To witness Rory you have to see a better live version of this song, like the Montreux live one.If you want to be blown away I perrsonally recommend "Do You Read Me" live at the Rock goes to College series in 1979, it's mind-blowing. Nobody can touch him 'till this day. He's on another level than everybody else. His tone, the playing and his connection with his guitar are overwhelming. And he never played the same song the same way twice! I've seen a lot of versions of his songs and every time he changes the solo, the pacing, it's just makes it a new song. Even Ritchie Blackmore said he's the most natural talented player he's ever seen. And he should know, Rainbow and Rory toured together. Truly the greatest of all time, hands down.Start listening to him, you won't feel sorry.

Nah, the live version in Belfast is the best. His adopted town, where he was and is still revered. He went there at the height of the Troubles, when the vast majority of bands wouldn't touch rhe place with a barge pole. The atmosphere was unlike any other - sheer energy from the band and the crowd. Special kudos to the great Gerry McAvoy on bass - one of our own.

I always loved Rory’s vocals. He was the distinctive backdrop to my youth. I remember when he played in Taste as a teenager. I was 15, he was probably about 19. Rory was just absolutely spectacular.

I saw Rory live about 13 or 14 times from 1976 onwards, absolutely awesome guitar player and as you say revered by many of the top guitar players, died far too soon.

Rory wasn't only our greatest guitarist here in Ireland, but I'd state that he was the greatest guitarist in the world. When you have the likes of Clapton and Hendrix saying he was the best, then you know how serious a player Rory actually was.
@dawnmoore43292 жыл бұрын
Nice reaction , but not Rory's best performance. Please delve deeper into his catalog and let more folks experience the genius of this master musician. Rory played amazing slide guitar ( Bullfrog Blues), acoustic (Pistol Slapper Blues), mandolin ( Goin to My Hometown), harmonica and sax. He was on the short list to replace Mick Taylor in the Rolling Stones, blew away most of the acts at the Isle of Wight in 1970 (including Hendrix) with 7 encores with his band Taste, and is quoted by Slash, Brian May, Alex Lifeson and others as their major influence. Clapton said Rory was the one who got him back into the Blues. Sadly, he never attained the recognition in the States he deserved but he never compromised his vision for fame. And Rory's voice is best heard singing the blues.

I do not agree to the comment in this video that singing is not his thing, by the same rule Mark Knopfler, Bob Dylan, Sting and Joe Cocker are not amazing singers, their voices are either broken or not so powerful, yet they all have something unique in their voice and style that makes them great, anyway the guy is an amazing musician

Most guitarists (even the very good ones) play like they are driving a car. Rory played like riding a motorcycle, all feel and nuance. It's very rare to hear two renditions of the same tune that are similar. He had is deamons and was a heavy drinker which contributed to his death. But as a natural player of different styles IMO he has no peer.

As has already been said, this isn't the best performance of Shadow Play to react to, not that it's bad, far from it, just that there are better ones. The setting here, a TV studio, doesn't convey the energy and rapport with the audience that Rory was known for. The Jeckyll & Hyde line COULD refer to the difference between the way he was offstage/onstage - Offstage he was a quiet, softly spoken, polite person - onstage he was electrifying! But also as he explained, Rory wrote Shadow Play in bed while suffering from a bad bout of flu , "feeling dazed from too much sleep and so on, and I think it affected me with the lyrics". Sorry you didn't like his voice, personally I find it very expressive, and well suited to his music. An accomplished multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter, Rory covered a range of styles, from acoustic country blues to hard rock, with a sprinkling of folk and jazz here and there. I believe he is! Very, very unique! Very, very energenic! His enthusiasm puts him above all others. His interactions with his fans are just great. He turned down joining Rolling Stones, they wanted him badly. Hendrix was a mediocre singer. Bob Dylan can't sing but a great song writer. Deep Purples lead vocals - Ian Gillan is famous for his 5 octave screams. Each have their own talent. You also need to look at the band as a whole. Watching his other videos, you won't be disappointed.

Agree with all you say. But you can't be "very" unique. You are either unique or you are not. The man was unique. Unqualified.

Rory loved old movies + He was really into Kim Philby as far as to write a song Philby. Being from Ireland with their dislike of the English. I personally think this song is another Philby reference. Double Agent Hiding in the shadows playing multiple roles, A little Dr Jeckel, A little Mr Hyde

There are videos of Rory where anyone who doesn't know him should be introduced. My favorite is the 1977 concert at the Hammersmith Odeon. Fabulous. Since 1965 Rory Gallagher has shown who he was and comparisons with others of his time are absolutely unnecessary and misguided.
