Rory is the guitarist that other great musicians marvel over.Brian May said he learned a lot as a kid watching Rory.When Jimi Hendrix was asked by the BBC in an interview what it was like to be the greatest rock guitarist currently in the world at the time in 1970? Jimi just said he wouldn’t know and said you might want to ask Rory Gallagher that question,lol.

Rory was an incredible live performer and a fabulous musician on both electric and acoustic guitars, as well as mandolin, electric sitar, harmonica and sax. He's probably best known for his inspired blues numbers. Check out a live version of "I Wonder Who?" (Montreux 1985) for his slide guitar skills. And for some great acoustic work, "Out on the Western Plain"- just stunning. Thanks for checking out Rory on his birthday!

Only saw Rory Gallagher once in late 1987 at London's Hammersmith Odeon!. Rory, Gerry and drummer Brendon played a blistering 3 hour set tight to the wire right to the end when just about every other band you got no more than a strict 90 minutes!

Understand, this track was typically the opening song at Rory gigs. He was an extraordinary blue and rock muso perennially underestimated and underappreciated despite being an influence for everyone from Brian May to Slash.

The mighty Rory Gallagher, man of endless check shirts, you may not realise it yet Hanier Family, but your lives have just changed! ;) Somehow Rory remains largely undiscovered, a guitar players guitar player for decades, he's now routinely referred to as, "the greatest guitar player you've never heard of". Worth pointing out this is at a Jazz festival! Must have blown their minds!. Guitar players! If you never heard of Rory, he's worthy of your time to study. What he's doing looks a lot wilder than it is. He's actually a remarkably accurate player, with lots of techniques... His hamner ons and pull offs are incredible, he's very into pre bending and pinched harmonics. He didn't like trem arms so took his off along with his string trees so he could manipulate the strings behind the nut. Great slide player too, there's much to learn from Rory.. Also worth noting how his playing changes dynamically, depending if the band was a three, or four piece. Interestingly, he's responsible for much of the sound of Queen. A teenage Brian May worshipped the ground Rory walked on. One night at The Marquee club he asked Rory how he got his sound, Rory told him the secret, the strat through a Dallas Rangemaster treble booster, into a Vox AC30 amp. Brian has used that setup ever since (minus the strat). Listen to Rory, then listen to Tie Your Mother Down and it's obvious that Brian took elements of Rory's playing as well as his sound.... If you are wondering about the wear on the strat, then according to Rory's brother Donal, Rory had an extremely rare blood type, and somehow it made his sweat really acidic. If anyone wants to know more about Rory there's several documentaries on KZbin, the best of which is called, Ghost Blues. It was done by Irish tv and has the likes of The Edge, Slash etc talking about Rory. Literally everyone says the same thing.. Rory was almost painfully shy and quiet offstage, impeccably polite, well spoken and extremely self depreciating. He seems to have lived to play, never married, never had kids. There's luckily, a lot of live footage of Rory, right through from the Taste days till the end. It's all worth a watch... Shadow Play from this gig, Bullfrog Blues from the Old Grey Whistle Test are real stand outs.

In regards to Rory's techniques, for anyone interested in a deeper dive, Fil at Wings of Pegasus does a wonderful analysis of Rory playing Laundromat and his deceptively "simple" techniques. Rory made what he did seem easy, but in reality, there was nothing simple about how he played. He was just such a natural player that it looks easy, until you try to emulate his playing.

In my opinion, and I followed Rory from the 1969 Isle of Wight festival, his Live in Europe album is the best of all his albums: it's s**t hot if you like amplified slide blues, and dance it'll have you on your feet from first note to last...with nice little twist at the end! Take care! Incidentally when Hendrix attended the same festival he was asked by a journalist..."what's it like being the world's best guitarist" he replied, ' I don't know, why don't you ask Rory Gallagher'!

There is a lot of Rory recorded... the BBC did a special full concert at the BBC theatre for Rory’s 27th Birthday- it was BBC’s flagship music program - The Old Grey Whistle Test - on this I particularly like Rory’s version of the Bo Carter’s ‘All around man’. Not great for KZbin but I really like Rory’s recorded studio albums. Rory could play any Blue variant, Rock and Jazz... I was famously kind and respectful- he died of liver transplant failure cause my a toxic effect of the medication his doctor proscribed for his anxiety issues. He sold over 30 million records and played all over the world - in 1973 in the U.K. Melody Maker Magazine, he was voted number 1 guitarist, 2 & 3 spots going to Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page. That is the level he was regarded at.
