Belfast was quiet when he came to perform. Only Rory's performances and Barry McGuigan fighting would bring everyone together.
@RossoVerdeNero7 ай бұрын
Sorry, mate, but whoever said that was just looking for a cheap sound-bite. Rory was born in Donegal, brought up in Cork, but never stopped touring Ireland, North and South, during the dark days of The Troubles. So in one respect, whoever made that statement wasn't wrong, in the sense that music fans didn't give a crap which part of the island he came from or what Church he was dragged along to as a kid. But to say he was the ONLY man? That's just hyperbole. I'll give you two examples, although I could go on... try Stiff Little Fingers... Belfast punk band, formed in 1977, revered and promoted by the late, great John Peel, lived in a city torn apart by sectarianism, but reacted against it, as did their fans. I'll also give you a sporting legend who brought the people together: Barry McGuigan, the Clones Cyclone. (That's pronounced Cloh-ness, by the way, for those who might think his nickname made him some sort of android). World Champion Featherweight from a small town just south of the border. I was in a sporting club in the heart of what could be called Protestant East Belfast the night he won the world championship. The place was going mental. Some things transcend politics and bigotry, and the best examples are often from music or sport. So yes, Rory played his part, no doubt, but there's a long list... 👍

"Rory Gallagher is one of the best Rock/Blues guitarists the world has never heard of." A quote from maybe the Best to ever pick up a guitar himself, Jimi Hendrix on Rory Gallagher. The two met way back in 1967 in England in a small Dive Bar, when Jimi had just come over from America, to form his new Band,"The Jimi Hendrix Experience," with Mitch Mitchell and Noel Redding. Jimi and Rory had a very similar style, (raw and gritty) and I think they felt a sort of "kinship" with each other. Rory truly, wasn't in it for the fame and fortune, he loved playing small venues in an intimate setting, so he could give his fans the best experience possible. I'd put him at #2 or #3 respectfully behind Jimi, Johnny Winter. Stevie Ray Vaughn is certainly in the mix somewhere. Rory is a fantastic guitarist.

As far as I know, the story goes like this: a reporter asked Jimmy Hendrix how did it feel being the best guitar player in the world. Jimmy responded: I don't know. Ask Rory Gallagher. This made me think that probably no guitar player wants to be the best, or they accept that someone else is better. In any case, they were 2 sacred monsters with a guitar, and most definitely gone too soon. Love your reactions, always so intense and legitimate. Kinds regards and lots of love to you all. Stay safe, we need you here. 👏👏👏👏

I mean this is the story that I tell that I heard from my friend who heard it from his father who heard it somewhere. But true or not, Rory will always be the best guitarist ever in my book.
