Yes, it is a true, and ancient, philosophy. However, today's society has gotten so insane, robbing, stealing, drug abuse, violence of all kinds, etc, that it would turn out to be more like....give a man a fish, he will eat it, see how tasty you cooked the fish, then proceed to beat you half to death and steal the rest of your fish, leaving you to wake up sore and hungry. Haha, well, sort of.

My peppers were planted in the Spring and it got soooo hot here, (Fl) soooooo fast they just grew leaves. My bell peppers are like a small tree growing great now. The poblano peppers only grew leaves as well but now that the temps are in the 60°-70° range the peppers are really coming out now. I am so excited cause everything in my garden pretty much died so fast but the peppers hung on til now.🥰❤🙏🌶🌶🌶🌶🌶🌶

My grandpa grew Jackson wonder since before I was born. It is a staple in my garden. Very prolific and if you get tired of picking just let the plants mature and the pods will dry on the plant. Just throw the dried beans in a mason jar and you have butter beans all winter with no processing.

I am just like you and love to sit with the seed catalogs and make the lists out of what is desired to be grown the next year. Only there is one drawback for me is usually don't have the funds to pay for them. So each year it is fairly bittersweet watching everyone talk about all their new seeds and well just scrounge to get a few each year to grow. Have a blessed upcoming gardening season.

omg this video is soooo exciting i got my first Baker Creek catalog in the mail a few days ago and went crazy. i also received my High Mowing catalog so i ordered seeds from both. even though i had already ordered from my Seed Savers Exchange catalog. yes you are right about curling up on the couch with catalogs and a " hot toddy" i see a lot of seeds that are not in the catalog .

I like to ask people what it is they want that they cannot buy or is too expensive. That was how I started growing things, Figs was one of my first fruit trees, back then you could not get fresh figs in the store at all.

I have started Asparagus from seed for that reason! Artichokes are coming up next. And if you think about it, lettuce is pretty expensive for what it is, and for how easy it is to grow it in season! Also, whatever your favorite veggies are, chances are there are varieties you have never tried because supermarkets don't do it like that.

I am looking at my catalog from Bakers Creek also. One day I wish I will be blessed enough to go there in person. Thank you for taking us with you.God will one day give me the homestead I dream about. He blesses us and we are already so blessed with what he has given us. I need more land ( not enough in the city for what I need) a home which is one floor, I am so grateful for the people he has brought into my life. The homesteading community makes me know i am not a freak for cooking everything from scratch, growing as many vegetables as I can in the small place, and not giving up on my dream to live where I can have chickens, more room to grow more food and who knows what other things God will bring into my life. This is the 3rd of January 2020. I received my Baker Creek catalog a week or so ago. I'm so excited for spring to get here I can't hardly stand it. My orders in the mail, now just waiting for my seeds. I got my ball Complete Book of Home preserving in the mail today. Can't wait to teach my grandson how to can. Well good news is we got our seed book. Bad news is i signed it up in her name and she looked through it and now wants me to grow all types of flowers!! Also on top of that she was looking through telling me i need to grow this n that!! LOL!! We don't have a place to start the tomato plants so i told her that's out of the question. I'm in zone 8b in Germany and I order from Baker Creek every year since they have varieties I can't get here (especially beans, squashes and corn). I'm happy to see you mention the Blue Lake bean since I ordered that from Baker Creek, also the Dragon Tongue (yes, they grow a bit; I grow them in the bed with my corn and let them climb up the stalks. I don't know if the pods are stringy since I let them mature to harvest those delicious beans inside). Brussels sprouts are wonderful to grow, I'd really recommend them if you haven't grown them! They're one of those vegetables you can have in the garden over winter and still have fresh food.

I grew the Habanada peppers last summer and I LOVED them! I loved how tropical the taste was - I'm not into super spicy peppers, when I try them I can tell that there's so much flavor hiding behind all the heat, but I can't taste it because my mouth is on fire, so it was wonderful to be able to appreciate the flavor without the heat! it was my favorite pepper this year!

