin and successfully grew them and I now cook and eat Anasazi beans. These beans were hundreds of years old!

So many good tips. From the last tour vid I learned of produce bags to hold melons on trellises. From this vid I learned about blossom bags. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. Using these tips is going to make my gardening so much more enjoyable.

LOVEEEE your videos! Did you know King Tutankhamum's tomb was found and opened in 1922 and there were seeds inside? (for King Tut's afterlife) Howard Carter (discovered the tomb)successfully germinated those seeds from 1325 BC in the late 1920's. Thanks for all the hard work you do on the farm and on the videos for us!

YES !!! I would LOVE a canning tutorial ! I know how to can pickles. But I don't know how or other ways to can food. I would love to learn methods so I can save my fruit more and can foods that are NOT pickled !

Ive been saving seeds for years and mostly to keep plants going in my garden but also just to have on hand in case I can't buy them next year. Seeds are stored in my pantry safe for the future. Thanks for sharing the tips on fermenting away the gel. I'm going to give that a go.

Hey Jess, thank you for this video, I watched it again, since I'm going to save some seeds of a courgette that was grown too big to eat, so I better refresh my mind ;) This was the video that led me to your channel somewhere in summer, and I am so glad to have found you. I learned a lot in the past months. You got me sowing: My saved seeds from years ago, now bear fruit: paprika! I love it! I bless you. Love from The Netherlands, Diana

Saving seeds from beans and peas is so much fun. I was saving sugar snap peas this last week and though I have more than enough for next year, it's so satisfying to crumble away the husk. I wish I had left more for seed.

Hello from Northern Australia! I hand pollinate my pumpkins, squash and zucchini by picking off the male flower, ripping the petals off it and rubbing the stamen directly onto the middle parts of the female flower. I do this at sun rise while the dew is still on the plants. I have to do this because the bees here are real slackers. I adore your channel. It's so lovely to see a mature woman who hasn't devolved into "goat derangement syndrome" where a woman gets goats and starts babbling baby talk at them like it's cute. Disturbing stuff. Please keep up the awesome work. Blessings from my household to yours, ~D.
