Hello! I hope you all enjoy today's nice long look at the Rosa Gallery dot card. As I continue to get to know these paints, I'd love to hear what you think about them and if you have any favorite colors! As always with these SWM videos, this video isn't intended to be temptation. I hope it's helpful as a buying guide if you're trying to decide between colors! Also, my sincere apologies to headphones users! There is a soft thumping noise that comes up throughout the video. I tried to edit it out wherever possible. I haven't recorded an unscripted video for a long time, and I'm in a new set up. The sound wasn't audible to me at the time, but I will adjust for the next video!

Being half Ukrainian myself (my dad and his family immigrated here when he was 3) it's so cool to see some beautiful supplies from that part of the world! Especially because of the war with Russia, it's important to spread more about Ukrainian culture, which art supplies can help facilitate. 🇺🇦

I rely on my Rosa Gallery paints as my most used paints for travel, studio classes and often working at home. I don’t use earth colors much, I mix a lot, so I appreciate the excellent range of primary/secondary colors like ultramarine blue, cobalt blue (lovely delicate granulation) the yellows, purple and lightfast reds. However, the yellow ochre is as transparent as any I’ve seen, and I also like a couple of others of the earth colors. I love the paints’ layering ability, “glow” and versatility. I enjoy the freedom their full size pans give my brush, the easy rewetting, and the quality tins. The paints don’t tend towards all pigments staining like M. Graham and Qor, except for the standard staining pigments like Phthalo Blue. The paints are great when I travel; they don’t crack, and they don’t make a goopy mess like over-honeyed (IMHO) M. Graham. They have never leaked out of the tin, and yet they’re easy to rewet. The lightfastness overall is excellent, minus a couple of traditional vintage pigments. The paints have professional pigmentation levels, excellent clarity, delicate granulation, and decent but not difficult to control movement. The price is exceptional for the quality, definitely a best buy. They are headquartered in western Ukraine, so I believe they’ve had not much bomb damage from the war, and they continue to work in their own modern facility. My favorite sets are the Classic and the Floral botanical set. I use the floral set for all subjects. I also regularly paint with Winsor & Newton, Daniel Smith and Holbein, and I am a trained, experienced watercolorist. My general favorite brand, Winsor and Newton, is more transparent overall and the colors are more balanced with each other, not to mention more consistently lightfast, and D Smith has modern, intensely and almost aggressively bright colors, compared to Rosa Gallery. But they are much more expensive, and Rosa has its own very worthwhile, charming characteristics. I love my Rosa Gallery WC paints. They have a sweetly traditional English watercolor vibe. Great for landscapes.

Trying to simplify in my old age and donated all my Rosa to a local school. Now I regret it. I know their Magenta Rose made it to Kim Crick's favorite single pigment List. I loved their Violet and Neutral Black. Their plain Umber is good for muting colors to look like vintage colors.They spread just like Qor paints. I also bought mine direct from the Ukraine but I used a different vendor. Also wonderful to work with.

Love your swatching videos; they are very informative and I refer back to them when purchasing a new color. Rosa Gallery released 10 new colors recently that include another lightfast Pyrrole Red, PR254, an Azo Yellow, PY151, Cadmium Orange Medium, an "Indanthrene Grey, PB60, and some additional blues, greens, and earth colors. :) I started with pans but recently have purchased some 10ml tubes and enjoy them.

Thanks Denise🎉 I really enjoy the ROSA paints. They are quite versatile. They are a little on the heavy side but it depends on what I'm painting and what effect i want. If i want to layer endlessly I'll go with Sennelier or Rembrandt ( the glow from the paper with Rembrandt is second to none imo) if i want great salt effects or very little drying shift or one layer coverage for cards or illustration orvi want to lift woth stencils on a background Rosa is my go to. I have not gotten a muddy mix yet with them. I enjoy using different brands of paint and have several. 😉

I bought some Rosa Gallery paints strictly to support Ukraine last year. I liked them from the beginning and have since expanded my palette. The more i use them the more I like them. They are at the top of my list of favorites with M Graham, Sennelier, QOR, and several other major brands.

I bought the monopigmented 21 set on amazon when it was on sale for 20 something dollars. At first, I disliked the opacity and just how much pigment I picked up from most of them whereas the couple of browns seemed to have the opposite issue. However, I realized since then that these are actually a great watercolor/gouache hybrid and they’re great for me when I want to go for a hike and need fast saturation. The white is also pretty decent and can be mixed with the other colors to make them even more opaque.

Hullo Denise, I am so glad that you have made a study of these paints! I wanted to support Ukraine people and I was very hesitant to send money to “aid charities” So I looked for ways to boost the country’s economy and help actual people living there! I purchased a set of urban sketching watercolors in their 12 pan palette and substituted 2 more colors as the company was happy to replace the greens, since I have mixed my greens for more years than I care to think about. I picked warm grey and cobalt turquoise. I was so enchanted with the paints that I went back and purchased a selection of 24 colors and I did get a couple of the questionable reds, I just wanted the coral and carmine! I also got the 2 cad yellows as well as the ultramarine blue with Indanthrene blue for my darkest blue. I did get tubes of the warm grey as well as the cobalt turquoise! I have several different colors I went Paynes grey over indigo, I did get the SAP green knowing that it was not a true SAP green but a very nice middle green for easier mixing when I am feeling lazy! Now the quin violet was a must for me too. I suppose that is a long enough comment, I am sure most have stopped reading this extended comment, but I want to thank you again for sharing this lovely paint line with your viewers and subscribers too! I truly enjoyed watching your swatch video and I do hope that you create your own artwork from this brand of paints!

