RootsMagic 8 Preview - Tasks

Wow! I can't wait to see the community preview. Tasks is such a POWERFUL tool! I've had RM for many years but never used the Research, To-Do, or Correspondence options because of their limitations. This new task tool removes every limitation and adds the option to link both my computer files and web tags. I build my own genealogy websites. I have hundreds of links, files and correspondence. Some are on paper, some on my computer, and some on the web. Some are text files and some are images. So many of them are incomplete and unfinished from 50 years of research that I've begun to lose track. Now I can link all the unfinished ones to the people, places (etc.) in my RootsMagic database using Tasks. By the way, you said you created Task Folders so those familiar with Research Logs could use them. I will be using them to remind me of where I keep all my current Task / To-Do lists, computer and paper files and computer and paper folders. For example, one RM Task folder might be named "Computer Desktop", another "file cabinet", yet another "Blake 3-ring binder." The possibilities seem endless. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

I’m looking forward to a future video on its use as a research log. This looks great! RM7’s research log method is awesome, but I’d like to see a more thorough demonstration on how this new setup can prove more powerful or efficient than the “simplified” (or limited?) version of RM7’s Research Log. I was having a hard time visualizing the RM8 research log workflow process from this video.

Thanks Bruce for explaining Tasks. I'm looking forward to RM8 and will explore it but I must admit that it sounded like one was creating additional steps rather than just getting on with the entry work for a given person. Maybe I'm too much of a paper/pen person to understand the utility of Tasks.

I have only really used RM7 for the production of a wall chart and I have found it quite good. I can see a lot of opportunities for improvement though, including improved styles and fonts, text boxes and line styles, plus the entry and editing of Person boxes and Text boxes. Saved colours don't seem to save at the moment, as once I try to save another colour it replaces earlier saved colours. Anyway, hoping these sort of issues are being addressed, and I look forward to using RM8 in the near future.

When you import data from RM 7 do the research logs and to do lists map into the individual tasks list or into the folders tasks?

Can you use Tasks to add photo albums to more the one person like wedding albums or family albums that have many family members in them? and is the word Task just used as a name place holder type thing because it didn't sound like the name which would simply be a to do list. I have this task to do for that. kind of thing.

I have been with RootsMagic sence # 3 . I have always liked it, but I am a little scared about # 8. Convince me please!

What will happen to our current tasks in Roots Magic 7 when we upgrade to 8? Are they moved with the person they are attached too, or what?

Is there a comparison between RootsMagic 8 and Mackiev's Family Tree Maker 2019? The pros and cons? Thank you.

I hope the companion book comes out at the same time as the software. I bought Family Tree Maker 2019 for my aunt, (she has use it since it first came out)we are still waiting for the book.

Waiting for FTM book, too. The company will not give a proposed publication date. You can read a PDF copy only.

I want to purchase Roots magic for the first time and of course Want to buy the latest version. Website only 7, has 8 come out yet? I’m just a little confused. Please advise . Thanks

@@Ladyfyre-graphics I just bought RootsMagic 7 and also received a key for RootsMagic 8 when it comes out. So you will get version 8 at no added cost when it's available if you buy v7 now.

Is it possible to multi-select in a list with Ctrl-A, Ctrl-click, Shift-click when e.g. rearranging one's task folders?

Tasks sounds like Greek to me? What do you mean for tasks. I have found it is very difficult to correct mistakes. I hope you make it easier to correct typing mistakes, spelling mistakes. It seems that you can't. I have also had trouble separating father and son who have the same name. The program wants to put both born the same date. I have become very frustrated with the Roots Magic program for that reason. I did not have this problem with Family Tree Maker. A relative told me that Roots Magic was easier to use,

I have many in my tree with the same name down to the middle names so I add the birth year in the first name area. It's a quick way to differentiate them because I haven't found another way. Task sound like a catch all but not really a good name ... doesn't seem to describe the actual use ... to me at least.

You have to pay ... They may still have to discounted rate for buying before it's release. That's what I did last year and they send you the code you'll need when it is released

When I purchased RM7 it was promised to upgrade me for free to 8 when it is finished.

I hate to say it, honestly I do. But this looks far too convoluted to be useful to me. Is it possible to do a word search within the task field? I can see it being a problem to search it, if my list becomes very long. And is this the new individual person page? See: 4:29. If so, it is far, far too busy imo. Ancestry's is bad enough. I turned off the video before the end because the sound quality of the speaker's mic was so poor, I had trouble following it and became frustrated. Sorry to be so complainy, but based upon this vid, I'm already concerned I will dislike the new version. It took me a long time to get used to RM after switching from the elegantly efficient and almost completely customizable Master Genealogist. I like a lot of RM's features and have recommended it to many others. But I hope it doesn't become just an irritating mimic of the dreaded Ancestry. Fingers crossed I'm wrong on all my concerns.
