Rory was a cult figure among other guitarists, who were awestruck by the virtuosity and sheer ferocity of his playing. He was even asked by The Rolling Stones to replace Mick Taylor and Brian May has said, he got “his sound” from Rory. Rory did not sell himself and did not release singles. He just extensively toured, almost 365 days a year. He didn’t care about fortune and fame and that is what makes him the humble and beautiful person he was… RIP Rory, we love you. Check out “Bad Penny” live at Montreux 1985.

I love this guy so much, undubtedly the greatest guitarist I have ever seen live and on album he was just superb. He largely went unnoticed as he refused to play the establishment game, wasn't interested in releasing singles and when big bands came calling for his services such as the Rolling Stones and Deep Purple, he turned them down and just wanted to give his own music to his fans. A true man of the people who lived for his art and his guitar playing will never be surpassed. From the same gig as this have a look at 'Out on the Western Plain' and 'Want Ad' Blues' its a change of tempo with acoustic and resonator guitars but it showcases the simple fact that this guy is the absolute master. Try out 'Just the Smile' as well, simply sublime.

Thank you, Jamel, for understanding and expressing that Rory needs to be shown the love he deserves. Sometimes being a good human means that it's more than just views and likes. There are many more popular guitarists that get a lot of attention, who IMHO, don't come close to Rory. His masterful diversity of playing, styles, songwriting, instruments and unique vocals, truly set him apart from the rest. Bottom line is that he did not allow the record companies to dictate what he put out, would not compromise his musical vision, and he did not want to release singles. If he played the game, he would have been as well-known as the rest. But truth is, he was/is very well-known and admired among other musicians, has a very loyal worldwide fan base which continues to grow - and you are a part of that growth, Jamel. What you've seen is just the tip of the iceberg as to what he could do. Perhaps check out some of his acoustic prowess... BTW, stage invasions were not uncommon at Rory's shows - check out Belfast '84.

👍This was his opening tune when I saw him in '73. Time keeps on ticking... Going through a box of old ticket stubs not long ago. My first rock concert: May 19, 1973 East Tennessee State University (lol yeah, I'm old, but still above the dirt...) Rory Gallagher - ZZ Top 4 bucks It was about two months before Tres Hombres came out. (Dusty Hill's 24th birthday, I came to find out on his passing) It was Festival Seating and I managed to get about 15 feet from mic center. Rory Gallagher was pure fire right out of the gate, and his band was phenomenal. (particularly Lou Martin on his electric piano) Rory was amazing to see play and I think that he had as much fun as anyone. Then, BG and the boys came out. Back when they were the most badass blues rock band that ever was. Straw hats, jeans, no beards (but Frank. lol), and BG in a white tshirt w/ pack of Marlboros rolled up in the sleeve(lol). Needless to say, Rory and Billy made a big impression on a 16 yr old. Blues rock, slide guitar nut ever since. RIP Rory, Rod, Lou, & Dusty. Thank You! Keep Rockin' Billy, Frank, & Gerry

Off stage Rory was a softly spoken , humble man with Irish charm, but on stage he always gave it 110% . I saw him many times in the 70's and 80's and I can defiantly say he was one of the greatest guitarist ever ! not only electric but also acoustic and mandolin. ' Out on the western plain ' was a standard at most shows. He was the main reason I wanted to play guitar , and I will never forget though's fantastic shows. Brian May is quoted as saying that he spoke to Rory after seeing him at a show and he asked what equipment he was using . Rory was only to happy to talk to a young budding player , and told Brian he was using a Vox AC30 and a Rangemaster Treble Booster. The rest is history ! Queen could have sounded very different , if it had not been for that night. !!!!

@J Men But the fact that you pick Steve Vai as an example of a great guitarist just shows that you have different idea of the definition what makes a great guitarist. Because IMO Steve Vai just makes songs to present his talents and nothing more. You can argue that he makes great compositions but I wouldn't call them great songs (they don't even have vocals). It's more like in the same vein as classical music. I have never understood the appeal of guitarist that just make solo albums without vocals. It's more like a talent show. For me guys like Rory, Hendrix, Blackmore and SRV are truly great guitarists, because they always try to make a great song and they represent themselves as a band even when the guitarists name is on the front cover. You can always practice your whole life trying to be the most technical guitar player, but in the end what really counts is the ability to make great songs and to put together a great band. (and this is all just my opinion of course)

I saw both Fleetwood Mac and Taste in 1968. as much as I respect Peter Greene, Gallagher has the incredible showmanship and energy that may lack in Greene's playing

Love me some Rory, a good friend is singer and guitarist in a band that plays Rory covers that was my introduction. You could do worse than checking out a blues guitarist from South Africa called Dan Patlansky. Saw him live a few nights ago and may be the best guitarist I've seen in the flesh, real SRV vibes.

An absolutely brilliant guitarist, sadly taken from us much too soon. Rory was the epitome of that generation of musicians who just went out and played. Like others here, I saw him several times in the 70s. Jamal, the reason for the all/mostly male audience is I suspect that they're all frustrated air guitarists like me!
