Tony comes across as a great instructor. I had some great ones too. I also had one flight with an instructor who almost made me give up flying. Sadly I couldn't keep flying but I'm grateful for channels like yours which keep the spirit alive for me and bring back some great memories. Many thanks.

Yes, Tony is a legend and I’ve been lucky to fly with good people. I’m delighted you enjoy my videos. Cheers

Simple maths? It’s not necessarily simple considering you’ve got everything else going on in the cockpit and out. I find it reassuring for me through my flying lessons that not everyone is required to be ‘bang on’ with their maths. Keep these coming dude!

Thanks for watching. I’ve always struggled with maths but I’m now a commercial helicopter pilot so it can be done if you put your mind to it!

Excellent video, Rory. Your instructor is superb too, with precisely the right balance of intervention and encouragement. It also illustrates how reliant on GPS & Sky Demon many of us have become.

John Norris thanks John. Yeah Tony is superb to fly with and he explains things really will in the classroom as well as demonstrating it in the air. I agree - Sky Demon and GPS is a fantastic tool and I love having it in the cockpit, but I’m keen to retain / develop my ‘old school’ navigation skills. You never know when the battery will die or the connection will drop.

@@RoryOnAir great flying chap. Remember my hood on basic training for PPL and was convinced i was at about a 45 degree bank. Trust the dials! ✈

Cheers Joe! Tony is great fun to fly with as well as being a very knowledgeable pilot so I've been lucky to have him as my instructor for this conversion. Thanks for watching - do subscribe!

About to start navs and this was very reassuring to watch. I'd been expecting a degree or two off-track would be an instant fail and ejection from aviation forever. Nice to see visual flying is a bit more relaxed than that - or maybe I should say realistic. Great instructor too - chilled and skilled.

Great stuff Rory. I struggled with diversions myself during my PPL. I thought I had it nailed after a lesson of flying around cheshire diverting everywhere, only for it to catch me out in my skills test. It reminds me I really ought to brush up on them! Keep up the great content.

Tom F thanks for your message Tom. It is a lot to think about when you first do it and it’s always going to be a juggling act. It’s something I intent to keep practising. I’ll do my best to keep making interesting videos too!

Rory, brilliant video. I shall share on my Facebook site. Diversions are really hard to do at first. Not at all unusual to see one struggle even when the instructor has control. I used to turn the air blue when my instructor made me do them! Your instructor looks like a good egg. Good luck on the rest of the conversion. By the way, I use the Pooleys NCP020 CPM-1 for calculating ETA on diversions. Cheap, and effective. Well done on the instrument flying, not at all easy, so very good effort!

The Flying Reporter thanks Jon. I really appreciate this. It was really hard the first few times but it’s getting easier with practice. Tony has been brilliant and I’m looking forward to doing some more flying with him when I convert into one of the 4 seat aircraft. Thanks very much for sharing - I really appreciate it.

The door came open on me after my instructor demo'd a steep turn to the left I got a bol******g for not checking it properly pre-flight! But I had checked. It was a C152, as your FI said, renowned for it 😅

But unfair to blame you I’d say, they happen in all kinds of aircraft. I have a mate who completely list a door mid cruise over water with his ten year old grandson onboard. They were strapped in so just carried on and landed.

Another great video I could feel the pain when diverting. My mind locks up exactly the same. It was so cloudy last month when I did mine I never got to use the hood. Another few hours and you should be done.

Dale Edwards I think it could be partly due to the fact the camera is on super wide mode which make it’s a bit fish eye. You’ll have seen my hand looked massive on the dash earlier in the video too.
@g-de
@g-de 6 жыл бұрын
Yer I thought that might be part of it. Looked like a fun flight anyway. Presumably this is just practice for if you ever end up VFR into IMC but are you planning on going for an IR rating?
@RoryOnAir
@RoryOnAir 6 жыл бұрын
Dale Edwards yes, as part of the LAPL conversion syllabus it says you have to have logged a minimum of 3 hours, 2 of which must be stall / spin awareness and 1 hour must be instrument flying. I guess it’s there as a backup in an accidental VFR into IMC situation as you say. It was a great flight. Tony is superb.
