Hey ya'll, I'm Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm
Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you'll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.
There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart - to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we've learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you're here.

I liked the light levels, & continuous focus on you while moving about, & the kind of periferal ground that feels natural. It seems comparable to what the human eye would see if walking around with you. The fact that this camera is much lighter is very important too.

I don't think your farm has ever looked more like a farm than in this video. Watching you be stalked by a cow, and then turkeys with the rooster hanging around. It just felt really farm-y. Thanks for the video!

During Covid the Walmart here taped off all of the non-essential areas, including the seeds! I remember going to Walmart after they took the tape down and the garden center was packed with new gardeners just trying to figure out how to grow something, anything because people were really afraid. I spent hours in the garden center answering questions about seed starting and seed starting mix, people were really perplexed by seed starting mix, but it sparked something in me. I had been wanting to do KZbin for a while, but I really didn't think I had anything valuable to share. Ater helping dozens of people that day I sent you a message about starting KZbin and you gave me some really great advice about overcoming my anxiety. I've had my channel for a few years now, and I just wanted to say thank you. Thank you for taking the time to respond to a total stranger. Your kindness is just the thing I needed to believe I could do it.

I think you nailed it Jess. You are why people watch. I know it sounds egotistical to say so but most of us frankly watch people we like. One of the surprising things to me is that I still, watch your channel. I generally like content that is heavy on doing and light on talking. You talk a lot. 🙂 I don’t mean that in a critical way but it goes against what I normally like. When I first saw your content I liked your concept of turning your waiting room into a classroom. It really struck me a chord with me. I wanted to stay around and see what else you had to say. I like the way you relate to your family. I like the way you are matter of fact but not in my face about your faith. So no matter what you post I’ll be around to see what you are doing. I am a fan.

I think Jeremiah hit the nail on the head with his comment. One major reason I love your content is because I ALWAYS learn something new. It may be small or it may be big. Some creators take for granted that their watchers know the small things and skip to the big points but the small, seemingly insignificant things are just as, or more important than the big things. Hope that makes sense. Lol.

I love the fact that everyone is so different. My thoughts are: I think the new camera is really sharp on focus. However, you need to bump up the warm tones, it looks very white/ blue. Would love more yellow orange. Just my 2 cents.

@@joytotheworld2100 I agree; I also thought the colors were LESS colorful than usual with the new camera! It's like the world was illuminated by LEDs instead of incandescent bulbs. :) I also felt that the sound could be better, at least outside. The difference was very obvious in the cut from the scene in the milk room to when Jess was standing just outside. It sounded like she was a little on the fence about the microphone that came with the new camera, so maybe there's some middle ground there, with something available that's smaller than the old mic, but performs better than the new one. 🤔

I found you maybe 2 yrs ago? It was before your move. What struck me was how genuine you are. It was you talking about living in circumstances and an environment that was making you miserable. And how You found your way to a fulfilling life. That is inspiring. Your openness about feelings and struggles is important. YT is full of fluff but your channel stands out. The camera doesnt matter. I mean yes not getting dizzy with sudden movement is great...the edting is good. But we come for you. Like you said 'how do i add value today.'... you do that just by sharing who you are. We appreciate the honesty and opinions without judgement for people who think differently. That is huge. Too many homestead channels think their way is the ONLY RIGHT WAY.....and that just isn't true. They are quick to say you will only succeed by following their instructions. I never feel like you are judging how we do things. I do feel like i popped in and we are hanging out on your farm just chatting. I love that.

You are so right about the general media's portrayal of relationships, especially so called family shows. No matter the portrayed income, education level or ethnicity, the mom or wife is often bossy, nagging, discontented, the dad or husband is often clueless, childish and sneaky. Between that and the elevation of everything negative and less that is substantive in so-called news, I just tuned out. Thank goodness for choices, KZbin and Roots and Refuge!

Thank you for saying "why". We've been researching and becoming familiar with KZbin. We are starting an actual posting schedule in 2024 but not so it is a have to. What we do here is what inspires us weekly so I know we will share when those things happen. We only have 7 followers on here but it doesn't matter to me, Why? Because I only love to share the beauty and the art perspective of growing food and flowers. All things colorful connect others is our motto.

