I love this idea too! Especially building your soil in a self-sustainable way. I feel like the pressure to spend money bringing in loads of compost, manure, and soil can be a lot when growing large gardens. Outside of crop rotation, and home composting, what else can we do in a fairly affordable way to help build our soil health?

Starting your own compost is a great way to start having your own nutrient rich fertilizer. Also, over the fall/winter when leaves fill up my beds I add extra on top. Near the end of the season, close to time to clean up the garden, I flip the leaves into the dirt. All that beautiful fungi, and nutrient spread throughout the dirt and continue to feed your garden through the season. I'm a lazy fertilizer, not going to lie. And throwing compost directly into your beds during the off season and flipping it into the dirt adds a nice punch. Just some fertilizer for thought lol.

Hey Jess! I'm almost done with the video and you just asked what kind of garden content we want to see. I would love to see you do a greenstalk. I know you've talked about them and I've loved those videos. What I want is for you to take one of the original greenstalks from planning to planting and the care of thru the season, what you would do if that's all the space you had. I have 2 and a few grow bags, I would love to work along with you like that. What you would plant, how you would arrange the plants based on how they grow. This is only my second gardening season. Thanks

Here’s a video/series idea. First a little backstory: I live in Southern CA and I eat mostly plant based. I try to grow as much as I can in my tiny backyard garden. Following you has been so encouraging to my heart and my (now) green thumb! Thank you for repeating content because you remind me when I should be doing what, each season! I need that. I have two 4x4 raised beds, two 2x2 raised beds and two GreenStalks. I make most of my own soil by composting in place and using mostly shredded paper, garden scraps and kitchen scraps. It’s alive and it works! Anyway, I would love to see more videos on growing successfully in my GreenStalks since my food grows “ok” but it’s always small despite my use of organic liquid fertilizer. Also, videos on growing maximum yields in small (urban) garden beds for cheap. Because…inflation 😬.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the same garden content each year/season. Please bring us along as you plan, start seedlings etc. I could honestly listen to you while you fold laundry. It’s like hanging out with your BFF. Plus I’ve only been starting my own seed for 2 years now and still feel that I have a lot to learn. I would also enjoy additional content on composting and amending my raised beds when there are limited resources available to me naturally. Even though we are in a farm with animal waste, I feel that we’re missing some critical key part of what we should do. Since having Lyme the past 10+ years my brain doesn’t function great at retaining what I read, so I’m still struggling with proper adequate composting and building no dig beds. We want to increase an “in ground” area of no dig beds and I’m uncertain on exactly how we should start. Thanks 😊

This past Spring I couldn't tell if a seedling was a volunteer tomato or marigold. I was confused, because it was a pot that I experimented with growing 2 tomato plants in. I had to replant my entire tomato crop that year & they didn't have time to produce a lot where one would've fallen in, but a critter did steal one & could've dropped a seed. Google Image & even a plant ID app gave me all different kinds of ID's. None of them correct, lol. Even the people in my gardening group couldn't agree, some were even telling me that it was something poisonous that doesn't even grow near me. So I let it grow. It turned out to be a marigold from one of the previous year's seeds that somehow made it into that pot from where I was growing them. It amazed me how much it looked like a tomato seedling to me though. LOL!

However, it is always helpful to hear about others experiences with different seeds/plants, perhaps what they have learned over the years that may differ from "conventional" wisdom or advice. That is one of the joys of gardening - you never stop being surprised or amazed by something you hadn't experienced before. Sounds like you had a lovely Christmas - we also had a very low key couple of days and it was wonderful.

I hope everyone was has had a wonderful Christmas. I'm so excited for the gardening year, I've had my seeds out several times setting aside stuff I want to grow next year. My goal is to get the shed cleaned out and organized so I can start my peppers and tomatoes in there this year. I need to clean and sanitize my pots too. Last year I think I had some kind of bacteria or disease that was killing my seedlings because I wasn't washing my containers after I used them. My goals this year are to plant more mindfully and to work more toward preserving my harvest. I ended up composting or giving away stuff because I wasn't motivated enough to do anything with it or I had so much I got overwhelmed. We also had a family of mice eating up stuff and that was discouraging. I'm definitely planting less okra this year. I am trying to plant more things I know my family likes and I'm going to give them the space to thrive instead of crowding so much stuff together. Wish me luck because ADHD gardening can be a struggle.

Lordy, we lost so many of our birds to 2 hawks last winter. They are very bold if they are hungry enough. And they were hungry! My heart breaks to those that have been lost. We have since netted the tops of all our coops. Crows are a blessing because they chase off the hawk and help protect your birds. We will often throw moldy bread (which crows enjoy a lot) across the road from us to encourage crows to stick around. They are my peacekeepers!

Garden questions/ ideas for videos: garden planning never gets old; do you set goals for your garden seasons?; what percentage of “new to you varieties” do you give space to?; starting cut flowers; do you grow anything specifically for your animals?; do you have garden deadlines for yourself?; what do you grow for nostalgia’s sake?; family favorite garden produce; how does art and beauty impact your garden planning design?; do you persistently struggle to grow anything?

