Thank you for the reaction! Rory and his band had such great chemistry. A fun fact is that Rory didn't use a setlist for his live performances and his band had to have a working repertoire of over 200 songs that he might pull out at any time-not just his own, but different blues and rock classics. They had to follow along with the first few notes he played and catch on to whatever song he decided to play. The fact that the band could keep up with this ever changing live set gives you an idea of exactly how tight they were. And Rory seldom played anything the same way twice-allowing both his mood and the crowd to determine how he played. On some songs, even the lyrics were subject to change depending on the performance. He was an amazing performer and very much missed. Want something a bit different? Try checking out Rory and Bela Fleck in Montreux 1994 performing "Walkin' Blues". An impromptu performance, these two master musicians, along with Mark Feltham on the harp, give an outstanding rendition of this tune. Its even more haunting when you realize that Rory would pass away less than a year after this.

Rory on the prowl, his slide guitar work is unsurpassed. The band were so tight they played as one even when Rory changed tempo lyrics etc. great stuff thanks for playing Rory. I’d love to hear you react to Moonchild (the studio version).

Legend has it, Rory could peel paint at a hundred paces playing slide on that Tele! One of my favourite performances of his, the band are blazing!

He'd even peeled the paint off his own Strat just by playing it! 😁

@@mightyV444 i used to think he'd maybe got a Strat with a sub standard finish, but according to his brother, Rory had a rare blood type, that somehow made his sweat particularly acidic. The back of the guitar is probably more worn than the front, you can kind of see the pattern of denim in it. Never seen another quite like it, Willie Nelson's, Trigger maybe, he's worn a second sound hole in it!....Adrian Belew used a Strat around the time he played with Bowie that had almost as much wear as Rory's, but it was done deliberately with tools and fire. ... hilariously, to me at least, that's routine for a lot of new guitars these days, lots of companies offer, "reliced" finishes on their new instruments, and if you want to pay through the nose, you can buy exact replicas of famous guitars, right down to dings in the finish, buckle rash, stickers etc, all perfectly copied to the point that sometimes the owner can't tell them apart from the real thing
@mightyV444 Жыл бұрын
@@Sandy-dd4le - Yes! Fender even make an exact replica of Rory's Strat! It's quite mind-blowing that such companies are able to do that! 🤯 I've also always loved Andy Summers' Telecaster Custom, but I think at around $20K USD for the replica, I'd also want that one to look brandnew and without any of the relic'ing done! 😅 Around '86, when I was 16 and drumming for my first proper band, one of our guitarists also had aggressive sweat, and it made all the metal parts on his guitar rust 😆 And it's also quite interesting to see how much tougher an acrylic finish on an electric guitar is compared to a nitro one = Rory's Tele vs. his Strat 😀 And yeah, I remember Adrian Belew playing that very interesting-looking Strat in 80's King Crimson, and he got some cool sounds out of that thing, too! 😊 One of Hendrix's half-burnt Strats had once gotten into Frank Zappa's hands and is now with his son Dweezil; There sure are some very interesting instruments out there! 🤩

@@mightyV444 I've never managed to find out just how exact the Fender replica is of Rory's Strat. .. as I remember none of the tuners were stock, five were from one company and the sixth was from another. Plus the lead pickup was a Dimarzio iirc, Rory also replaced some of the other hardware, would sometimes remove his string trees, and possibly replaced the neck at least once. The Fender Custom Shop get pretty detailed, but im not sure how far they go with non Fender parts. Is the Andy Summers guitar the one with his photos on it? That's a cool looking thing.
@mightyV444 Жыл бұрын
@@Sandy-dd4le - Yeah, that's Andy Summers' 'Monochrome' Strat, covered in photos he'd taken himself. Pretty cool indeed! 😃👍 I meant a different guitar, though: A 60's Tele Custom, 3-tone sunburst with binding and with a Gibson humbucker at the neck (in a white pickguard); It's not quite as exremely worn as Rory's Strat but still extensively, and he said that he had trouble to determine which one's the original, when Fender first sent him one of the copies. So I'm pretty sure the same must be true for the Rory Strat. Fender even put a DiMarzio FS-1 bridge pick-up in their The Edge signature model, which isn't an exact replica of his but a Strat made to the guy's specs, and he does have that DiMarzio in his one, too; So Fender were obviously also okay with THAT, instead of trying to convince him of using one of theirs 🙂

It was written somewhere (Rolling Stone, maybe?) that the backing musicians were just mediocre. I never understood that! Also, the bassist, Gerry McAvoy, played in the band Nine Below Zero for many years and now plays with Band of Friends.
@julief7090 Жыл бұрын
Oh, drummer was Rod D'Ath and Lou Martin on keyboards. I sometimes isolate the bass just to hear some of the incredible work that McAvoy put out. He always said Rory kept him on his toes--he often didn't know where Rory was headed in a song.

We noticed that on our last Rory Gallagher video. That look of 'Oh, here we go!' Gerry had on every second shot of him. He clearly had a blast, though.
@Sandy-dd4le Жыл бұрын
Gerry tells a great story, it might be in the Ghost Blues documentary,...every two or three gigs, Rory would come up to Gerry while they were onstage, and suggest playing a song that wasn't on the set list, it would usually be something they hadn't played for a couple of tours, Gerry would say,"I can't remember how it goes", to which, Rory would wink, grin, and say, "ah, Come on now. What's the worst that could happen?"

@@Sandy-dd4le In Gerry's book, (or in an interview) he says that they usually didn't play with a set list. The first 3 or so songs were known, and I imagine the final song, but the rest of the set was whatever Rory felt like. I can see him throwing in a tune they hadn't played in a while.

This is great 👍. To my eternal shame, I have never made the effort to get into Rory Gallagher despite other people telling me how brilliant he is. One of the two original guitarists in Whitesnake, Bernie Marsden is an enormous fan of Rory and a few years ago he did an album of RG songs. Maybe you could take a look at that album, and pick a track for Who did it better? . That would be a brilliant comparison ❤

What you will find is that Rory was quirky. I have listened to him for decades as I used to own a couple of record/CD stores and selling good blues and rock was my business. Rory was one of the greatest guitarist I have ever run across. Raised in Ireland, his first band was called Taste and I think he only made one album under that name as he performed at the rare but legendary Isle of Wight concert probably early in the 70's. That album, Taste, led the European public to believe they had another Cream on their hands, with a young Irish guitar savant that reminded people of Eric Clapton. Fact is, Rory never followed that destiny and was much more satisfied being a blues guitarist superlative who just toured around Europe. The reason so few in America never knew much about Rory is that he was afraid to fly and to my knowledge never made it to the USA. Still, Rory was known as a blued savant on is instrument and died too soon during his constant touring in Europe. Rory was always playing in my home or car and I have missed him. I am glad new people are able to hear his music in this new medium. Try and track down a copy of Taste. It was brilliant.