I really enjoyed this viewing experience! I have noticed the "little things" in the growth of your channel, as well as in you, as a person. I had noticed when you were unwell, I had noticed the authenticity of your laugh and your voice, I had noticed your logo change with the tree swing, I had noticed the small sunflower logo in the corner. I see you and the work you've put in. And I appreciate it all as a viewer!! I have been praying so hard telling Him that I trust Him. He has lead me this far, I know He knows what He's doing. It has been hard these last several years, beautiful, because that's what growth is, but hard. This video came in perfect timing. I've been thinking about becoming a content creator, but have struggled with the imposter syndrome. What Grace is shown by your vulnerability with The Farmers Table. You have just given me so much that the simple phrase, "Thank you" could never even encompass. I truly mean that from my heart. As a third-year gardener (with a bit more confidence), I would love to share. It's so important the message that I want to convey, especially to newer gardeners, or gardeners who don't even know that they're gardeners. I've had so many people reach out for advice and knowledge after sharing my journey through my posts and stories. I find that I could add value in that. I am also currently reading Animal, Vegetable, Miracle... let me tell you! Thank you for the recommendation!! It is truly a book that I feel everyone needs to read. It has been life-changing. I want to spread the message. Bring back the old ways. Show people how capable they are, even while I feel I may not be adequate enough to teach... I'm rambling. You've answered a lot of my questions. Thank you, Jess. Bless you. 🩷

Hi Jess, Thank you for sharing this. I have a channel of my own. I don’t have a nice voice or anything to offer. My soul reason for starting a channel came from so much grief/loss in such a small amount of time. I’m the last one left from the entire family and friends I’ve known since birth. I’m it. There is no one left to ask. At 51 I became an orphan as my Dr put it. 👀 It’s shattering and hit me in such a way that no matter how uncomfortable, shy, awkward or weird I am 😂 I just want to pass on everything I can that meant so much to me throughout my life. I want my kids and grandkids to know my family who came before them , more in depth than they ever did. I haven’t yet really found my way in doing that completely yet but I will. Journaling is just not me. All of that being said, I don’t have any expectations for success or funds. Just fun growing along and sharing with like minded people. There aren’t any gardeners or quilters in my area that I know of to hang out with so this is all just so dear to me. I look forward to your channel. The house is going to be so exciting for all of you. I love your new camera. Blessings ❤ ~ Robyn

No background noise like wind. The animals are always great to hear them being vocal. Appreciate your honesty about starting and all that goes with developing your own channel. I have been a nurse for 45 years have worked in many areas from classroom education (college), ER, ICU, supervisor office nursing as a NURSE PRACTITIONER and delivering babies as a CERTIFIED NURSE MIDWIFE IN HOSPITAL setting only. So I have a resume with lots of work places and advanced practice education. LPN, BSN-RN,MSN ADULT HEALTH EDUCATION, FAMILY NURSE PRACTITIONER Board Certified, Certified NURSE MIDWIFE, and finally my terminal degree is DNP DOCTORAL IN NURSING PRACTICE. ALL THAT TO SAY I WANT to help students that need that extra help to make it through nursing school help at which level they are at. Have lots of knowledge to share. So having content is not a problem just unsure of speaking to a camera with the prop’s I will need to use. I know this is long so any tips would be helpful in how to start with introduction to the channel and what someone even patients can get out of some of the content. You are amazing and is enjoyable to watch. Both channels and Miah channel I enjoy.

The messy kitchen message resonated with me the most 😂 I vlog about our horses and my yard is almost always a mess! There just isn't enough time in my day to tidy up and sweep the yard and wash all the poo stains off the horses BEFORE I turn the camera on. I used to watch other channels of a similar genre and feel so inadequate because of my messy yard. Then I realised that those channels are staged, not real, not reality. And that's fine if that's what they want to do, but it's not what I want to do, so I just do me 😊 And on a personal note, this video is such perfect timing for me after wrestling with various things over the last few days ❤

Hello Jess I’m not into being a utuber although I have upload a few small “garden tours” for familyand friend and myself on FB and I found myself struggling with all of what you said but I enjoy your take on being my true authentic self. No one can be as good at being me as I can be. This season of my life is focused on just that. You and your farm look spectacular on your new camera. ❤ Thank you for begin you and always Be Blessed 🙏❤️

Thank you Jessica what a wonderful message. I have been so stuck in looking at what I lack or think I need that I have become blind to what I do have and I realized I have everything I need right now and I should be more focused on how I can use it and grow. My son told me once he couldn't get a job because he had no car. That's when I saw my own thinking was just as messed up. It's good to talk about what's happening so I can see another perspective. Bless you Jess.