The trinidad scorpion was great! Grew them in raised beds, zone 5a this year and got roughly 40 pods per plant. Spice level is excellent for hot sauces and salsa, but eating it straight should be reserved for pranks!

I love hearing you say french plant names, here's my input on simplifying french names. Merveilles de Quatre Saisons could be pronounced like Meh-r-vey de katt-re seyzon, and Cour Di Bue I believe would be Coeur de Boeuf which could be said Keur de buuf. :)

I grew the Beni Kodama watermelon on a trellis next to the Kajari melon and both were super growers for me. If you want a very sweet, small watermelon, look into growing the Beni Kodama.

Another way to use radishes is to make "chips". Slice the radishes really thin on a mandolin, season the slices (or drag them through Ranch dressing) and then either bake or dehydrate (I've done both). Best wishes from Kate in Olympia, WA

@@TalkingThreadsMedia thanks for the info. I loved radishes as a kid because when we went out to eat (rarely) we were served radishes as an appetizer along with crackers and butter and salt. Dad always raced me to see who could eat the most. We would take a small bite, dip in salt, then take another bite till gone. I never knew or ever saw anyone prepare them or serve them except in salads and I've watched way too much YT cooking shows. Assumed raw was only way and couldn't figure out why so many gardeners grew so many radishes. I finally commented on YT Black Gumbo and he answered with roasting them. So now I'm growing some to try. Just wasn't sure how they were roasted, flavored, etc. I saw one show years ago that said they were good on bread with butter which was a popular kids treat after school in France. Tried it but wasn't popular with me. I also saw no reason to eat them as they didn't seem particularly nutritious but Black Gumbo said they were. I will certainly try the chips - my dehydrator is being delivered next week. Thanks again.

The Judge didn't expect to like radish chips, but was pleasantly surprised -- especially since the "heat" was gone and the flavor was sweeter. I'm trying Brussels Sprouts this fall, two varieties from Baker Creek (one is Red Rubine, the other is a regular green one). After watching the YT Channel "Steve's Seaside Allotment", I realized that Brussels Sprouts are one of those plants that just keep on producing over time. Unlike a cabbage, you can harvest all season long, and apparently the tops (leafy bunches) are one of the most delicious of brassicas. I only have seedlings so far, so I don't speak from experience. He also loves "Kalettes" which are a cross between brussels sprouts and kale, where there are little kale bunches growing up the side of the stalks instead of mini cabbage sprouts. I have started some of those as well, but they are a hybrid, not an heirloom, and I got them through Territorial Seed Company (pricy!).

This is so helpful to plan my garden next year :) This year I'm focused on tomatoes and kale because I've just built my 3 beds. One bed is perennial dwarf bushes (2 haskaps, sugarpie raspberry, grape vine and strawberries inbetween), the second is my annual veg, and the third will be a mix of perennial and annual flowers I grew from seed :) May add a 4th veggie bed next year if I really get into diverse stuff!!

Love love love seeds also We could talk for hours. Fortunately and unfortunately I live in Florida. The fortunate part is I have a year round growing season and the unfortunate part is I have fusaruim wilt in my yard, which means I can't grow anything viney. No peas, cucumbers, squash....etc. so I try to focus on what I can grow. Beets (which I love), carrots, onions, etc. But I'm with you on seeds. Oh and I love flowers. Particularly zinnas, sunflowers, marigolds, native plants/shrubs. Yeah....we could talk for hours.

Concur on how to teach. Providing foundation is the best start. Letting others use their tools with that foundation helps creativity. I said blue lake before I heard you. 😆I finally got my bs to grow. Buckwheat was an awesome ground cover the sprouted on top of my clay. Greens for the wildlife as well as bringing in nitrogen into my clay.

Have you thought about writing a book? Or a series? You have so much information and have a great way of teaching... I would definitely want that book 😁

Oh! There are so many things that I would love to grow that just don't work up here in Vermont. Eggplant, okra and melons are at the top of that list! One good thing about being in zone 4 is that we can do peas all summer. I had no luck with the king of the north pepper but I plan to try again. Maybe I started them too late. 🤷