You are seriously the BEST! Your channel is hands down my favourite, and you've never made a video that I didn't just LOVE. The other day someone said to me "you're the Jess of Australia" and it was seriously the best compliment I've ever been paid.

I know it isn't feasible, but I would love it if the seed companies would all send their catalogs by mail in between Thanksgiving & Christmas. Nothing gives me more joy than to snuggle up on the couch in the evening and start looking at seed varieties...

I would love some videos on water. Irrigation, collection, how to find land with a good water source. Everything water. Some of us are not used to the hot dry summers. WI here, it’s been 50ish degrees….above 0. There wasn’t a snowflake on Christmas. Everything thinks it’s Spring and I’m still over layering

I ❤ BEAR!!! 😂 It’s been raining so much that my Labrador left into the brook soaking himself, ran through the mud and was sequestered to the laundry room with a large chewie until he was dry for brushing the mud out. 😂

Some content I'd appreciate more of this season: different composting systems and a bit of the science behind making good compost, more mushroom content with Will, and just being able to live vicariously through a warmer climate gardener as you start seeds before i can!

Jess, I’m just a beginner gardener (3rd year), with a small backyard garden (6 raised beds), but I feel the EXACT SAME WAY. As soon as Christmas was over, I started obsessively garden planning and I can’t stop! I love it so much.

I just want to see garden tours. I learned so, so, so much merely by staring at different parts of your garden week after week. It taught me spacing, timing, trellis techniques. I miss it.

For seed starting video content, I would love to see a timely seed starting segment included in each video for a specific vegetable or fruit, extending to harvest, Example; strawberries from seed; best varieties for growing regions, when to start seeds, the soil requirements, how to plant seeds, temp and water, caring for seedlings, when to plant out, care of the growing fruit, harvesting, uses for harvest, preparing beds for winter. Many channels just show bare root or begin showing vids on established plants. With all the seed starting vids you will be doing, including a little segment focusing on the growing life of just one veg would be so helpful.

That one lazy day!!!!🎉 It was glorious... Leftovers for the win! Ham, egg and cheese sliders, and turkey egg noodle soup! Now onto finish my sewing projects and planning my potagerGarden. I believe a no fuss one this year. Grow the tomatoes, cucumbers that I like. More herbs adventures! But more cut flowers this year! As a family of 2, we've found that our freezer, canning is full. What we have an abundance of people don't really cook anymore... I have considered allowing the garden the 7th year rest, except for those tomatoes 🍅 😉

19:12 my suggestion for content would be to simply keep me on track to what I need to be doing in my garden at that time of year. I think you’re one zone above me, so I won’t be be too far behind in the growing season. I’m a new 9a. I just did inventory on my seeds last night lol. And yes, winter should be over after Christmas lol. My bday is around Mardi Gras so that’s when we usually start warming up pretty good. We did Cajun Christmas this year. Your dumplings sound delicious mmm!

I hang pinwheels all over the bird runs and it keeps the hawks away. I’m definitely in gardening mode. My kids asked if they could come out and burn some cardboard and I said, “yes, but I’ll use it in the garden.” 😂

Jess, just following along with you as you do your day is awesome 😊 As a "homesteader" in the beginning/classroom stage, I like seeing what others do daily to run and care for their homesteads and animals. I am waiting on pins and needles for Beulah and the Carolina homestead exchange to open to the public! I live about 2 hours from you and hope to make the drive fairly often Also interested in your newest goat journey as I am hoping to get my first doelings in March. I believe my friends does are due in just a few weeks!!!🎉🎉🎉

hi jess 🤗 you got a lot of rain. i was dreaming about gardening all last week. i was so excited to wake up every morning-like the first day of grade school 😂🤣. as a result, i got a lot of gardening work done, including sowing seeds in one of my raised beds 12/26. today there's a good amount of rain, so i covered the bed with cardboard so the seeds don't wash away. yes, abundance is a blessing and at the same time, i have cried from being overwhelmed (that's what sharing is for). ive been watching you for years and your talks never feel old or stagnant. tfs

If only the hawk had done its call, then you could have definitely figured out what it was 😅 I'm in the city and the red tailed Hawks never come in this far, but smaller hawks and falcons do and they love to prey on my songbird friends. They do keep the rats from the corner stores away from my tomatoes! Your joy when being able to think of gardening again 🥰 its infectious!

I am a brand new gardener. Just moved to northern Idaho. And wanting to learn when how to sprout, how to decide what to plant, companion planting…. Pros/cons to different styles of gardening. I’m empty nest so not cooking or growing for a family. I’m devouring all your old content, but love the new… and also love your Farmers Table style and recipes. I’m fairly new to vegetables in general both growing and eating. Learning how to use what I grow is big for me… even if it’s seasonings, flavoring honeys or vinegars. Or making diy gifts for people. For instance learning to Carmelize 14-15 onions at a time and freezing… then learning how to use them in different ways, was awesome! Ty!! Love hanging out with you.