The old camera is more stylistic, like it has a filter. The new one is crispier with better sound. I like both, definitely use this one too.

Thanks for this. As a small youtuber who isn’t monetized yet, despite vlogging for over two years pretty consistently, I needed to hear these words of affirmation. Your videos are always valuable to me. And I so admire and respect your opinion. Especially through the winter months when homestead vlogging is hard and requires a little more creativity. I like the small camera. I saw a comment that said more real and less cinematic as the big camera. I would agree with that. I also agree with the comment of there is a time and place for both. Your ewes look semi close. But considering they are not first timers I wouldn’t helicopter till their bags get very full. They can bag up big for three weeks before lambing. They can also drop a day after big bag. Look for wax corks on teats and bags looking ready to bust before helicopter momming too much. lol. For first time ewes it’s different. Some don’t bag up till day of birth. Happy sheep farming! Oh also be sure to check that corks are out of mom’s teats after lambing. Sometimes the lambs don’t have a strong enough suck to get the cork out and give up before getting the good stuff. Lambs are the weakest willed farm animals in my opinion. They give up easily. Hope this helps.

Oh gosh hearing you say the thoughts you had when starting the new channel… that really hit me. That you, Jess, still feel those things after having such great success and being someone who I view as professional at this thing… whew that helps me so much. ❤

I agree with many here. Thank you for giving us all the courage to do it scared! I started a channel to use as my personal journal vlog and if I pick up followers along the way great! I've always been very nervous about putting things from our life on the Internet(people have been very nasty and attacked me over my appearance and other things over the years among some other things) but you gave me the boost I needed to just live and learn to ignore the haters. I love your new camera it makes it feel more vivid and like I'm really right there on your farm with you! I love it. Keep being the beautiful you that you are and I've learned so much from you over the years.

I would definitely say your other camera is more aestheticly pleasing. It has a warmer tone, and it's less, crispy? Also this one seems to make your eyes feel very different, which I know is a strange thing to say haha, but after years of looking at your face, it's something that stuck out to me. That being said, making things easier on you is super important, so if this camera works better for you, go for it!

I think this new camera looks great and tend to agree with another comment that I saw where the person said that it looks more realistic and yes, I think that’s exactly what it is the colors and just everything I think so I like it a lot and I very much appreciate you doing this video. It actually helped me a lot as I’ve been working on making some videos and I’m going to start a small channel myself. My focus right now is really just to have a place to for my own recordkeeping but we’ll see how it goes. Thanks so much for sharing. I appreciate it and always learn from you Jess.!❤

I’ve started my own channel because of you. I am currently using my phone, it’s an iPhone 8 so quality isn’t as fantastic as it could be. But content creation is absolutely of interest to me. My posture is my biggest insecurity when it comes to being on camera. It’s not good, but I’m working with my chiropractor to fix it. I really look forward to documenting my gardening/homesteading journey this year. Figuring out my style, and teaching people in the process.

I needed this ❤ Ive been struggling to motivate myself to make more content because my channel is growing so slowly and trying to figure out how to get it to grow quickly. But this talk made me pause this video and think multiple times and I even teared up. I need to stop trying to get ahead of myself slow down and let things grow organically. Thank you Jess ❤ you always seem to say the right things at the right time for me and I really appreciate it

My channel is mostly me -- a middle-aged woman -- playing a video game , which seems a little silly, but I love the game and the modding community for the game. It makes me happy. 😊 And I put it online just in case it will make someone else happy too. I like learning from people who seem to be authentic and enjoying what they do.

Jess, you’re always valuable. No matter what it is. This older woman has learned quite a bit from you, a half the age person of I. We’ve been homesteading for almost 40’years. I do not watch too many channels but you’re my number ONE!! Your new equipment is great. Hope it makes your load lighter.,

The camera comes across more life-like / Reality TV and the big camera is more polished. Off hand, the sound quality of the Big camera is my preference. This new camera sounds like you're further away. Though I can hear everything, it's not as seemless of sound like your big camera. Also, your head is often cut off with the new camera, no biggie just feedback. You bring a ton of value in every way you show up and share! Love to you, your family and your team!