Rosa Gallery are so worth exploring. I use Aureolin green all the time when I travel and paint outside. It’s my most used Rosa Gallery color. I also bought some others, as Quin. Gold Hue, Golden Brown, Cobalt Grey, but I don’t use them as much, even though they are just beautiful. I also bought some cadmium colors for their opaqueness. Usually Cadmium colors are expensive. Here they have the same price as the other colors. I don’t like their Cobalt Turquoise. It’s a beautiful green leaning version of this pigment, but it’s really low tinting. I also don’t like their PBr25 (is it called royal brown? 🤔). It’s hue is beautiful, but layering is just impossible.

Thank you for your insight! I've been using them move this past week, and I have to agree about the Cobalt Turquoise. There seems to be too much binder in it and it's a really difficult color to use well. The others I have are a delight though!

Mix Flame Red with Ultramarine Blue, along with other Blues, and watch some serious magic happen. The separation it provides is beautiful! I use it all the time for a background against more subtle colors! ETA that PO73 has a very pretty pink-ish undertone. And I'm assuming that's where cool undertone you're seeing in the Bright Red might be coming from! Sorry to keep adding. I have most of their colors and adore them. They're very budget friendly too!

I bought a Rosa Gallery set, and I was pretty disappointed with it. The earthtones were abysmal, as well as several othere colors, such as the Chrome Green. There were tons of fugitive mixes, and tons of mixes with PBk 7, but no pure PBk 7! The pigments were all super finely ground, and they felt very weak and didn't have much presence and felt ephemeral. The only colors that were okay were the ones made of naturally potent (and economical) pigments, like the pthalos. So, yeah, not exactly up there with M. Graham, Qor, and Daniel Smith. It is a cheap paint in cost and quality.
@InLiquidColor
@InLiquidColor 26 күн бұрын
Interesting take! I agree with not loving the earth to eat or chrome green, but there are some really lovely ones in there. That's why I tend to wait until I can find things open stock, so I know I'll like the colors I get. I think for a lot of people, the fine ground quality is a positive! Some people don't like granulation and do like flow. It's great that we all have options!

Thanks for video! Those paints are my biggest regret. They look and activate beautifully but behave like transparent gouache. Layering different colours is impossible. Just a touch of wet brush activate fully dried layer. Muddy mixes on the paper is something I can't ignore.

I am looking forward to painting with them. I heard another review mentioning that, but I did not find that to be the case while swatching the second layer for the majority of colors. May I ask what paper and brush you use?
@slvva
@slvva 26 күн бұрын
@@InLiquidColor Of course the paper and brush will show the effect more or less but just try two different colours or choose one colour and make the lift test comparing with different brand. Also try to layer two different colours. I mostly use cotton paper or sketchbook 25%cotton, silver-black velvet, Rubloff kolinsky sable series and Pro Arte Connoisseur. I have RG paint in tubes since 2022. When you try them on cellulose paper you can clean the painting with the sponge and reuse the paper 😂

@@hannahthufvesson I really don't remember what colours. I noticed that during painting and my first thought was what I did wrong as I didn't expect them to behave like that. I use Sennelier, Qor, W&N, Roman Szmal and never experienced such a thing. I also paint often with gouache. If this is random thing maybe my paints are old or something? I really don't understand it.

@@slvva I'm gonna pay attention when I paint with them next! I haven't layered a lot with them, I use QoR for that - they're absolutely amazing! 🥰 I know I don't like the Rosa Gallery cobalts and cadmiums, they're either gummy or just, don't really feel nice to paint with. I agree, I study a different language with no o-dot. Nevertheless in the similar Eastern European language "o" is more like 'aw' and not 'ow'. Raw-sa is how my friends would say it- makes sense!
26 күн бұрын
Hi, I'm not an expert on Ukrainian language by any means, but I'm Czech (Czech and Ukrainian languages are pretty close). so I hope my two cents to this can still be of value. As far as I can say, the dot over "o" in Rosa is purely decorative (in the logo). Go to Rosa website and switch the language to Ukrainian. There is no dot above Rosa anywhere (interestingly, they always write Rosa in latin alphabet, while everything else in cyrilic). Also, both in Czech and Ukraininan, "Rosa" means the same thing - "Dew". And I can tell you for sure, that we pronounce "o" just as written - "o" :). There's no reason to believe it should be any different in Ukrainian, imho. So I'm pretty sure Denise pronounces it properly, in the video. Actually, very nicely, I would say 😊

Thank you for the video! I have complicated feelings towards Rosa watercolors. I found them to transfer very easily if I try to go for a darker layer and this is very disappointing. I've never seen anyone mentioning this so just wanted to add (I had these problems with Indigo and Violet). Another thing I don't like is how dull these colours actually dry, and also the extra sheen is just annoying. I didn't have this with their with Burnt Sienna though... I've purchased all the tubes separately last year. Sure, the price is amazing and it's great to support a Ukrainian company, but I wouldn't really recommend them to anyone who already has some artist grade watercolours and now just wants to "try something out", to be honest. Sure, they are cheap, but not sure if they are really worth it in this case.
