When I was working as a safety officer for a soft craft services contractor, I was amazed by some of the people we hired. I was not the guy looking for violations to fire people from the job, I told my guys my job is to make sure you go home to your families the same way you came to the job. If you came to the job with 10 fingers and 9 toes, by God it was my job to make sure you kept those toes you still had left and all of your fingers. I really did care about keeping my guys safe, heck I would climb and check on my scaffolding guys. I would see if they had everything they needed to get the job done safely.

I'm curious what kind of education/training you need to be a safety manager. Ever since elementary school, going over safety stuff was always my favorite subject. Mainly because it was an easy break from the regular crap, but now that I'm grown, I really think I could do well making safety my career! I always try to be prepared for anything, and I hate it when other people just aren't being safe.

@catguy5425 ,I have a B.S. in Toxicology, which ranged from environmental issues, toxins, and even industrial hygiene. I started out as a pre-pharmacy student, but pharmacy school is just as competitive as med school. I swapped over to Toxicology but the degree isn't necessary. "A degree proves that you can learn, not what you learned," has been quoted to me. I interned with an engineering firm that did Environmental engineering/remediation but also worked construction and at Home Depot during high school/college. A degree/an apprenticeship is necessary for a person to be a CSP, or CIH.
