To everyone who's following this tutorial using 2.8, u have to create a "Displacement" node, connect color to height, then connect displacement node to material output. Also lower down the "scale" on the displacement node to about (0.02). Regarding the displacement on the material settings, use "Displacement and bump". (i'm no expert, but i guess this is the new way of how to use displacement).

guys, in the array modifier, you can set the length to be as long as the assigned curve so you dont have to worry about it in the future.

gah! I can't believe I missed that. You're right. It's in Array Modifier > Fit Type > Fit Curve > Set as Curve. Done.

Well animating it would probably be easier if you turned it into a rigid body. That way you could get physics too.
@saser117 жыл бұрын
+Jeffery White well not really, however there is also a feature that makes it easy to animate, which streches the array rather than adding new segments. look up "Rigging a Spiral Phone Chord in Blender" by CG Cookie. he explains it all.

I was wondering about this because, much like the top comment, I am curious about creating knots, (k)not a knoose specifically but I wanted the rope to tie itself up if I bent it around something in the right way. I am assuming that I need to make it a rigid body first though as it would probably need to simulate physics. Then that also makes me curious if I were to import it into UE4, would I be able to tie knots with it in there as well?
@somephysicsguy5 жыл бұрын
FYI at 9:20 you mention that a lenghtwise rotation of the rope fibers is incorrect. The rope at that point would be a Zz rope, after you adjust it its a Zs rope. The Z & S refer to the rotation of the the Rope and its individual fibers and while for a rendering its probably not that critical its worth noting that a Zz rope has different characteristics than a Zs rope. For example when building a crane you dont want the rope to unwind/ unturn itself, this is where the correct Lay types of rope come into play. I hope I havent bored you and that everything was understandable.

Hope this tips helpful: 1 - You can align UV to edges probably easier with menu - (UVs -> Constraing to Image Bounds). Then just drag whole UV and it wont let it go out of that UV square. 2 - When your blender crash, in most cases it has autosave file. So just go menu - (File -> Recover Auto Save) and pick the latest sorted by date time. If you had this project saved before then it should be named like original save file but just must have latest changes that you didnt save. OR, if you didnt save at all it should be named with numbers(what they mean i have no idea, probably they random) :)

Here's what I did: Added a "displacement node" and connected "color" (from the image texture) to "Scale", then set the "midlevel" to around 0.050. To do this in 2.8 you can follow the video setup or use a full PBR node setup using the Principled BDSF (i use node wrangler to automate this). Note:The results are only visible in Cycles at the time of writing, so make sure you're not in EEVEE. Go through the above tutorial until 'experimental', 15:35 instead, skip & scroll down in Materials to Settings and >Surface>Displacement Method change to Displacement Only. You can now tweak in Nodes using the displacement node (between the Displacement image and Output nodes) A scale of 0.05 worked for me. Hope that helps!

I see some bitchy comments about how people are directed to get textures to the paid site, but the fact is you'll need SOME sort of textures and bump maps if you wanted to make rope, so I don't understand all the crying. Go google some alternate free textures or whatever. Or waste hours making them yourself just to save a dollar. The actual tutorial info on the experimental features is extremely useful... people are getting hung up on "oh simple rope? There's a million 3D ropes out there, so EZ and boring"...causing them to overlook the fact that he's teaching you how to take a texture and actually *change the geometry of your mesh* to make convincing 3D objects semi-automatically, where before you were just making cheesy fake-looking normals. This shit is mindblowing and they're getting the info for free, and there's a free trial to snag the textures too, and all they wanna do is complain. Unreal.

I am stucked because I use 2.8 Blender and I simply cannot change a displacement in Material from bump to true, because there are 30 choices for Displacement but not bump and no true. And because I am new I don't know what to choose. So, I tried 20 from all that choices and nothing make my rope looks good, stay flat. I have only 15 choices or so to choose, and then I will try all that modifiers. Wish me luck!

