As a parent I cannot listen to this song without tearing up. What a talent Gord was. Canadian music will never be the same, but it is so much better having had Gord in it.

Written for his nephew who died at the age of 2 from heart failure. The following verse gets me every time ... “His tiny knotted heart , Well I guess it never worked too good. The timber tore apart , And the water gorged the wood”.

Such a masterclass of story telling. The breaking sinking ship a metaphor for the child's threatened life. And later the sadness of a sailor loosing their life at sea but at least with a life lived, in contrast to the tragedy of on lost before it barely began. A beautiful song melodically and tear-jerking when understood.

It's rare if I hear this song while alone and don't find myself in tears by the end. The final concert performance of this one....ohhhhh man...

Gord wrote this song as a gift to his sister who lost her young son to a heart defect, Fiddlers Green is a mythical place where sailors go when they pass, its a happy place where the fiddles are always playing and everyone is dancing. I think he wanted to comfort his sister and place that image in her head of her boy going to a paradise, unbelievable when you think how young Gord was when he wrote this song, a true poet was emerging, thank you for posting, from this proud Canadian 🇨🇦 we miss you Gord, rest in paradise ❤

One, two, three, four, one, two September seventeen For a girl I know it's Mother's Day Her son has gone alee And that's where he will stay Wind on the weathervane Tearing blue eyes sailor-mean As Falstaff sings a sorrowful refrain For a boy in Fiddler's Green His tiny knotted heart Well, I guess it never worked too good The timber tore apart And the water gorged the wood You can hear her whispered prayer For men at masts that always lean The same wind that moves her hair Moves a boy through Fiddler's Green Oh, nothing's changed anyway Oh, nothing's changed anyway Oh, anytime today He doesn't know a soul There's nowhere that he's really been But he won't travel long alone No, not in Fiddler's Green Balloons all filled with rain As children's eyes turn sleepy-mean And Falstaff sings a sorrowful refrain For a boy in Fiddler's Green

She didn’t know Trickle down 38 years old Cordelia Long time running Locked in the trunk of a car Fifty mission cap Fire in the hole Nautical disaster Thugs Gift shop Music at work As I wind down the pines It’s a good life if you don’t weaken The darkest one Vaccination scar These are all bangers I don’t think you’ve reviewed. Love watching these Hip reactions. Proud Canadian here, from Toronto, but live in Bobcaygeon most of the summer. Lucky enough to have seen the Hip three times. We all miss Gord very much. Keep up the good work with these reactions

Possibly my favourite TH song, probably one of my favourite all-time songs tbh. Glad to see someone outside Canada discover it - check out the album version too, so good! Great work man!

Thanks Rory For reacting to this! Rob Baker is the lead guitarist. (He now plays with a hard rock/blues rock band called The Stripper's Union ((his son now plays bass for a band called KASADOR)). Fiddle's Green comes from The Hip's third album, Road Apples in 1991 (after Up to Hear in '89 and their self titled first album in '87). I'd guess you're about half way through the really great Hip songs. Hear are a few many people really like; The Darkest One It`s A Good Life If You Don`t Weaken My Music at Work Emperor Penguin Locked In The Trunk Of A Car Plus I think you've missed Fire Works and Scared. Both of which would top many peoples lists of all time favorite.

Awesome song and reaction! Gord said he has a hard time performing this song because he wrote it for his sister's son who died early...if I'm not mistaken

I prefer the studio version vocals, but that robs you of seeing Gord's emotional performance of this beautiful Hip classic.

The HIP timeline can be roughly estimated by the amount of hair on Gord's head, and the progressive 'cut' of his wardrobe/dance moves. Once he went close-shaved bald (late 90's), he never grew his remaining 'wild locks' back again. During his final years (The Secret Path album/film), Gord mostly wore the infamous "Canadian Tuxedo' (denim jeans with denim jacket).
