This song is a true story. It was written about Gord Downie's nephew. I'm from Kingston (where the band is from). I had this song on a mix tape. A couple in the dining lounge where I worked asked me what radio station was on. I told them it was my mix tape. They were Edgar and Lorna Downie - Gord's parents. They told me the story behind the song. They became regulars there - they got me Gord's autograph and to this day, I still remember their usual order. 1/2 order of spaghetti and meatballs, 1/2 order of rigatoni. 2 glasses of white wine - lol. Salt of the Earth people.

The boy was his nephew. Fiddlers Green is where sailors in the Maritimes of Canada go when they die. His tiny knotted heart, i guess it never worked so good, the timbers tore apart, the water gorged the wood.

This was written as a tribute to Downie's young nephew Charles Gillespie, who had died of a heart ailment the previous September. Fiddler's Green is a kind of Celtic Heaven for men lost at Sea. It is said to be "...the happy land imagined by sailors where there is perpetual mirth, a fiddle that never stops playing for dancers who never tire." Due to the personal nature of the song, it remained famously unplayed live for fifteen years.
