Simply the best performance of this aria. Look past the early recording short falls. LISTEN. The voice, the techniques, the pitch, the articulation. Simply outstanding.

Could not agree more. She's peerless and, yes, this is the greatest performance of this aria on record.

I just doubt that anyone can sing this better technically. I think it is really a unique voice in it's prime, so flexible and large and dramatic. I love the fact that America produced a person so great in this field usually occupied by Italians and other Europeans.

Una verdadera dramática colorstura. Inigualable, Ponselle forever!!!

Rosa Ponselle? That sounds very Italian to me. I believe she was the daughter of Italian immigrants. In 2024 immigrant is a dirty word.

I remember when I was a freshman in college and I was living with the great dramatic tenor Jon Villars. We were eating pizza one night and he played this for me. I was mesmerized...and then later found out that I had the same birthday as the great Rosa Ponselle...a lifelong love affair started.

Unsurpassed. No one can sing this music better. Callas comes very close, but Ponselle's account is unbeatable.

You mean: mezza voce. Messa di voce means: voice placement.

@@casanovaroomsbarcelona8875 Messa di voce [ˈmessa di ˈvoːtʃe] (Italian, "emission of voice") is a singing technique that requires sustaining a single pitch while gradually making the voice louder (crescendo) and then softer (diminuendo). It is considered to be a particularly advanced test of singing ability.[

I love this performance but early in her career Sutherland was better technically than this, especially in the acuti. It’s not just the recording. Ponselle’s top was suspect by her own admission. Ponselle was truly amazing but don’t just say things without doing research. She is screeching in places here and she always did. If you read about her training, She went into a practice room for 6 months then was thrust onto the stage with Caruso. She had amazing talent, voice, and musicianship but not the years of training she needed to have a secure instrument all the time. “O patria mia” was terrifying for her.

Young Sutherland was interesting, but not even close to Ponselle.
