Hello from Northern Canada! Zone 7 - Pacific North coast rainforest. I am just getting my garden started now because the soil is finally thawed! Direct sowing a few seeds but starting my tomato, pepper, squash seedlings indoors. I find your videos so helpful, and after this video I feel more confident direct sowing a wider variety!

I learned a shocking lesson when we moved to the country when my son was 2 yo. They are raised completely different out here and to my horror, we went back to the city as he turned 3 for a wedding. It was held at a HUGE church where people wore church clothes, real shoes (not boots) and dress jackets not button down cowboy shirts. After the service, we were all standing outside talking to old friends and as I looked at my son, we had his back to me while standing in front of a tree. Of course, he had to do this in front of the whole congregation. Country boys are so natural! But my 3 yo daughter had him beat. We went in town to a nice big box hardware where they sold flower boxes and fancy sinks instead of fence posts and cattle tanks. I was checking out and turned to see her sitting on the floor model toilet, pants down. I wasn't fast enough and will forever be mortified at what I saw in the bowl when I grabbed her. We sure were country come to town back then as I kept being reminded of all the things I wasn't teaching them. 50 years later it makes a great story but --.

We were at the back of the property working and we finally convinced my niece that a cider block was just an outdoor potty. She used that thing all day. There is 10 years between her and her sister. We were outside working and her sister needed to go potty and she took her over to a cinder block and was trying to convince her to go potty instead of going in the house. Apparently she felt if it was good enough for her as a kid it was good enough for her sister. She got over ruled since we were close to the house. She took her inside and we busted up laughing. Who knew cinder blocks made such great little kid port-a-potties.

I have trouble sowing seed because we have an abundance of birds which like to snack on my seed. I swear the crows sit and watch me plant. Then come the next morning for breakfast. The last time I tried to direct sow I sat on my porch with a 22 rifle. Out of 5 rows 40 ft rows of corn. 2 rows of peas 2rows of Bush beans . I got maybe a dozen or so plants. So I just start everything in my greenhouse. But on a more positive note we don't get very many tomatoe or cabbage worms. Because the birds like to eat them also.💕💖❤💕💖❤

This video was so helpful. Companion planting stresses me out. I had someone tell me one year when I was battling the first hornworms that I had ever seen in my 12 years of gardening, to plant marigolds. So I did my little bit of research and set out to seed the most gorgeous marigolds. I had them as a border in the garden and down a few rows. I'll never be convinced that the they didn't BRING pests to my garden lmao I have never dealt with squash bugs, cucumber beetles and whatever else was out there.....until those darned marigolds. Never again lol

I could never direct sow for spring in Southern Minnesota. We go from freezing cold to hot. I have 3 feet of snow in my garden. Sigh. But I have noticed we don't have the pests warmer zines have. I have never had a pest ever in my garden after having a garden for 15 years. PS 4 boys with 11 snow days in 1 month last winter. I so get it. 50 is shorts weather. We also get over 100 in Minnesota.

That's the thing about gardening. Most things are grey loose guidelines. People seem to want everything black and white. Unfortunately, nature don't work that way. Borage may no keep the hornworm away. The noise and busy airspace of bees coming for the flowers might make the hornworm adult uncomfortable and thus, no larvae. Some people say the seeds may rot, but I think that would be where temperature got high enough to start germination or really hard freeze. My experience is like you said, the seeds just sit there and come up when the soil warms enough. Basically, they will start to grow when the annual weeds start. 19:05 LOL yes, 25C (77F) is newfie boiling point! 22:32 DON'T TRUST ANYTHING HE SAYS!! LOL

Different climate, different feel. Thanks for your common sense approach. Also, check out Myers-Briggs personality tests. I bet you're an introvert. The ones on the web for free aren't really accurate, though! Also - maybe borage is a trap crop, supposed to draw the tomato hornworms instead of repel?

You and your family are adorable! Don’t feel bad about needing the jacket at 50. I’m in AZ and am freezing at anything under 70. I suggest letting your back to eden space uncovered so it can start to decompose and get let nature do its thing. I’m doing it and the BTE group told me that I should and if anything seeds, I’m hoping I can just catch it. What do you think about that? Because I almost covered mine as well with black plastic. I may still solarize other areas but for the part I have everything down I won’t. I’m mixing a few methods though and just going to go with it haha. I’m a compulsive researcher as well haha.

If your putting up a wire fence on those nice posts I would encourage you to cover it in fruits that vine! Hardy kiwi (Ken's red female and a hardy male that will cross pollinate it). Table grapes, Red Flame will grow in your zone and taste wonderful!!!! Chinese magnolia vine, it flowers and is edible. Blackberries (columbia giant thorneless) are huge and lovely choice. Raspberries and many other caning fruits! I highly recommend these nurseries: burntridgenursery.com and raintreenursery.com

Have you ever used a soil blocker? Do you find it’s better to just buy the plastic trays?

I'm rewatching this is 2021! I had brassica seeds (Japanese giant red mustard and ragged jack/red Russian kale) over winter in the "polar vortex" when it got down to -20F and tons of rain and snow this winter.

9:26 Not just Roots and Refuge but anyway who grows regularly: How can I know when to move seedlings to a bigger pot? I mean in general for all vegetables I don't direct sow but more specifically, I have 5 arabica coffee trees that are about 4 inches tall in a starter pot about 4" deep, but I'm reluctant to take them out of their pot to see where the roots are in the soil - don't want to damage them? Will pulling them out and putting in new soil create any kind of "shock" to them? Am I worrying about nothing? lol Should I just pull them out (carefully) and check the roots to see if they're... what, bunching up at the bottom like they need more room? I don't even know what to look for, lol.

I always love your videos, but especially when the slow trickle of sweet music pops up in the background. After a long day of work it settles me and gives me peace- Thanks!👍

I'm one of those companion planting "rule" followers. Or I have been. It's been stressful indeed. Lol! I became a believer because of watching my own cabbages & tomatoes. Their rows were perpendicular and the closer they got to one another the smaller they were. I became a companion planter and have been careful & miserable ever since! And I'm not sure I have been a whole lot benefited, at all. I would have to do all the "holds" to prove it to myself now, because I'm as of now going to attempt to throw caution to the wind and turn over a new leaf! Thanks, Jessica!

Thanks for this helpful video. Quick question, what do you use that ornate jug for? I've noticed it in many videos just sat in your greenhouse and just wondered why you have such a delicate looking jug in the greenhouse where it could easily be damaged. Just curious, many thanks

I CANNOT wait for conversations in the greenhouse this year! I’m super excited to see all your seeds in that large of a space! My brother is getting into stain glass making and I hope he makes me a black iris similar to yours!

My tomato and pepper seedlings have just developed their 2nd set of leaves and now I'm wondering whether or not I should begin fertilizing them. Do you fertilize your seedlings and do you have any suggestions or preferences on organic fertilizers that are good for seedlings? Thank you.
