This is not less-distorted guitar sound. There is enough of distortion, difference is in EQ settings. No shrilling, no scooped mids, but natural singing overdrive tone with rich portion of mids and slightly less treble and presence. Same story as tone of Santana ... he also using lot of compressed distortion, tons of sustain, but tone is mild and smooth, because is correctly EQd .