Just out of curiosity, how did you obtain the lengths using square roots? I used cosine, and I don't see how you were able to get it in square root form. Was it using the Pythagorean Theorem, or some other trick I don't know?
@95t95t95t7 жыл бұрын
Nice that someone else got inspired to tackle this problem by themself. I basically just used the law of cosines and the regularity of an octagon. The cosine contained in the following expression is cos(PI/4)=1/sqrt(2).
@somsoc_7 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if it's possible to make them exactly square in Blender since it has precision limitations, however, there's a great addon called Measure It, which lets you select verts and measure the length between them (also segments, arcs, etc). Can't remember if it's one of the pre-installed ones or not. I used this to measure the vertical edge length, and yes, it's .76537... Then just scale the circle on the x to that value, and it's about as square as you can make it.

😍Thank you for another great tutorial 😒 Though I cannot deny that the thumbnails recently bother me. They convey a certain result to look forward to in the end. They used to be able to give off the idea "You can achieve this very look yourself". I think your snow tutorial is a great example for this. "Blender can do this?! WOW!" These days however the thumbnails seem to deteriorate into click bait terrain, which I think isn't necessary and unhealthy. I really appreciate the time and effort you put into all of this over the years and still cannot wrap my head around my this channel has so few subscribers. Not to ask for even more of your time, but I think a very quick run down on how the scene of the thumbnail has been setup would really, really balance this out again. Just my two cents as a fan 😘

Except, of course, this method works with ANY texture, bought anywhere or made using whatever tools the viewer has available to them. In previous tutorials, it'd be stuff like "the textures for this planet are from NASA", or "this environment map is something I got off the internet", or "so what I did was that I went into Photoshop and painted this thing right here". This channel and these tutorials are probably worth hundreds, maybe thousands of dollars. I'm fine "only" getting the free tutorial, and having to make, find or buy the texture myself.

can't blame someone for all the work he has provided for FREE over all the years and the plethora of knowledge he has and still passes on for free. the textures are an optional step and if you don't like it find textures anywhere else online but have fun finding quality, realistic, and usable versions short of doing all the pictures of textures yourself. I mean people need to make money at some point, and its not like you can't follow the tutorial and learn how to do it for later use when you get to the point where you can see paying for textures that actually work. ( teach a person how to make a rope and all they want to do is hang the teacher )

its not that hard to make a rope texture by your self... just make a highpoly rope. bake the normals, spec, height, ambiant, and move those images in to substance designer, and start mixing some nodes :D

here the displacement map has the meeting points of the threads in black so the data displaces that as higher. I recommend inverting it with a color ramp node and pushing the white arrow to the other side and do the same with the black one and this will invert the map to make the black nit being the thread itself. That fixed that problem.

I feel like you tutorial are only there to sell your stuff not really for the purpose of teaching something. You don't do blender tutorial anymore but Poliigon tutorial, Pro lighting skies tutorial and whatever stuff that you sell. I'm a little disappointed. Fortunately I'm not a CG beginner so i know how to do stuff by my self but the beginners will think they need to buy your stuff to being go and that's false.

Yeah I'm a beginner and it's dawning on me that this guy may not be the person to follow. Sick of having to move on to another tutorial because he springs a surprise payment on you half way through the tuts.

he's quite useful when coupling with course. I'm picking up extra techniques to use while learning the "ropes" with another course on Udemy. Not the best of the best but you get what you pay for

BlenderGuru gives the rope texture away for FREE, not to mention if you're too broke to buy then you need to learn how to be creative and find way of achieving the desired outcome like going to one of the many free texture web sites that already exist if you're motivated enough to just look. I have done several of his tutorials and never spent a dime and had no problem finding the texture or HDR's for free.

I literally just watched a tutorial from Blender Brit on this last night... how are you reading my mind!!! Jokes aside, I'm excited! Thanks for the tutorial :D

You're making a left hand lay rope, which is very unusual. Look at the reference photos, they're almost all right hand (sZ) lay. Even the rope in the thumbnail is right hand lay!

Instead of adjusting the count of the array modifier, you can change it from "Fixed Count" to "Fit Curve" in the pull-down menu and it will automatically work out what the count needs to be for you.

When using adaptive subdivision, you can set the maximum subdivision amount if you want to work safely :). Just go under Render > Geometry and you'll have "Max Subdivisions" and "Subdivision rate".
