I've just moved back to my childhood home to care for my parents. Its overwhelming, it's a massive place with many big challenges for me. The first thing I'm doing is planting a garden. The positive outlook and education I have gained from watching Roots and Refuge has given me something wonderful I have brought home to my parents. I am planting a massive flower garden first of all. My mum is already cheering up at the garden beginning to happen. We are all like pebbles dropped in a pond, We send out ripples far and wide. I'm sharing your love and wisdom, It is making a positive difference all over the world, can't thank you enough ❤ So excited for you and your new gorgeous farm.

-Fartichokes 🤣🤣🤣 I had no idea!! -I just ordered a pack of the stickers. These are some of my favorites so far! -I feel better knowing my tomatoes aren't too tall to make it work. They're nearly as tall as yours right now. 🤣 -It's overwhelming but every other undertaking you have done has been overwhelming in some way and God has seen you through. I'm like you though, if I can't see it, it's really hard for me not to worry and get anxious and play the what if game. But God. Always. Comes through. -We personally love when you wax poetic -My 4 year old, Maddy, says Hi and she absolutely loves your farm, especially the garden and baby goats -YES! It is 100% okay to feel more than one thing at a given time. I'm pretty sure that's what makes each of us so beautiful. -We're so excited for y'all! Both families. This is one of the most beautiful stories of God's provision. ❤

Your approach for this year is a winner in our ‘book.’ We are renters and leave every house more loved than we find it because it is a space in which we are spending our daily lives. We pour into the space knowing we will leave it and have to spend months emotionally uncoupling from it before we go. Planting for the next people is part of that process. Imagining them finding things they likely didn’t expect is part of the fun.

Absolutely love the message about plants wanting to grow! I had a forced hands-off season last year because I had a baby in November (obviously followed by a global pandemic). We ended up with literally hundreds of volunteers from our compost (seeded mostly by food I couldn't stand to eat the previous summer while pregnant.) As a life-long control enthusiast, the garden is always teaching me lessons about letting go of control.

uhhhhgggg girl, yessss! You're speaking directly to my experience. I worked so hard in my youth to make all my dreams come true. It was around my 30th birthday that I looked around and realized I wasn't happy. But it was because I became so addicted to the work that I'd never learned to stop and be grateful for what I'd achieved and been blessed with. And grieving the things you lost or gave up along the way to make those dreams a reality. "It's ok to be sad and happy at the same time" Ding ding ding!

Lol! I started my tomato plants way too early last year, like in early February and couldn't get them planted due to late snow and frosts. They were 2 1)2 to 3+ feet tall! Hundreds of them! I also couldn't sell them at the Farmers market as I had planned to do, so I was desperately giving them away and selling them cheap. I had just turned out backyard into garden space by covering it in free wood chips. So, at 67 years old, I had to move wood chips away and dig very deep holes to plant my too tall tomato plants! What a job! Planted over 100 that way. So, this year, I didn't start them until March 30th and 31st! Much better!

With having to let go of my own garden here for years it was an ongoing process and one that eventually I was able to see past the grief of. The year I pulled into my driveway and realized God had given me a meadow where my well tendended dooryard garden was after 8 years of mourning the loss of it. The beautiful simplicity of the plants along the fence by the garden boxes in my back yard that just grew in beautifully and without my help. I completely agree Jess. The garden becomes less obsession and more enjoyment when we can release it to grow and open our hearts to the surprises God will bring when we do. I look at what you are doing with your move and am so excited for you and Jerimiah and your family. I can't wait to see what will come of that beautiful property of yours. I'm looking forward to seeing the adventures your children get to have living there too. So exciting! Love the stickers, The door sticker and coffee mug...I was laughing at that one. Jess, we are looking to move out of our first home later this year. ALL of my 4 children were brought home from the hospital to this house. My babies all learned to walk here. My 4th was almost born here. This is our first homestead, we had chickens here the first year. We've battled for 12 years to have a garden. The first few gardens were so pitiful, (they stripped the topsoil of this property many years before, we found out, we were left with just the under clay.) We never gave up. I am having so many feelings and this summer will be hard for me, feeling that why bother to garden at all if we are just going to leave? You and Miah talking about legacy and sharing your feelings about this move have truly helped me to process and work through all the feelings I am having at the same time.

I started an indeterminate beefsteak tomato called Steakhouse tomato from burpee and as I was moving them they were beautiful and were in plastic party cups... at about a foot tall !!! As I was moving them I broke one at the dirt line !!!!! I thought for sure it was done... then I heard your voice in my head tomatoes are forgiving ..... they root all the way up the stem .... so I quickly cut off all the lower leaves and put it in a deep cup of water near my grow light .... you know what??? There are roots all over the stem it lives on !!!!! thanks Jess 😊🙏❤❤
